So many lights on.

Yeah, they didn't turn it off the lights. They have save the electricity. Don't try to spent too much money on lights bill.

earthcam's live stream of the midtown skyline is currently facing south, it has a pretty good view of the trade center.

I wonder why there's a white light on top of the beacon. It usually lights up in red.

There is a white strobe during the day and a red warning light at night.

Does the spire or even the tower itself have the same LED lighting that the ESB has? Will be get elaborate light shows every once in a while?

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but seriously what would it take for them to clad the stupidly thin antenna? I understand it's millions of dollars. Could it possibly be funded by donations? Imagine if everyone in the tri-state area could give just a few dollars, it would be more than fully financed...

I repeat the sentiments of so many others already, it will be a huge shame if/when the antenna is not considered a spire and not counted in the height. But I think what's most important is that the anorexic spire is barely distinguishable from a certain distance and does not feel like an important part of the tower. To prove this put your thumb over the spire in any picture and think about if it really makes a huge difference not being there.

I also wish a single "tribute in light" beam could be lit up every night on top of the tower right where the antenna is as an "extended spire" that could be a beacon for miles, but I'm sure that would be too expensive to upkeep.

This Is A Video That I Shot For My New Youtube Channel.
"ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER FROM CAPTREE STATE PARK LONG ISLAND NY. September 23, 2013."
I shot this video from around the area where I live here on Long Island NY. One World Trade Center Is Just 40 MILES AWAY From Where I Shot This Video!
(I am sorry for the delay, but it was very hard to find the Tower in my view finder cause of this Long Distance Shot that I took. You can see how just far away I was when I zoomed out)! I shot this video near the Captree Boat Basin on Captree Island). Since it was a perfect SUPER CLEAR DAY here in NY, I figured I would try my very best to get in my first Long Distance Shot of the Tower! I hope to go into the city to do a update video in a few weeks from now! :-)

Yeah the other building's in Lower Manhattan are quite tall in there own right but with the distance of 40 miles or so you are not going to see 700 to 900 footers that well or at all.

I'm actually glad in a way that 2 and 3 WTC have been stalled until after 1 WTC was structurally completed. The original twins were so awe inspiring because they stood hundreds of feet above everything else. Pretty much anywhere with a clear view within 50 miles of NY, you could see them on a clear day. They were a common background.

The new 1 WTC restores that prominence, albeit with only a single larger tower. I love how it has a similar rectangle profile from far away. Yes, it'll be nice once it has a pair up in the sky (2 WTC will reach to the roof height of 1 WTC with it's spire) but it'll have a very different profile.

I like to think of what we have now as a very symbolic transition state. We lost two, have put one back, that harks back to the two lost, and soon we'll ascend a completely new and unique tower completing the rebirth of the center.

I think that's a great way of looking at it. And the day that 1 WTC officially opens is gonna be something very special and emotional.

While I think overall that the spire looks good lit up, am I the only one who think that the top of the spire looks a little awkward when lit? Every part is lit except the part above the beacon. This almost makes the lighting look incomplete IMO. Anyway they could light up that part, or is this basically it? It's not bad, but it's not blowing me away. Anyone else concur, or am I just a blind kook?

Otherwise, I would upload the few shots I got from Top of the Rock while the spire lighting was still being tested. So, if you can all wait till Sunday evening when I get home, there are some damn sexy shots on the way.....

In my opinion, the antenna (call it spire if you want) of 1WTC is by far too high, it's 1/4 of the total height, that's too much.

1/6 is fine, 1/5 is a bit too much... 1/4 is ugly.

When I watch the photos of that tower at night, one word comes to my mind: "Cheating".

Cheating, because a little red light floats above a 120meter iron stick. And they pretend to have built a 541 meter high tower.

No no, let's be realistic. The antenna should be 50 meter maximum. Because now that's too ridiculous.
It's almost as ugly as the antenna on the ESB...

They should have done something like Taipei 101, with some kind of full structure upon the parapet (417m), with a few more smaller floors.

Taipei 101 is gorgeous, and doesn't shock the eye at all

What time do they light up the antenna?

NYguy
Sep 30, 2013, 12:55 AM
They are really going to have to light the rings as well to make it look decent. Just lighting it the way it is only "highlights" the lack of connection between the antenna and the tower.

Also, keep in mind that the rotating beacon will be the attention grabber.

Eh, doesn't seem that realistic. You have to keep in mind the "glass curtain" windows on 1 and 4 WTC are much wider than those of the older buildings around it, so they will both look more brightly lit because more light will be seeping through. I would imagine strips of light running around certain floors rather than individual dots, more like this, but minus the brightly lit base and mechanical floors: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QQ71WExBW9M/UCKTVNVWyrI/AAAAAAAAHKs/oLdfrYE1tE4/s1600/One_World_Trade_Center_1WTC_Freedom_Tower_New_York_modern_architecture_world_of_architecture_worldofarchi_04.jpg

I though the base would be lit, just not very bright?

Sep 30, 2013, 2:01 AM
The night time light situation in 1WTC and 4WTC will be completely different when walls are built and employees fill in the floors. I don't see why they need lights on mechanical floors, that would just be a waste of energy and this is a LEED Gold building.

Agreed that you'll have a lot more light and in bands than shown there.

On a somewhat related note, why does Goldman feel the need to leave every light in their entire building on 24/7?

Haha, as an ancillary benefit of their insane amount of influence on Federal policy, the government probably picks up the tab. Kidding of course. Maybe they're using their new building as a beacon to lure some of their employees who never found their way out of Jersey City.

