NATIONALLY RENOWNED LEGENDS HOSPITALITY CHOSEN TO DEVELOP AND OPERATE
THREE-STORY OBSERVATION DECK ATOP ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER

Date: Mar 20, 2013
Press Release Number: 31-2013

A History of the construction of 1WTC?
I wonder if they will go into great detail about all the wasted, time, money design changes and corruption it took to get this project finished?

Man I hope they ditch the friggin ads and let people see the view and have some quiet time while they are up there, If I want to see guady flashing lights and ads I'll go to Times Square.
I do like Traynors Idea for projecting the names of the buildings, sites, etc on the glass for tourists to learn about NYC, but it will get in the way for photography, if it was kept on only one level I'd be OK with it.

At least the ad billboards in the obvservation deck will take everyones attention away from bitching about the spire/radome/mast cluster F#@%.
The closer this building gets to being finished to more it looks like it belongs as an attraction at Niagra Falls or Vegas, not an office tower with a view at the top.

There is no scandal. The original glass for the original type of base would have broken into dangerous shards. I don't get why you guys are so ignorant. Besides the new base is better because the base to the original Twin Towers were boxes as well. It is a symbolic gesture.

None of what you said refuted what I said. Yes the glass would shatter in trials. That is because they went with the cheap Chinese alternative somewhere back in 2007-2009 time period. They could have fixed the glass, but the cost and time of shipping the proper equipment to china was too high after the wrong equipment was already sent, and so everything was scrapped. The problem could have been avoided if the original glass maker was chosen as the contractor, instead they went to China and got shit. Now you call their mistake a 'symbolic gesture to the original towers'. That's a great cover for everything that has gone wrong on this project....

Also I would still like to make it clear that the glass going up is awesome, and I am sure to love it when its done. I am just sad for the prismatic glass and chamfered corners that we nearly got.

Why is nobody discussing the renewed potential for a restaurant at the top of 1WTC?? The renderings from Legends certainly show a restaurant, and yet I here nothing from the forum? What gives? It should be big news!

You're right, most people don't care about skyscrapers. But I don't know what people you would expect to find on a skyscraper forum. Regardless though,
that a lot of people may not care about something does not mean it should not be correct.

They sure dont seem to work much these days. This is one time when the blasé' attitude of New Yorkers really gets on my nerves. Public pressure is such a powerful force, and it's a shame because it seems like only Nimbys decide to wield that power in the realm of skyscrapers.

Those tridents are what remained of the Twin Towers after 9/11 when they collapsed. They are nothing more than memorial pieces now.

It's not a real restaurant. It will probably be something like Sbarro's which was in the South Tower of the original World Trade Center.

I may be in the minority here, but I like the redesigned base a lot better then the original base. I think it's the glass they're using for the base that makes me like it.

Anyway, I'm sure this has been answered already in the 1500+ pages of this thread, but I'd appreciate it if someone can tell me approximately when the outside of this building (cladding, rings and spire) will be finished.

There's some odd, special quality about the New York skyline, maybe it's true of any skyline, but I find it especially true in Manhattan. You could build any slew of new and different buildings, but once complete, they fit. They just look like they belong, like they could've been there forever. It's pretty cool...

It probably won't though. I have a lot more hope though that maybe Two World Trade Center might have a restaurant at the top floors since there is still a chance to install a service elevator. I thought about it and I do want to suggest it to the Port Authority, but I don't know if they will listen.

Hmmmm. I have to wonder if this rotating beacon will be just whats needed for this thing to be judged as a spire as opposed to a mast and be counted toward the official height now. While i do like the mast, now that i see the tip,i feel perhaps they should have made the entire thing out of,what appears to be stainless steel. Just my .02

When I watch this picture, my first thought, that comes in my mind immediately is:

Looks like there has been a thief who stole all the precious parts of the tower, during the night. Now, only skeleton remains.

The antenna, and the ring.. completely ruined by redesign.

Strangely, the most shocking part to my eyes is the redesign of the ring. Now it looks like a stupid skeleton of iron. Shameful.

I thought about it and I do want to suggest it to the Port Authority, but I don't know if they will listen.

I know this should be in the 2WTC thread, but the PA only gets the building started if it gets past it's minimum lease requirement. The complex is interconnected below street level so the port had the tower built up to street level and capped. It's Silverstein's favorite tower and I don't think he'll let any one change it. Besides, the top floors are mechanical and the few floors below those that are above the beginning of the diamonds are prime locations for tenants. If just wouldn't make sense to put a restaurant there.

Closer to topic. The reason we had an outdoor observation deck and a restaurant in the twins was because we had two 210' square floor plates with usable space in the cores. The current tower only has a fraction of the space. I'd guess in the range of 1/5 if not less for those two reasons. There isn't another tower to but antennas on and 2WTC would only be useable for localized transmitters in the mech floors like we see in the Willis tower above the Skydeck floors (dishes are visible behind the glass).

No kidding. I just checked that out and that is the piece it will rest in in its final set up. They'll have to raise the crane to get these sections to the top. Lastly, I don't think I see the mirror assembly installed in the section. I thought I read that it will be installed in fall, long after the section is in place. I have no clue how one would do that.

IMO it doesn't matter if the beacon causes it to be judged a spire. We all know what this thing is, and we all know how tall this tower really is despite what some committee says.

Put WTC1 and the Shanghai tower side by side and tell me which is taller. Most people will say the Shanghai tower is taller.

Now, if the antenna was incorporated directly into the design then that might be different. The Chrysler building does a fantastic job with this. It is seamless, and looks like part of the building. WTC1 by contrast looks like a building that tops out at ~1300ft and has a giant stick on top.

Does anyone here know what percent of the spire will likely be used for communications equipment?

