There is no reasonable excuse not to place it there, other than the owners of the buildings do not want their future tenants turned off by the constant reminder of the horror that happened nearby. That is the REAL reason the memorial has been so sanitized of the actual events. The owners literally buried the memory (Museum underground) to avoid the visual reminders.

Let's not get too wrapped up in the memorial here, there's an entire thread for that. The sphere is relevant here as far as its potential placement on the Freedom Tower plaza.

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this question but,
After looking at the Security plan and noticing all the streets are blocked off with check points & barriers......What was the point of rebuilding all the thru streets?, I thought the point of it was to get rid of the "Super Block" feel the original WTC complex had. I can understand limiting vehicle traffic near the buildings but I had expected to see the streets used as a free & open walkways. They might as well have just built another Super Block and limited acess to the complex to 3 or 4 points of entry......"Freedom Tower" uh OK?.:koko:

Okay to answer a few questions...

1) The Sphere is an enormous sculpture. For the people that have never seen it you will have to go to Battery Park to check it out. One World Trade Center's lobby can never hold such a large sculpture and the nearby Performing Arts Center makes it harder. The only place it can be put on is either the Memorial or Liberty Park. I rather see it on the Memorial at the site Traynor mentioned since it's an open area and it is large enough to support it.

2) The World Trade Center was attacked in 1993 and 2001. I am certain with a 99.9% chance that it will be attacked again. So if you have any other solution that won't require heavy security I am all ears, but I don't think so. So the security will have to be there.

Now everyone needs to shut up and get back on topic and stop repeating the same questions over and over.

Well, yeah, if you had a shitton of debris - we're talking well into millions of tons here - falling right on you, of course you're gonna look like a f'ing eyesore! Do you tell severe burn victims they look like eyesores?? I think it ROCKS that The Sphere survived the 9/11 attacks AND all that debris. I'd LOVE to see it in the memorial plaza, alongside the Survivors' Tree. :)

If you look at the layout of the memorial plaza as I posted on the previous page, you will see that according to the original design plan, there will be no trees in the spot just West of where it originally was. It was only going to be a clearing with a few strips of the grass anyway.

YES!! You know what that "eyesore" says to me?

"SHIT! I took quite a beating... BUT I DIDN"T GO ANYWHERE DAMN YOU!!! I"M STILL HERE!! HAHA!!!"

You're damn right it belongs right where it once stood or close to it...

Ok, not to add something so that this post is back on topic... I saw some additional recent pics of this building, and I am caring less and less about the antenna/spire. It's going to be an awesome building when it's completed...

I agree there will have to be stringent security at the site at times given what happened in the past..So people will just have to deal with it. As far as an actual future attack on the WTC again, I don't think it too likely. The Police, FBI, and powers that be will be all over the site. Another plane attack won't happen. The only threat I see is maybe another car bomb attempt sometime, but I don't think that will succeed either because of past experience. 1wtc will be the safest building in the world.

They must have redesigned the doghouse. It has more levels in an aerial posted in the last few days on either the SSC forum or hear. Any way, assuming the height is unchanged the north crane will be moved to the corner and the northern half of the doghouse will be re-configured to stick out less from the center line. Some time after that the communications ring will be installed, at least on the North and East sides and another "level" or two will be added to the doghouse and then the platform constructed on top. The south crane will be re positioned according to alan88 and both will be given double fall blocks for the heavy lifting. I've gotten my info from diagrams and forum members on the site, the information has been very reliable, and various pictures of the doghouse support the theory that I have given, I'll change it as new info becomes available.

