it's a kangaroo crane. each time the height of the core increases they 'jump' the crane up a level. it will follow the tower as it rises, and when it's finished, they'll take it down

More than a job, World Trade Center is a point of pride
Double shifts, seven days a week for Collavino crew in New York

http://dcnonl.com/images/archivesid/32992/410.jpg
50,000 cubic yards of concrete was slated to be poured just to get the Freedom Tower job up to street level.

IAN HARVEY
March 12, 2009

Renzo Collavino is far from home, deep in a 16-acre hole at what was and what will be one of New York’s most famous landmarks.

Work at the World Trade Center Freedom Tower is progressing slowly; too slowly, in fact, dragged back by a series of issues around how to best preserve existing structures and the subterranean rail lines below the massive hole excavated after the towers were downed in the infamous 911 attacks.

“The project is several months behind schedule,” says Collavino, who with brother Paolo and father Mario, make up Collavino Construction Group, the Windsor-based outfit which is the main sub-contractor on the US$300 million-plus concrete job.

Add in the credit crisis and the sudden evaporation of money needed to keep construction projects like the WTC rolling and it’s been a rough few months. Renzo and his key managers live in New York and commute home to Ontario every two weeks.

Despite the chaos and the pressure of the ever-ticking clock, his voice is calm and contained. These are delays outside of his realm of control.

His focus remains on the below grade portions of the works with special attention on the elevator shafts and ensuring there’s no thermal cracking.

“We’re on double shifts seven days a week now so we are doing our part to be back on schedule by summer,” he says.

The US$3 billion Freedom Tower will have an illuminated spire and top out at 1,776 feet — an auspicious number marking the birth of the American republic.

It will feature an observation deck at 1,300 feet with a square glass parapet paying homage to the original Twin Towers.

The tower rises from a cubic foundation and tapers into triangles while forming an octagon at its centre. Over the 105 floors will be 2.6 million square feet of space which are slated to open in 2013.

The concreting operations are still below grade, with about 50,000 cubic yards total pour slated to get the job to street level.

Then, the structural steel will commence followed by pouring of concrete on metal decks, concrete elevator core walls and auxiliary works such as walkways, slabs, stairs, pads and curbs.

It sounds easy enough but the logistics are a nightmare. The lower Manhattan site is smack dab in the middle of an old historic area with narrow streets and limited access.

Materials can only move by schedule, early in the morning or at night and nothing can sit on the street waiting for a delivery window for more than 30 minutes.

Still, getting a workforce hasn’t been an issue as it might be on other jobs.

“Everyone wants to work on this, to make a contribution,” he says. “There’s a lot of pride surrounding the construction of this tower.”

Indeed, for many of the trades, their fathers, uncles and cousins worked on the original structures and creating a new structure has become a mission and a statement.

The job is also a challenge, technically.

“We’re dealing with 16,000 psi concrete on the elevator shafts where there’s a 160F temperature requirement and the maximum allowable variation from the inner and outer walls is 30F,” he says.

“So we’re using ice during the initial curing process in both summer and winter to control the temperature.”

The elevator shaft walls vary from two to six feet and have considerable amount of reinforcing steel, he says.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” he says.

The design has been predicated on the events that transpired on Sept 11, 2001, to ensure that the building will never suffer the same tragic fate as its predecessor, the Twin Towers.

The original World Trade Center tower collapsed quickly when the heat from burning jet fuel weakened the steel structural components, leading to failure and a domino effect which brought the floors crashing down on each other. This time, designers and engineers are trying to ensure it will never happen again.

All the rebar is also bent and laid by hand, he says, since local union rules prevent use of pre-bent rebar delivered to site.

The project is presently approaching grade with the expected completion to mid to late summer.

“In the next coming months we will be focusing our attention on organizing and planning the above grade works which will include a 4 foot thick, 70 ft high blast wall around the perimeter of the base of the tower. Collavino states.

“Though this project has its daily challenges, we continue to move forward towards the completion of the tower, a symbol of freedom and a testament that America still stand strong.”

I'm sure this has been asked 1,000 times or more, but are their any predictions as to when the south core will undergo another concrete pour? It's been over a week if I remember since the north core underwent it's last pour so it will be a little while until that undergoes another pour if I'm not mistaken...

