Just a detail question: what is the difference of height between the "rooftop" and the parapet (its height is 417 meters) ?

It seems that the height of the rooftop is around 405 or 410 meters, but I'm not sure about that. The parapet seems to be around 10 meter-high.

Well the rooftop is the flat surface that you can physically stand on atop the building, which is the 105th floor 1,334' 8" or 1,340' 4" from Vesey Street. The parapet is a wall that extends above the roof 1,368' 0" or 1,373' 8". What sucks is that the roof or 105th floor doesn't exceed the original North Tower. The parapet is what reaches the North Tower's height. I just wish the communication ring was included because it exceeds 1,400'.

I like it! With the spire so tall and frail-looking, yet with the awesome lighting capabilities... It only makes sense to raise its profile as something truly presentable. In yo' face, Banksy. (Not really lol... But still. We're making the best with what we've got. And it can be improved! 1 WTC can be an even more amazing, stylish, iconic building, even though it's mostly done. It's the creative flourishes.)

The parapet extends below what would be considered the actual roof height if it didn't exist.

Please look at this picture:

http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b481/preylsalmas2/creux2_zps220625ba.png

How will they deal deal with the empty spaces in the angles?

I guess they cannot leave it empty. Will they pour it with concrete?

Guiltyspark

Why can't they just leave it empty? It's already built and filling it with concrete seems impractical, expensive and pointless.

Also, as far as the park above the security station, we have been aware of that for awhile. I have not seen those particular renderings before though.

A lot of buildings have empty space like that. Almost every shopping mall I know of does, among other things. Ornamental facades sometimes hide old facades or revisions.

Nothing. It won't be hollow. Those corners have been fitted with non structural steel for the glass to come in. The corners won't be visible once the glass is completely put in..........

I think he's talking about the inside of the base; what they will do with the empty space in there... And they won't do anything, you can't even tell once your inside

Why would it even need to be filled? It's already got the steel supports for the glass facade, it's not like anyone's going to see what's behind them.

Storage closets with really really high ceilings? It does seem like a waste. Especially when you consider how much more engineering and cost went into building the angled corners, just to cover them up with a thin steel frame and some glass.

That is what I was thinking too. I guess it costed millions to design those corners. Now that they decided to make a cubic base, they cannot just leave it behing a thin sheet of glass.

Why not? The area at the interior base of the triangle that the new corners form isn't super large and it's not very useful. Putting a corner newspaper stand in each of the corners is probably something that could be done, but that's just silly. Maybe the space could be used to house a little police outpost... which is even sillier. Besides, you'd have to cut through 'da bunker wall to access the space for the interior and that would end up compromising the blast mitigation design that went into the base.

It's deadspace that probably cost $10 million in a $4 billion tower: that's nothing.

There is one upside to the corners not being filled in. They could always remove the supports and go back to the chamfered base in a future renovation.

But most likely, the owner when Silverstein's contract runs out will be just as careless...

I thought the main reason for the chamfered corners is that they're more supportive than straight beams, much like a truss. Either way, they don't take up a significant amount of useable space, and the lobby doesn't have to be any larger than it already is in order to serve its purpose. I think people would be surprised at how many buildings are like this.

No, there is way more than 84 floors... The height needs to be changed, however. Pinnacle should be 1,776ft and height to roof should be 1,368ft. I don't know why you put the height as measured from lowest entrance whenever that's not the official measurement.

And they say there is 104 because the mechanical floors. They usually count as 2 floors as those floors are typically taller.

Then how do you explain floor 20 being the one above floor 6?
Height in floors starting with floor 20 is determined by the height above the lowest level, around 70 feet underground, divided by 13'4". For some reason the geniuses who came up with the floor plan use the term "floor" to mean floor count up to the 6th, and as a unit of measurement from 20 up.

hunser
Dec 2, 2013, 2:22 PM
^ Yes, the floor plan may seem a bit silly. But I see it like this: Height to parapet: 417m. Ceiling height: 4.064m. Now 417/4.064=102.6. So for me the tower is the equivalent of a 102-story building. :)

The Port Authority and the Durst Organization.

Technically the Port Authority owns all of Silversteins towers as well (minus 7), but he signed a 99 year lease for the space in 2001.

If you want to get technical, the tower is taller on this side. So just add 6 ft to the 1,368 and 1,776 ft height figures when you view from this side. This mockery courtesy of the CTBUH.

Incredible and Eerie Video: Just Listen to the Haunting Sounds Coming From the New World Trade Center

Dec. 3, 2013

One World Trade Center, sitting on the original six-building complex of the World Trade Center that was attacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, has been filmed from various, dizzying angles with its completion this year and was recently named the tallest building in the United States.

But aside from its impressive looks, there’s another feature that has received less attention but is well-known to those who find themselves on the lower side of Manhattan on a windy day.

The building, colloquially known as the Freedom Tower, emits an eerie, haunting sound in high wind storms.

Take a listen:

f78sDMlufFs

The above recording appears to have been taken recently, but it’s not the first time the sound has been documented.

This video records the high-pitched howling of the building during Superstorm Sandy last year:

And this one was filmed in January 2013:

Much of the tristate region was under a dense fog advisory on Thursday.

Visibility was greatly reduced in New York City and particularly in lower Manhattan.

FOX 5 morning program Good Day NY aired video of a fog-engulfed 1 World Trade Center.

Only the top of the building and its 408-foot needle could be seen.

Westfield to Buy World Trade Center Retail Stake

Westfield Group (WDC), Australia’s biggest shopping mall operator, will invest $800 million to take full control of the retail space at New York’s World Trade Center.

The company agreed to buy Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s 50 percent stake in the retail part of lower Manhattan’s World Trade Center site, bringing its investment in the property to more than $1.4 billion, the Sydney-based company and the Port Authority said in separate statements yesterday.

Joint Venture

Westfield first acquired a 99-year lease interest in the retail concourse at the original trade center six weeks before it was destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and sold it back to the Port Authority in December 2003. The group agreed in July 2011 to pay $612.5 million to take a half stake in a joint venture with the Port Authority to develop the center. The retail complex is scheduled to open in 2015.

The project will encompass about 365,000 square feet (34,000 square meters) of retail space, with another 90,000 square feet to be added in future, according to the statement.

You might be right. I had read that on Wiki a while back and it had said completed. I know the whole complex was opened officially on April 4, 1973.

Edit: yeah you're right "December 1970 - The North Tower of the WTC is topped off at 1,368 feet on December 23". It actually had tenants move in a few weeks before that too.

As I always said, had they ruled this an antenna, that would have taken the burden of "appearance" off the so called spire.
The Empire State Building antenna at least doesn't have that burden, but even as is, the antenna there is much more suited for the building than the "spire" here.

The facade on 4WTC is so good in those pics, it makes the building look almost invisible. That is crazy...

The tower is not perfect and the antennae is far from looking good. Nonetheless, as an admirer of the former twins, I have to admit that this tower does its job pretty well to replace them. It is a tribute to the twins's design in a more modern way and its presence is almost as strong as what was there before. Considering what happened on this site, it is, in itself, a real tour de force which should be underlined more often.

If you are to lazy to put radome on the spire and communications ring, cover the spire in whatever the Willis Tower's antennae has (is it radome?) and cover that ring in glass in the very least.

I could live with the mast. It's the ring that puts the ug in ugly for me. A nice rf transparent enclosure would do a lot for the looks.