Video: "Freedom Tower" Construction Workers Having Fun High Above Manhattan

http://gothamist.com/attachments/nyc_arts_john/091112woody.jpg
BREAK IT DOWN WOODY

One World Trade Center is still called the "Freedom Tower" in some circles, and that includes the hard hats responsible for raising it up into the NYC skyline. And judging by a couple of videos that recently surfaced on YouTube, these guys know how to have a good time while doing it. In this first video, entitled simply, "NYC Freedom Tower Fun at Work," a hard hat named Woody "breaks it down" for coworker's cell phone camera. Be sure to watch all the way to the end for a vertiginous peek down the side of the skyscraper.

xedDscOi8Gc

In this second video, the ironworker behind the cell phone introduces his coworkers and delivers a boisterous narration as workers put a panel in place. Hey, somebody has to do the grunt work of documenting this job for future generations! Breakdancing Woody has a cameo, and we also meet the "Stud Fallon (sp?) straight from Jamaica, THE RUDE BOY, the Womb Stretcher!" It's like the guy just got his first cell phone camera and can't bear to put it down. And we're all the richer for it:

h0GjrA6f2CA

"That's IT, that's how that gets done," he explains once the window panel is in place. "See how easy it is when you got one hand on a camera?" Your move Sinatra-singing sandhog. (http://gothamist.com/2011/08/02/video_second_ave_subway_constructio.php)

What I "personally believe" has nothing to do with it. There is an origination that determines the height of buildings and if antenna count and 1WTC has an antenna, not a spire. It will be ruled as such upon completion.

1WTC has a spire, not an antenna. 1 WTC is taller, offically, though you're obviously entitled to your opinion.

Your personal belief is just that, your personal belief.

1WTC has a spire, not an antenna.

That's really not true at all. It's a mast, or it will be a mast. That there is any kind of confusion is just further proof that the continued distinction between mast and spire is conflicted, contrived and ridiculous. 1WTC will be the tallest in the country, because its mast reaches higher than the pinnacle of any other building proposed or built thus far.

Techincally, it's an antenna. The planned spire was to have a radome enclosure that enclosed the antenna, making it a spire, the radome enclosure has been dropped and all that is left is an antenna.

Yeah, that is what I said... 432 Park will be the 2nd tallest in the USA and the tallest in New York.

What I "personally believe" has nothing to do with it. There is an origination that determines the height of buildings and if antenna count and 1WTC has an antenna, not a spire. It will be ruled as such upon completion.

Anyway, the height is nice, and maybe the materials and detailing will blow us away. I am not holding my breath, but maybe...

"What I "personally believe" has nothing to do with it."

Apparently you think it does. The structure on top of One World Trade Center has not been ruled an antenna, and you don't know that it will. It might be, but there's also a very strong possibility it will be ruled a spire. Now honestly, I agree, I don't particularly think the mast should count, but bottom line, CTBUH makes the final decision. Not you, not me, not anyone on these forums.

You're confusing the height of a building with the height of a self-supporting structure, but that's a conversation for a different thread. I have no problem with this building being taller than One World Trade Center. The only thing I have a problem with is its boring design.

1WTC has a spire, not an antenna. 1 WTC is taller, offically, though you're obviously entitled to your opinion.

Your personal belief is just that, your personal belief.

You don't pay attention do you? The architecture elements that made the spiretenna an antenna have been removed from the design. It will now nothing more than a communications antenna. This is not debatable. It is no more a spire than the antennas on top of Sears.

I hear the base cladding is going to begin around this time next month.
Any confirmation?

[QUOTE=Guiltyspark;5832694]

If CTBUH's makes an exception for 1WTC simply because it is the WTC then they will lose credibility. I would be money it is ruled an antenna, because the mental gymnastics you have to go to call the current design a spire are insane. I think you greatly overestimate the chances of it being ruled as on.

Anyway, soon 432 will be the tallest in New York, and hopefully we get something more interesting soon after it. Although I will of course reserve my judgement till we start to see cladding.

how is it disrespectful? If they wanted 1wtc to be taller and be the tallest in the city for a while, they would have made it taller, yes im sure if it were designed today it would be much taller, but it is what it is :D

I doubt it...I think they had some obsession with making it 1776 ft. to the pinnacle (and the same roof height as the original towers).

In all honesty, they could have gone with one supertall and another megatall. But this is the wrong thread for all that I guess (just had some loose change in my pocket:rolleyes:)

Hi people , I would like to debate about one important detail of the tower: the antenna / spire.

A few months ago, the Durst organisation decided to cancel the project of a covered spire , and changed it into a simple iron mast.
The main reason was to save 20 million dollars..

