Definitely good news. There should be an animated image of the column rise.

This means that the rebar for the N. core is almost or complete, and they're expecting a concrete pour, and then the steel cage will be extended. They didn't mention anything about those trusses encased in the glass base. They're seen from almost every render.

I've always wanted to know this, what's the difference in the color of the rebar? The one they're using for the plaza is green while the core/column casing rebar is black(at tower 4 it's all one color).

For a tourist - a night at the Millennium Hilton. It's just like the webcam and then some. Failing that, probably the Winter Garden or the pedestrian walkways over West Street.

Green rebar is epoxy coated, it's used in areas where the concrete may often be wet, thus exposing the rebar to moisture which could cause it to rust. The core of the tower doesn't need epoxy coated rebar because it won't get wet once the building is completed.

In a west facing room in the Millenium Hotel. Otherwise, your only real option is to purchase stilts. The fences are very high.

Go to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for the best food in the city. I cannot reccommend Zero Otto Nove enough. But that's a bit I a hike, so try Dim-Sum (dim-Sung?) in Chinatown.

If you go by weight, the ones they started erecting today are the largest. I'm sure there well be longer sections in the future but they well weigh less per foot.

WOW, we got back from vacation just in time !

PS: There are alot of mills in the world that can roll beams upto 110 feet or more.

It looks like the first one is up and they are awaiting another one . I bet they can put up 2 or 3 a day.

On the other hand, getting a 60 foot long column section through the streets of lower Manhattan in the middle of the day may not be pratical. Of course they may have brought several over early this morning and they just can't be seen from the web cams.

70-ton column is largest installed at WTC tower

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/media/ALeqM5hOhcmDi9YT-P5UxXiO1FdZ1xFuHg?size=l

NEW YORK — Builders of the tallest office tower under construction at ground zero have set a 70-ton piece of steel into place — the largest column installed yet at the building.

Three more columns are set to go up Thursday, and 24 by the fall at One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower. The 1,776-foot-tall skyscraper is the largest of five planned to replace the trade center after the 9/11 attacks.

Each steel column — made at a factory in Luxembourg — is about 60 feet long. The columns at the bottom of the tower's foundation are about 35 feet long.

The new columns will bring the building's steel skeleton several stories above street level. The building is set to be finished in 2013.

Construction workers install the first of 24 large steel columns at the core of One World Trade Center August 12, 2009 in New York City. The perimeter columns, which are approximately 60-foot long and 70 tons, will allow the initial floors of the tower to be constructed and are the largest to be used to date on the tower.

Those "connections" between the columns and the core look like access ramps.

As Puzzlecraft and theWatusi said, that is the floor beam (a W44x 262, 44 inches high, 262 pounds per foot) with an OSHA mandated access walkway on top of it. Such devices are required when steel being erected is more than "3 floors" above the slab or deck below it. Once more columns are erected and more floor beams added the walkways well be removed.

PS: those 2 beams well eventually support the 3rd floor and the outside edge of the 2nd floor via hangers.

PPS: Thanks for all the pics and video NYguy !

PPPS: There is a four letter word for why only two columns went up in two days, it's R A I N. OSHA would have a stroke if they erected steel in the rain. (By stroke I mean fine the hell out of DCM)

That's a W44x230 on the right a 262 is a little thicker.

You confuse columns with floor beams. No rolled beams are larger than a W 44, and no one would pay to have fabricated plate beams supporting every floor of there tower.

Go see a therapist about your issues with Tower One.

The pour is done, the pumping rig is gone, now Vesey street is clear for another column delivery, maybe today?

Is it just me or does this building look smaller than it should? I see this pictures when compared to the other buildings and wonder, is that just the elevator?

The core area gets smaller as the floors increase.

Wow 54 elevators, thats insane! And I am so happy, I can actually now outline the building since that crooked beam went in!

So you mean the core is small, but the building is exactully wider. I guess from what you are saying, they are working on the core first and the outer part later. Makes sense, if that is what you mean.

This was supposed to be a monument to New York's strength and determination, but instead it's turned into a monument to New York's government gridlock.

I agree!

Looking at my notes, the time from the first South core jump to the fourth and last South core "concrete" core jump was 5 months plus 6 days. The interval time for the North core from first to fourth jump was 5 month minus 6 days or 12 days faster.

For the south core, it took 3 months and 10 days from the last core jump until they started erecting "core steel". If for the north core, the steel onset takes as long, we won't see north core steel until October 28th! Yeah, that seems like forever doesn't it? Maybe it will be faster.... because the south core "wait for the steel" was in the winter while now it is still summer.

It won't take that long. As soon as the concrete cures I bet they'll be putting that shit up.

They have to if they want to erect all of the jumbo columns this year.

If you look closely at the erecting steel (core steel) you can see a splice in the columns about 4 feet below the first beam. That is where the core steel was suposta begin.
In other words, there was suposta be another jump of the south core before core steel was erected. I guess things were not happening fast enough so they added 20 feet of columns and put it up ahead of when it was planed.

How can this type of buildings take till 2018. I read somewhere that this building will not be finished till 2018. Is that, right? Does that even make any sense?

First few pics of the diagonal column from me, and some other 1 WTC related pics. I went a few days ago, but then it started to rain. The WFC makes a great cover from rain from Vesey to Liberty.:haha:

They put three columns up, so that leaves 21 more...they're doing ona a day...that leaves 21 more days, with hopefully little or no rain.

So nice to see this project moving along. I imagine it is going to start moving SERIOUSLY fast now, especially when compared to how long it took steel to appear above-grade. Imagine what this project will look like by the end of the year, even 9/11!

Can't help but notice they keep leaving the PAC in the renderings, though it looks likely that it now will be moved to the tower 5 site.

‘Freedom Stone’ to be Rededicated in Hauppauge at 9/11 Memorial Unveiling

By Dana Filipowski

Sept. 11, 2001 is a day no one will soon forget. With less than a month before the eighth anniversary, Hauppauge-based Innovative Stone announced that it will commemorate the tragic losses by rededicating the Freedom Stone, a memorial that was intended for the Freedom Tower, has since been given back to the company.

Former New York Gov. George Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had unveiled the stone during a ceremony at Ground Zero on July 4, 2004, where it was going to be the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower at 1 World Trade Center, which is currently under construction. Once the site plans changed, the memorial piece—a 20-ton solid granite monument that was mined from the Adirondack Mountains—was given back.

The stone, which has flecks of garnet—the official gemstone of New York—within it, has been sitting in the backyard of the company’s headquarters ever since. But stone will soon be relocated to its new home at a new memorial garden in Hauppauge.

“This is a way that people can reflect quietly”, says Cathy Mazzo, marketing manager for the company. “It brings them back to the feeling of community.”

“It’s important for Americans to remember what happened,” said Glen Klein, a retired New York City Police Department officer and the current director of police affairs for the Feal Good Foundation, which are one of the big sponsors of this project. “They are not listening to it anymore on the radio or seeing it on the news. This is a way to help people remember.”

A public rededication for the stone will be held on Sept. 11, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at 130 Motor Parkway. For details regarding the Freedom Stone ceremony or to become a sponsor, please visit www.innovativestone.com or call 631-297-0411.

A much shorter section of steel or something that looks a lot like steel arrived this morning. Big Red currently has it.
