It's hard to tell from Otie's diagram, but those extra heavy core to perimeter beams look like they kind of serve the purpose of a modified hat truss. I knew they'd need something like that to transfer mast wind and quake lateral mast loads to the perimeter through the guys, although the core takes the gravity load. Probably need it for all the machinery up there too.

Doesn't seem like it. That's the one thing American cities like New York lack, brightly lit buildings. Seems that would really add to the skyline.
The only city I've seen with a nicely lit skyline is Charlotte, and it really made it look more impressive than it otherwise would have been.

I take it you've never seen the New York skyline then, but that's another issue.
This tower, though it's not complete, is already pretty bright, as is tower 4. But once complete it will be a spectacle of light.

New York City is well lit up; The buildings of NYC are well-dispersed; the concentration of buildings, tall buildings especially, is enough to keep the city well-lit especially when viewed even from the International Space Station.
Another thing; NYC is really aiming to become one of the greenest cities out there. :notacrook:

Yeah I know new York has some lit buildings, but they only seem to be on the spires fore the most part. I would love to see more buildings lit like the financial tower in shanghai, or the BofA building in charlotte. That would to turn a great skyline into a brilliant one.
I was hoping the new wtc buildings would incorporate something like that. That would male them looking amazing at night.
One can only dream though...

The only reason they are completely lit so brightly right now is because of the construction lights. When everything is said and done they will look like most NYC skyscrapers.
Well, maybe not like most NYC towers. I think #4 is going to have some backlights at the top like Tower 7, and I hope Tower 1 decides to light up the blank mechanical floors.

I 100% agree with that! One fun thing to do is wander around the Financial District and walk NW towards the WTC. When you get to be a couple or so blocks away from Church St, WHAM! You hit all this open space after being in the concrete jungle that is the Financial District. Then you see these two super-tall buildings looming over you in the sky. :) It's a far different feeling (to me, anyway) than approaching the Empire State Building in midtown. Don't get me wrong, the ESB is pretty and all! I love coming up to the WTC... Very pretty and shiny. Same deal when you get off the E train at the end of the line and come up to street level on Church. What a view! :)

I think this tower has a modern Asian corporate feel to it, perhaps HK or China. I think it doesn't feel very NY at all. The whole complex is sterile and corporate that looks like something you'd find on the outskirts of Tianjin, Shenzhen or Doha. In fact, it just looks like anywhere 21st century world, to be honest. Globalized architecture, and you could be anywhere, from Shanghai to Santiago Chile. I like it enough, but it doesn't have enough personality to make it a special building from a design standpoint.
One thing I do like is that it brings light to NY through the use of vibrant glass curtain walls, which a city that is constructed mainly of stone, concrete and brick building facades really benefits from.

True--and to me, it is much better than the old one, as is the entire complex.
Very well said!!!

I never really liked the old WTC except that it was grandiose in scale, other than that it was decent but did look pretty nice at night. The new WTC site will be a 16 acre site with a long stretch of mirror-like facades made out of very quality glass/iron.No other site(maybe the 3 building stretch in Shanghai with SWFC,ST,and JM) will be able to compete with it in the world because of its complexity, infrastructure, history, and importance.

^ Nice perspective there Carlos. ;)
As 1 and 4WTC near completion, the wounded NY skyline is finally getting back. Now we just need the other two towers to get off the ground.

I must say that I agree. I like the modern design 1 WTC has and I think it fills in the gap in LM nicely.
I agree with you! I must admit that, even with the current design, when i saw it unveiled in 2006, I didn't much care for it. Over the years it has grown on me, and now I like it a slight bit more than the original towers. It's like a modern WTC. I always wonder how modern 1WTC would have looked with a twin though. Anyway, the modern 1WTC looks awesome by itself. The original 1WTC would have looked very strange on its own.

:previous: Same here. The twins looked pretty good at night, but were hideous in the day, especially with those grey shades where the sky lobbies were... looked big and cheap more than anything. The new complex fits in perfectly with the WFC, as if the buildings were meant to be there. Would have liked taller twins or a taller top floor on 1 WTC but the design is attractive and it heals the scar that Lower Manhattan saw for too long. :)

I'm just happy lower manhattan finally filled in the gap, and plus were getting even more huge towers, so nothing to really complain about, just that it might take a while. But unless you're 100 years old you're likely to see it get built.