:(
:(

Don't you think it's kind of shameful that Mr Durst wants to cancel one of the most beautiful parts of the tower, in order to save 20 little millions, when you know that Freedom tower has already costed 3,5 BILLIONS and it's expected to be 4 BILLION in total , at the end of 2013 ??

When you have already put 4 billion dollars on the table, i.e 4000 millions, you understand that 20 millions are a detail. Moreover, if mr Durst wanted to really save his 20 millions, he could have cancelled another less-important part of the tower, like the new base, for example..

So, what do you think about that ?

Dense_Electric
Sep 16, 2012, 10:35 AM
Ugh, haven't we talked about that enough? There are literally dozens of pages of us insulting Durst. Everyone agrees that he's a colossal asshole, but it's happening, so we'd might as well learn to live with it. Maybe a radome will be added at some point in the future, but there's really no point in discussing it right now.

Restaurant is still on 102.

IrishInNYC

Let me rephrase it, 102 is called out on the architectural drawings as...
http://wirednewyork.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=16275&d=1347653282
And has done since they flipped it up from 101 and the observation deck went down a floor.
As for if the restaurant is leased out and ready to rock...of course not...but the floor is designed for it. This is in the wrong thread.

IrishInNYC

(6) Service elevators open on 102 from what I can see. Anymore Q's guys move it over the T1 thread!

If my memory is good, there are around 20.000 workers in the Sears Tower (Sears, not Willis ;) ), for comparaison

"We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special."-Stephen Hawking

Sorry for the tread jack, but I've read this stupid thing hundreds of times coming to this thread. Hawking is wrong, although his name is certainly appropriate. We might think we understand the universe, but we don't. Our comprehension is limited by our brains which are no doubt inferior to other brains/entities out there. Humans truly understanding the universe is as likely as a poodle understanding calculus.

OTOH, I like this tower much more than the twin towers which only look good through the lens of nostalgia.

I tend to think that posting videos about One WTC is relative to this thread so Into the Lens is doing a good thing. He's probably not making money off it, but if he is who gives a shit honestly. Anyway I'm glad this Tower has reached the top of the steel and now onto the antenna. I look forward to visiting the Observation Deck when it opens. Haven't been up that high in that area since August 1998 when I last visited the South Tower. Whether it's an antenna or a spire who cares. It will still soar to 1,792'. So what if the officials count it or not it will still be structurally taller than every building in America. Height is height, whether you add the spire/antenna or not.

I have to disagree somewhat. Antenna height is different than building height. Otherwise, the 600m broadcasting towers would be Americas tallest "buildings".

That's the money shot. It's my favorite angle of this building, and I think all of the four buildings' designs are maximized from this angle. I can't wait until the site is complete.

Yeah but you said it yourself they are just "broadcasting towers." They aren't buildings. An antenna is apart of a building's height. Regardless the height still exists. That's why the CTBUH doesn't count antenna height because it isn't an architectural element like a spire. I'll still see One WTC as the tallest building in America.

:previous: Agreed. Although they may not be architecturally attached to their buildings, many antennas are visually a part of them. The Sears,ESB, and the former WTC were examples of this. However, 1 WTC doesn't seem to actually be made with just a skinny antenna like it has right now. That spire was the continuation of the bulk of the tower and it's sad the PA and Durst don't give a crap about it.

Carlos posted this in the memorial thread, it clearly shows the progress of the base behind the netting. The cladding will be here before we know it.

Carlos- This picture is stunning! Beekman looks like a waterfall of mercury, can't wait until the facade is finished on 1 WTC, the light coming off that triangle will be breathtaking in the morning

:previous: I agree, this forum is a place to contribute new material about One World trade Center and discuss the tower. If the cost of contributing new material is redirecting us to youtube, so be it. First off, he contribute videos that give us a view of the tower in every day life. :previous: Awesome. It's going to be busy up there. If the tower can be built to hold on to that much equipment, surely a spire shouldn't be a problem.

NICE graphic of the Antenna going up. I love how you have made a graphic like that to show people what it would look like when the antenna is going up with the cranes! :-) That is awsome! I can't wait to do videos of the antenna going up now! I will be in the city in DEC or before to check out the progress of it going up!
