Hey Dino and yankee fan! good to see quite a few jumping ship! lol

NYguy, Great photo that . . . . will look grand when all towers are complete.

Not seen any night shots from you before Carlos, they look really nice especially now the interior lights are reaching your vantage point above 7wtc, Bet you have a good view of mid town on a night time too.

I magnified one of your pictures above to take a closer look. Is that the first row of cladding peeking out from your point of view?

I'm jumping ship as well :notacrook:

The 1 WTC thread over at that other site has gotten very lame since that moderator de-railed it over stupid font colors, and banned several of us (myself included for 5 days). I'm loving the flow of updated pictures over here though, I think I'll be sticking around!

Is it possible to stop discussing SkyScraperCity and stick to the topic of this thread? It's lovely that you all decided to have your little boycott but after five pages, it's getting a little old. Not every shot of the WTC has to be accompanied by a comment about SSC. Yeesh.

Now, does anybody know when the glass will reach the highest completed floor? It should be a lot easier to visualize the finished product when the glass catches up.

I think that should happen around the time the roof tops out, if they stay on the 1 floor per week pace. I might be off by a few floors though, math isn't my strong point.

No, that is not glass, that is actually space.....the glass panels start 6 floors down.....I had to go to the garden level just to make sure.

Awwww Poo! I am getting so eager for the day when you can see some cladding. Thanks Carlos for going the extra mile... Ummm... extra floors.... to get me the answer.

P.S. To all the people that complain about one thing or another... Too many posts about this... Too much talk about that... Just give me pretty pictures... and so on... My question to you is: Is your scroll button broken? Or perhaps it takes extreme physical effort to read a couple of words of a post and realize its contents don't interest you and to scroll down to the next.

A little tolerance and patience makes for a better experience for all. Because now I had to scroll passed a bunch of complaint posts, just to get to the one that mattered. Are you not just exacerbating the problem?

Just a thought.

^ Floors 100 & 101 are destinated for the Observation Deck. No public information released about the future of 102nd fl.

* Original plans called for a Restaurant at floors 100 & 101 and an enclosed Observation Deck at 102nd, later the PA flipped them, being 100 and 101 for the O.D.

I know, right? It's crazy because last time I checked, the "Windows of the World" restaurant was the highest grossing restaurant in the United States. That's a big money loss for them then.

wasn't the reason it was scrapped because they said it couldn't turn a profit and no one would come forward to open one because of that?

I was under the impression it was the highest grossing in the world, but the space was originally designed to house a restaurant so eventually one will go there right?

When they first announced the cancellation of the restaurant most people said the same thing... "But it was the highest grossing restaurant..."

What that fails to account for is the actual cost of running that restaurant. It may have "grossed" a Billion dollars a day but if it costs nine hundred and ninety nine Million dollars a day to run in costs... then the "net" profit isn't anything to brag about. That's why they only ever bragged about their gross and not their net.

The potential proprietors of the restaurant claimed the increased cost of food, higher delivery costs, and the exorbitant insurance costs (of a business in a terrorist target) all made the financial risk prohibitive.

Money was never an issue for the WTC. They had double money coming in than they did out. It will always be like that. And I am 99.9999% sure that there will never be another plane/terrorist attack in any buildings like 9/11 again. It's very unlikely that will happen again..

You can never be 100% certain the terrorists will never strike again. Look at what happened in Norway a few days ago. Also there will be an empty floor at where the restaurant was supposed to be at on One World Trade Center. They might (not 100% certain) built a restaurant up there in the future, but not now.

I can give you the height which is 978 feet, or slightly higher, but that is where it is at. About the same height as 4 WTC will be when it's complete.

Well I think that's the reason why they've added more escape routes throughout the building, and why the base is a huge concrete bunker. I think that risk is pretty well understood.

Just weeks after Conde Nast, one of the world's top media companies, agreed to become the anchor tenant at 1 World Trade Center by renting a million square feet comes word of another critically important development in the rebirth of Lower Manhattan.
Westfield Group, the Australian-based builder and operator of major shopping malls worldwide, has forged a deal with the Port Authority to bring high-end shops and restaurants to the rebuilt area around Ground Zero.
As part of that effort, Westfield will contribute $612.5 million toward constructing 365,000 square feet of retail space, in return for a 50 percent stake in the development.
Given Westfield's proven track record, that sounds a like a good deal all around.
Indeed, it will mean a significant upgrade in the quality of the area's retail businesses that existed before the tragic events of 9/11 a decade ago.
The agreement still must be ratified by the PA board. But kudos to all, particularly Executive Director Chris Ward, who is making impressive strides toward creating a new reality at the World

Otie
Aug 1, 2011, 5:00 PM
^ The top of parapet is 1373' measuring from Vesey Street entrance, which is 5' below the main lobby height. Eastern, western and southern entrances of the tower stand at the same elevation, if you measure from any of these entries then you'll have 1368' to the top of parapet.

Somebody's out to lunch, but I don't know if it's the construction workers.

Anywhoooo, I read in either this thread or its twin at SSC that the WTC Complex isn't Class A office space and can't compete with the office buildings in Midtown. This was said as if it's an accepted fact. Can anyone explain this to me? Surely, a skyscraper of this quality is Class A, and far better than those in Midtown built throughout the 20th century.

It seems 'contracts' and 'unions' will never been in the same sentence with positive news. Companies should really take the time to deal with contracts before they expire. Otherwise you're just asking for workers to do something about it. Hopefully they don't allow it to cause a huge delay. :sly:

Concrete workers walk off World Trade Center job

By Daniel Massey
August 1, 2011

i don't like this...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/01/concrete-workers-strike-_n_915365.html

Concrete Workers Strike At World Trade Center

Hundreds of concrete workers walked off the job at the World Trade Center site Monday one month after their contract expired.

While the strike affects 1 WTC (formerly Freedom Tower) the Port Authority insists the work stoppage will not affect the 9/11 Memorial, which is slated to be finished by the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

"It's a horrible situation, you know? We built this city and they want to take money away from us, in this bad economy," John Hardt of the Cement and Concrete Workers Union told NY1.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the strike may affect more than just the tower.

Without concrete workers, work cannot proceed on part of the World Trade Center's transit hub, according to a person familiar with the matter. Other construction tradesmen continued work at the site on Monday, but a prolonged work stoppage could affect their work if they need concrete to proceed, according to that same person.

i don't know what they want, i mean they get paid $40/hour. those union workers need to do their job!

Man, this tower doesn't seem as tall as it actually is because of the surrounding towers. But it's cool to see the square sides of the taper get smaller and smaller.

I still can't believe how large it looks at it's current height. By large, I mean how wide it looks. It still looks massive at floors 74-76. I guess it will look smaller by the time it gets into the 90's, but now it's still so massive. It's also amazing the glass is almost up to the height of 7wtc.