Either way, the building fits in so, so well with the WTC complex.

Hey, I never forget it. It'll always be one of those "what if" moments when people look back on how and why things are built the way they are. But those photos
give a closer shot at the structure of the rings and how that all plays out. Anyway, there will be an exhibit opening up next week at the skyscraper museum
of the new supertall boom in NY, so I'll get a chance to see that model in person if it's still there. I haven't been since the other WTC exhibit a few years ago.

One World Trade Center awaits FCC’s repacking decisions for new broadcast tenants
As work is being completed on the top of the new One World Trade Center, broadcasters are faced with the decision of whether or not to return to their previous transmitter location.

Michael Grotticelli
Oct. 7, 2013

Twelve years after the destruction of the World Trade Center—home to many broadcast antennas for New York City television and radio stations—much has changed. Most transmitters and antennas eventually relocated to the Empire State Building (where CBS was previously located) and 4 Times Square.

Now, as work is being completed on the top of the new One World Trade Center, broadcasters are faced with the decision of whether or not to return to the location. Antennas can go up to a height of 1,700 feet on the new building and the facility will be ready for broadcasters who want to move there in 2015.

However, so far, none have made the commitment. Presumably everyone is waiting on the FCC’s decision to repack broadcast spectrum after next year’s spectrum auction before making a decision. The cost of relocating versus the amount of viewers that reply on over-the-air broadcast might also be a factor.

One World Trade Center is owned by the New York Port Authority while the broadcast facility that includes the antenna spire at the top (which was completed just last week) is managed by the Durst Organization. Durst also owns and manages the 4 Times Square broadcast site and can tie both of the facilities together in a very comprehensive lease package for broadcasters.

...“That goes back to the repacking of the television band—that’s what the hold-up is–to make a commitment to finalize the antennas and everything that goes along with getting broadcasters up there on the TV side. The FCC has an auction of some of the spectrum. It is tentatively scheduled for June, 2014. They want to clear 10 channels in the band nationwide to be able to offer it to broadband to sell. So, they are repacking some of the channels.

Lyons said there will be an upper UHF and a lower UHF spectrum with a separation of the band in the middle. “But in some markets, some of those UHF stations may move to the VHF channels,” Lyons said. “Until the auction actually takes place middle of next year, or a year out from right now, we don’t know exactly which channels these stations are going to a) be voluntarily move to or b) be forced to move to, to know what antennas I need to actually put up there.”

New York City is expected to have several high-band VHF stations. A major remaining question involves the breakdown of UHF versus VHF allocations. The FCC will issue an NPRM late this year, which gives an outline of the allocation table. At that point, it will open up for a lot broader discussion and the broadcasters will have a pretty good idea of where they’ll end up.

Does anyone know if the upper mechanical floors on 1 and 4 WTC (which are obviously not lit in this night photo) are going to be getting any sort of night lighting?

I imagine it would look something like this if it did. But the Port Authority would be your best source of information.

Nice photos NYGuy,, WTC #2 is beautiful/awesome in those renders,, it'll be an absolute shame if that doesn't get built.

NyGuy if anybody knows you would,, is 3 going to be the original height as planned in the beginning? If not what was the old stats vs. the new if/when it resumes skyward?

That's a question for the tower 3 thread, but the original height for the tower was 1,155 ft minus the 4 spires. Now it's at 1,080 ft minus the spires. I would assume it's being built to the current height, but that has always been the most flexible of Silverstein's towers, at one point rivaling the Freedom Tower in size and height. Unless he says otherwise, expect it to be what it is.

That tower #1 is now nearly perfect. Only thing it needs now is to have the construction elevator dismantled. Any particular schedule or approximate date for that?

As much as I want the other WTC towers to finish, the "Manhattan tour por SVENLW" pic is amazing. I love the way it perfectly forms the staircase effect from both sites. Like a pyramid with a giant spire. Epic :)

I would guess after they finish "Constructing" the tower.. there is still lots of interior work left to be done.

Vesey St. Pedestrian Bridge Permanent Closure

http://www.lowermanhattan.info/images/news/100713_VeseyBridge_160.jpg

On Monday, October 7th, the Vesey Street Pedestrian Bridge permanently closed to the public for the start of its removal. The Port Authority, in conjunction with the New York State Department of Transportation, already is removing the eastern approach to the bridge. The steel framing, stairs, landings, elevator, and escalator will be deconstructed first, followed by removal of the actual bridge span over West Street and western approach. The Port Authority did not provide a timeline for the work, however the agency will assign Traffic Enforcement Agents daily to help assist with the newly restored street-level pedestrian across West Street.

This fall, the new "west concourse" of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub is planned to open under West Street -- linking from the WTC to the World Financial Center in Battery Park City. The additional concourse will help accommodate pedestrian flow with the Vesey Bridge no longer available.

Does anyone know when we can expect to see the communication rings start to fill up?

The communication ring is like any other floor in the building. It will be leased by tenants for their specific broadcast needs. When those tenants lease space, and build out their space, that is when you will see broadcast dishes and such begin to occupy the ring. I would guess that will not be until the building opens next year-ish. Remember the dishes on the roof need to link to equipment in the building on the broadcasting floors in order to function. Those floors won't be ready to be occupied for some time.

Also, there is no guarantee that the equipment that will be mounted to the rings will look anything like what we see in the building renderings. So, prepare yourself for something that may look quite different from what you have come to expect.
