Is the orange structure the roof that will be filled entirely with concrete? Or is the green area under it the roof?

No. The orange part is the roof.

Part of the visual plan was to look like the Washington Monument,so if such height increase were to happen it would make the visual appeal redundant.

Hahaha,made my day.

Well, I've said this before, but you could put a cap on the top- just like the Washington Monument. That would bring height up to ~1500 ft and you could have a Ping-An type observation deck.

And that would pretty much ruin the building. Height isn't everything, seriously.

Under the Port Authority's supervision, tower steel has topped out at the 105th floor with the installation of glass curtain wall above the 82nd floor and concrete floors poured above the 93rd floor. The elevator shaft fit-outs and spray-on fireproofing are both underway as are the utility installation and tie-ins. The "cocoon" safety system is now in place around the upper perimeter and will continue to rise with the building. The installation of the 408-foot-tall telecommunications spire is expected by end of summer 2012.

How is the cocoon going to "continue to rise with the building" if the building is topped out?

The square holes just to east of the memorial north pool are both tree pits and pick holes as Skanska and DCM build out platform A / track 1 of the new PATH station. The roof had to be installed first to create the 25 ft walkway around the north pool by 9/11/11. It is called top down construction, so everything now comes in by pick hole or flat car to PATH station.

the top of the #1 subway box to the left is the future restored Greenwich St. Once the new PATH station opens the temporary PATH station up north will be removed opening up the street from north to south.

One World Trade Center’s Skinny Spire Redesign Might Not Measure Up

http://archrecord.construction.com/news/2012/08/images/1WTC-Spire/2.jpeg

August 15, 2012

New renderings of One World Trade Center released last week give a more detailed look at a slimmed-down design for the Lower Manhattan Skyscraper’s 408-foot spire. Not only could the design change keep the tower from reaching a symbolic height, it might also compromise its bid to be the tallest building in the United States.

Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM) and structural consultant Schlaich Bergermann und Partner’s original design for the spire enclosed it in a tapering shield of white fiberglass plates. But last year, in a move that saves $20 million in construction costs, the development team of the Durst Organization and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey decided to take off the cladding, resulting in the narrow metallic mast visible in the recent renderings. If that spire is just a bolted-on antenna, rather than an architectural element, it would not count toward the building’s official height, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, the organization recognized as the official score-keeper for towers across the globe.

One World Trade would then clock in at just 1,368 feet, earning it second-tallest status behind Chicago’s 1,451-foot Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower). In fact, antennas on Willis Tower are not counted toward the building’s height for the very same reason, says Kevin Brass, the council’s spokesman.

...for their part, the developers dispute the characterization of the spire as an antenna, saying that it will be illuminated at night, and that it will not be used as a transmitter, though as in the original design, broadcast equipment will hang from it. Plus, the design change will make caring for the spire less treacherous; workers won’t have to scale it to replace fiberglass panels, says Jordan Barowitz, a Durst spokesman: “That’s the stuff of ‘Mission Impossible,’ not skyscraper maintenance.” Brass says the council plans to meet with Durst and review the new plans and will reserve final judgment until the project is complete. He also acknowledges that some amount of tweaking was expected before the 104-story tower was finished in 2014. “We are a still a long way from a completed project,” he said. “Designs change during projects all the time.”

Why Is the World Trade Center Lit Up Red? It’s Some Kind of Salute to the Troops

http://nyoobserver.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/1wtc_red.jpg

By Matt Chaban
8/15/12

We first noticed it two weeks ago, crossing the Pulaski Bridge between Long Island City and Greenpoint. There it was, monolithic on the skyline as it has been for months now. But there was something different about 1 World Trade Center. Poking up from beneath the skyline of the warehouses in the foreground and the office buildings beyond was a band of red lights. It was hard to tell from there, but maybe there were some blue ones, and it was a U.S.A theme, all be it out of order (white-red-blue) in honor of the Olympics.

Then, there it was again this Friday, almost entirely red, plainly visible up and down Sixth Avenue (above), and no doubt the rest of the city. People have started noticing, and pictures have been making the rounds on Twitter, especially this one at right, shot by Inga Sarda-Sorensen. So we asked the Port Authority—what gives?