First you want to take your photos and then upload them to a place such as Flickr or another image hosting website. On your actual message to post on ssp hit the "insert image" button above the type box. Then, once done that happens you can simply drag and drop the picture you have on flickr and it should appear in the message.

When Are They Going to Build the New World Trade Center? Just Look Up

By David W. Dunlap

David W. Dunlap/The New York Times Ironworkers on 1 World Trade Center, now more than 100 feet above street level.
The steel framework for the south core of 1 World Trade Center has reached more than 100 feet above Vesey Street. The north pool of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center is taking visible shape. And by the end of the month, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey expects to have placed an order for 22,000 tons of steel to build the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.
It seems safe now to say that the new World Trade Center is under way.

That doesn’t mean that it is anywhere close to completion. But the battleground has shifted largely from offices and conference rooms to the 16-acre site itself and the task of engineering and assembling an interlocking three-dimensional puzzle that begins 70 feet below street level and is to culminate at a point higher than any other in New York City.

The memorial plaza is to open on Sept. 11, 2011, followed by the underground memorial museum and Tower 4 in 2012; 1 World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, in 2013; and the transportation hub in 2014. Less clear, as the economic storm gains force, are the fates of Tower 2, Tower 3 and Tower 5. And it never hurts to add the caveat that a lot surefire plans at ground zero have been foiled by circumstance.
Taking that into account, The Times plans to follow construction (or delays) over the next few years in a series of video reports, beginning with this one. These reports will focus on the big milestones, on the fascinating details that must be resolved, and on the many men and women who are building the new trade center. If you have a few years to spare, stay tuned.

A look at the core of the Freedom Tower, which is the concrete section in the middle that is home to the guts of the building, including elevators. The outer steel beams stake out the perimeter of the tower.

Thanks for the updates and photos, NYguy.

You're welcome sir. That's the way it goes with these towers. We spend a year wondering when things will finally start rising, and then boom! Just look at Gehry's tower on Beekman as it bursts into the sky. Didn't seem like that one would ever get going. The Freedom Tower is scheduled to really take off this summer.

I walked around Governor's Island most every night for 8 months back in the 80s. The Towers were always my favorite buildings. I never missed a chance to stand on that observation deck.
My ship was anchored off the WFC the next day supplying light, water, electricity and whatever we had available in stores.
It means much, seeing this place grow again, and your efforts in keeping us updated are greatly appreciated, NYguy.

Yeah, that's from 7 WTC. I took a similar photo from up there a couple of years ago, but back then, both the Freedom and Goldman towers were in the earliest stages...

^ People working in 7 WTC and the Freedom Tower will get those closeups.

This photo shows how people in the WFC will get a firsthand look at construction of the Freedom Tower and the memorial. It's almost unreal watching those things take shape.

No increase in the N. core level that I can see. If it advances at the same rate as the S. core did from the current level, the next jump won't be until April 23.

^ Well here's another chapter.

MARCH 20, 2009

While I was taking photos of the Freedom Tower, a couple of women asked me why. I explained that it was the WTC rebuilding, and it confirmed their suspicions that it was ground zero. That brings to mind a couple of things, one being that even with all of the signs, renderings, and a couple of damaged buildings, some people still don't know what it is. And secondly, due to media coverage, many people are still expecting to see a hole in the ground - they aren't expecting to see the vast amount of construction the site has become. Anyway...

Hey everyone I'm new on here and I just wanna briefly introduce myself. Obviously I'm canadate and that's my last name if anyone is wondering. I'm from NJ and I've been a "spectator" at this site for the past few years and i finally decided to join....but to get back on topic (b/c I know how some people get pissed off on here when others stray away from topics) I'd like to say that those are some great photos NYguy. You and everyone else on here always do a good job with the updates and I appreciate it.. maybe if I hadn't known about this site I'd be like those women. haha...It's really sad how ignorant people can be...but what can you do?

Though I'm not sure if that's the actual sidewalk in front of the tower or part of the street itself, according to the PA, it's the Fulton Street connection. We all knew it was coming, but it's nice to actually see things taking shape.
