whoever operates this observation deck has 3 floors of it but indoor, they better come up with a good name for it probably King of NYC Deck or NY SkyDeck or King of NY/NYC Observatory.

Why not? It seems pretty true. I mean, look it at it, it's almost topped, probably in December and January and from there the glass and antennae need to be put in. Complete means the whole structure is done, not including all the offices, bathrooms, decor, etc

I think that's pretty optimistic. This thing still has over 260 ft to go and at the rate of one floor per week, (or ~13 ft) we're looking at 20 more weeks minimum, so I bet its going to be April at the earliest.

It's probably best to go with the old name. The Top of The World Observation Deck. Now all we need is a Windows on The World Restaurant in one of the other buildings.

All I see is a giant grid. I have Quicktime so I don't know what's going on. The functions work (zooming, toggling) but instead of the images from WTC1, all I can see is a giant grid. Any suggestions? I'd love to see this!

I think you click on the grid and like drag the screen where the grid is and it shows up. move it in all directions to get a full 360 degree view. Hope, this helps.

I know. The progress on the top has been very slow lately.

Nov 28, 2011, 2:11 AM
It's not the ironworkers fault about the slowdown up top...their still owed 8wks in assessments and there's no steel waiting to be brought over from jersey for them to erect, there are financial issues and steel that needs to be paid for. They are preparing to remove the shipping containers in preparation of more steel. When those are removed, my husband's not looking forward to the sway of the building...he says there are times the building feels as though it may 'snap' when a strong wind comes through, the shipping containers in the center are providing some stability for them...it's scary up there. There's talk of a possible sit-down strike coming up.

Why aren't they getting paid? Who runs the site down there because someone needs to have a talk with them?

I think it's because at this angle you're seeing 4 at its widest and 1 as it's narrowest. Look at it on google maps overhead, they aren't positioned at the same angle.

Maybe so, but I had a walk around there yesterday. 4WTC is looking definitely wider and more imposing than 1WTC at the moment. 1 WTC is quite elegant for a building that tall, while 4WTC (my personal fave) is getting that real monolithic look.

Hard to say why really. It all starts from the top actually. If The P.A. hasn't paid Tishman then they,in turn can't pay their subs......DCM,in this case. There is also a chance that DCM has been paid, yet is sitting on the money owed to their workers so they can make a little money on it as well. Ive seen that done before too. Either way you slice it,it's wrong because the little man is getting stiffed out of his negotiated benefits. I know some of you might disagree but ive been a union tradesman (pipefitter) for many years and you don't ever stiff the little guy out of his money. Ive seen the difference between the union sector and the non-union sector and by far,the union people are far better trained.Ive seen non-union people (yes, many of them illegals) who couldn't read a tape measure. The unions mandate that their people receive training in safety, and for things related to the trade to keep their skills updated along with the required refreshers and updates. Apprentices are taught by professionals who have many years experience in the trade. If an apprentice doesn't know his trade at the end of the program then he doesn't earn that coveted journeymans book and wont until he has satisfactorily passed every course and/or exam, either oral, written or practical. I highly recommend applying for a an apprenticeship in the trades. If college isn't in your plans, then there is an alternative if you are a motivated young person who is interested in learning a skill that noone can take from you while at the same time make a good living wage with benefits. Am i union and proud of it? Damn straight i am.

It is indeed a circular pool, it will also serve as a skylight for the Observation Deck Lobby just below the plaza. SOM also added four smaller triangled pools at each corner of the base, but since the new podium design got rid of the chamfered corners, they also got removed.
On the east entrance, there will be a 18-foot circle planter, just in case you get confused with renderings.

Amazing vantage point! Where is this? Looking down Fulton? Hopefully this will look equally amazing when 2WTC is built.

I know its been repeated often, but thank you Carlos for your picture updates. It provides some nice continuity to the thread. Unfortunately this thread's been derailed a bit. Let's get it back on track.

Why should mechanical floors take longer? They're much much narrower than office floors and emptier

There taller then the other floors and most likely more complex being that they have to support the equipment. I wish Zensteeldude was here to show us his blue prints and explain it in depth.

Ok, i have no clue as to why everyone felt that they had to go on a trolling montage
for the last 2 pages but please do not post in this thread unless your post is relevant to 1 WTC. If you feel the need to talk to another user about whatever random topic then please utilize the message system. Do not make the moderators lives harder by making us have to clean up your post. Next time we'll just be giving infractions. Thanks, happy fourming.

However, am I correct in saying that each mechanical floor will count as two or three floors? I felt like I heard that from somewhere. Or am I making things up?

And I second the comments on the trolling. If your arguments were interesting in the least I wouldn't have cared but seriously it sounded like a bunch a 6 year old girls in a playground. Sort your lives out.

A mechancial floor is just this huge floor with a huge floor to ceiling height. Nothing else.

But new twins would have reminded people of that horrific day. I think the new complex is modern and matches with its surroundings better. To be honest, i think lower Manhattan will look like a masterpiece of a utopia when the complex is complete. Just so many buildings at the perfect height. There is so much symbolism involved in these buildings as well, so much work put into them. The mass of freedom tower is not as large as the twins but the mass is spread throughout the other three buildings. These buildings are complex and iconic. In the future, I think they will be more recognized. I personally love how tower 1 reflects light on its edges, more than the original twins did. This country is moving forward from tragedy in my opinion.

New Twin Towers or not, people will always be reminded of that day especially if you are a New Yorker like myself. These new Towers are getting built to show we can get knocked down and get right back up even if it takes us decades to get back all that office space we lost on 9/11. Tower One is a great addition to the skyline. However, to the Port Authority Tower One is strictly business, they couldn't care about the symbolism part because that is why the WTC was attacked to begin with.

Well, in the wait for the next steel, the workers should be very much caught up on a lot including core construction, cladding, and on other various items that needed to be transfered to the highest completed floor (including as those porta-potties as shown in Carlos' latest picture) among other things should hopefully mean that the next jump won't have anything else holding it back.

I'm thinking he meant "can't they just work harder/throw more people at it in order to get the construction of the new WTC done because it's quite important."

...or something like that.

We are talking about the last month of progress. 1 WTC has not moved any higher in almost a month.

Progress from here on in will be a bit slower,as now they also have to lift mechanical and associated equipment up to those floors and they need to pour those floors before they can do that. Not only do they have to pour the floors, they also need to pour the houskeeping pads that chillers, pumps and related electrical components sit on as well. Then i'm sure the fitters, plumbers and electricians also need to get pipe, conduit and all their gang boxes up there too,as do the carpenters. All this is much easier to do when theres nothing but open sky above you. Once the big stuff is in,then they can go up with another floor and the smaller stuff can be bought up by buck hoist or drifted in through the side of the building.