It took a day to hear back, but all we found is “It’s for the troops.” The meaning of the color, and the occasion, remain unknown. It does not appear to be any holiday or milestone. Perhaps just an inspired construction crew? Like the team that turned the tower into a giant Christmas tree the past two years. Apparently they are very amped (rightfully so) about veterans, not least because there are many working on the site.

The last time the building was lit up like this was in February, again in red, in honor of the anointing of Cardinal Timothy Dolan. Once it is clear exactly what the meaning of this impromptu memorial is, we will be sure to update the story with the details.

^^ at least theirs a chance of maybe a redesigned spire :D

Spire is a travesty. So thin it is hardly visible. Tower should have had a tapered roof with a proper spire on top like the ping An tower on Shenzhen. Shows a cheapskate approach and a lack of creativity. Ruining the previous mediocre spire with a cheap uncovered antenna and claiming it as a true spire worthy of 1776 feet Iis even more shameful. No, I have not gotten used to this mutilation of the previous so so spire. If the design was unworkable, the engineers have a lot to answer for in the initial design stages. A building redesign would have been the logical solution, but they left it too late and someone wasn't doing their job.

I can answer that....That is one of the Holland Tunnel's Ventilation Towers, there are 4 of these towers serving the 2 tubes of the tunnel which opened in 1927.
this one is located on a pier off of Canal Street.

Wow, thats a lot more than I expected. TY

Lol when I was little I always thought that building was a jail.

Speaking of childish misunderstandings.... when I was a kid I thought they called it Battery Park because of the building that looks like a battery.

There's always the possibility that something could change, but it better happen real soon if its to happen at all. The problem though, is that neither Durst nor the PA are all that concerned with the "spire" designation. They have repeatedly said that they are building it, regardless. This is a different time from when Pataki was governor, and there would have been outrage. This tower has repeatedly been in the news for excessive costs and delays. I doubt Cuomo would have the appetite to forcefeed more expense on its construction.

This image, for me, encapsulates (one of) the fundamental aesthetic/symbolic inadequacies of the new tower: seen from a distance, it looks like Tower One of the old World Trade Center. The faceted triangles, etc., whatever one thinks of them, are mostly lost. And so what it really looks like is that they rebuilt one of the Twin Towers but forgot to rebuild the other. Thus the skyline is only half restored.

This could change if they build Foster's nearby tower with the diamond roofs, and in that case we would have, as someone here nicely pointed out, fraternal twins if not identical twins. But as I understand it, Foster's tower may never be built.

I agree! The photo does give me that nice feeling of nostalgia for the twins (especially since you can't see the faceted triangles). I really do not like that aspect of the new 1WTC (I miss our boxes), but I know many people do.

For me, this building is part of a new skyline and stands alone (or rather, with the rest of the buildings in the new complex, if 2 and 3 even get built). Although it is reminiscent of the old North Tower, I don't get the same impression that it's missing a twin. Perhaps if only the South Tower had collapsed on 9/11 and the North remained standing, I think that building would definitely have looked odd by itself because it was meant as a twin set. But I think the skyline is being restored to a new normal, with these new buildings.

You guys will be the first to see my newest renders. I don't know how the crane will be tied in to the spire/antenna [if even] but I made one up for visual representation of the basic idea. I made the yellow [South] crane as tall as the crane on the setback of T4, so I know it is possible for the crane to reach that height. I'm just too tired to add a more detailed description without rambling.

I have to say, when I first saw this design years ago, I thought that the view of the tower at an angle (i.e. when the tapering effect is most apparent) would look strange or awkward. However, now that the tower is nearly complete, I find that I like that view the best. The tower really soars from that angle and looks extraordinarily tall.

Definitely the best angle, it just looks weird and awkward when it tapers I think... The more it mimicks the old North Tower the better

He said the better view is where it tapers, and I have to agree on that too.I also thought that view would look bad and weird, but now that it's almost finish I have to say it's a very awesome angle.

I've mentioned before that from a distance the tower looks almost freakishly like one of the original towers still standing. But when you get it at that angle,
it looks even taller because of it's tapering form. I would have loved to see it with the complete spire.

Basically the square frame for the cladding. The glass will be installed later.

It is a blast resistant frame for the glass. This is being installed by American Architectural and is different that the cladding being done by permetilisa. 7 WTC has a cable net wall at it's entrance . Here is an article link about 7 WTC cable net wall http://www.siny.org/media/projects/7wtc.pdf