If the equipment space demand will be considerably less than originally thought since its design, It would be a nice if they could limit mounting all the transmitting equipment to the rings and clad the spire with the brushed stainless look panels they used at the tip.

I know things don't work that way in the real world but it would be a cool look especially with the sun rise & sun set.

Good Luck Carlos....We miss that telephoto lense & updates

the three superposed silver rings were not supposed to have a "skeleton" appearance. They were fully consistent.

If they made it out of stainless steel it would have cost more than making two spires.

I am officially coining the term "THE SPEAR" for this excuse of a spire!

Is there any word on an exact date/time for the final beacon piece to be placed? Any type of ceremony or such?

When are we expecting the beacon to be added to the "mast"? Can we expect it to be up by the end of this weekend?

Everyone, your complaints will go unheeded, so look at the bright side of things. Like the fact that while Towers 3 and 2 remain in limbo, Tower 1 and 4 are almost complete. Oh, and btw IMO the base is much better like this, gives it a more pronounced presence, and nods to the former Twin Towers' box shape. It is too bad about the spire, but what are you going to do?

There's some odd, special quality about the New York skyline, maybe it's true of any skyline, but I find it especially true in Manhattan. You could build any slew of new and different buildings, but once complete, they fit. They just look like they belong, like they could've been there forever. It's pretty cool...

Your post does have some validity to it. I'm sure folks in Pittsburgh felt that way as they built buildings like the US Steel Building or Cathedral of Learning, as did some Philadelphians recently when they built Comcast Center or even One and Two Liberty back in the '80s. I honestly thought it wouldn't blend in well at all with the rest of the skyline, but I like Comcast Center.

At first, I wasn't too sure One WTC would fit in, but as this tower nears completion, it definitely fits. While I do miss the Twin Towers, I am taking a liking to this building and look forward to its opening!

Maybe not. I've been suspecting they'd slow down the erection to work on the guys. I'm not sure, since the mast would probably be fine without guys until hurricane season.

Even so, I doubt they'd take the risk of counting on no windy days for the next couple months.

Pic isn't fake, it's real but the "meteor" isn't. That's merely a high altitude jet contrail. :haha::haha::rolleyes::rolleyes:

UPDATE: Oops I stand corrected (somewhat). Apparrently there was a meteor visible in NYC today however the photo in question still depicts what I believe is a jet contrail and not one from the meteor.

It will get done when it gets done. Any date the Port Authority happens to mention I just ignore it because they never live up to their word. So anything "official" coming from them is BS. The Observation Deck was supposed to open summer 2014 now they pushed it back to early 2015. The only thing they completed "on time" sort of is the 9/11 Memorial. I rather just wait for it to be finished without someone saying it will be finished by a certain date. The weather has been better the last few days so I'm sure the rest of the spire will be finished soon. All in time I guess.

And Wikipedia works by people correcting mistakes they find, not by complaining about it.

Where's the source for that? cause that sounds way to long of a date.

The cranes can't work when the winds are 30mph or higher at cranes. So it is has been very hard to predict any date, and putting up final sections requires a few days in a row of low winds because crane has to jump, lift sections, and then come back down. In the meantime there is a couple weeks worth of electrical work on ground first. But scheduling any sort of ceremony this far ahead, is impossible. The weather forecast for example for next week is bad already with snow and rain Monday and then around 25mph at 1500 ft for Tuesday and wed is 25-30mph. So hopefully we can get a few hours in next week to lift up rings and work, they have to go in first due to crane logistics

Because the planned cladding for the rest of the spire would have matched and looked just as good. It is the only part of the cladding that remains. This is what happens when you remove parts of a structure with no thought to a redesign.

There was a playground here on Staten Island that used to be like that. They got rid of it and replaced it with ultra-safe no-fun equipment. Kind of like how they cheaped out on this building ;)

The whole spire should have been made out of the same metal as the beacon with a observation pod somewhere at 1,600 ft. So much potential to make this tower even greater.

Can any of you guys post a diagram between the size difference of 1 wtc mast and the north tower antenna in terms of height and thickness?or which one is thicker.

The spire/antenna/mast atop 1 WTC makes it about 100 ft taller then the original North Tower with it's antenna. The the original antenna was 308 ft and the new spire/mast is 408 ft. The thickness was about the same on both, however, if the randome was installed on the new mast it would have been 23 feet thicker then the current antenna design and the original.

I knew about the height difference just wonder if there was a diagram, but thanks for the thickness info.

Im sure this has been answered before but are those huge rings around the spire/mast going to be removed after the spire/mast is completed or are they going to stay up there?

Each section of the spire has removable platforms that are needed by the construction workers to connect each section together.

Once the spire is complete, then those temporary platforms are removed.

That is not what the original cladding was going to look like. Did you ever look closely at the old renders??

Sigh... of course it would not have been made out of that material, but yes, the basic shape, with a spiral element beginning farther down would have been what it looked like. But yeah, I know the spire would not have been a bunch of repeating tips :koko:

Okay, because you did say that it was actually part of the old cladding, so I responded as such.

It will still be visible The spire,,from many (50-60) miles away,, I remember being able to see the spire on the N. Tower while driving in from Cleveland.. Lets just,, well I anyway hope,, they don't deck the "thing on the roof" with a bunch of Gaudy BullShi*..

Tech Talk Guy,, I believe he's referring to window washing track and the other 2 rings to hold the micro dishes,, Those will be permanant. The "stairs and "doghouse" and cranes will be removed. Sorry 4 not dual quoting... Just don't seem to get that right most the time... And ChiBears when will we expect your next animated base update? Those ar actually damn cool, however the bottom of 1 side looks like nothing has started....
