Look from the aerial picture you can clearly tell that One World Trade Center has surpassed the Beekman Tower in height. That proves anyone that doubts it wrong.

I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but you have no idea what the Beekman building is, do you?
Either that, or you don't know what perspective is.

Is it just me,or does anyone realize that 1 WTC, although tall, will be pretty skinny and weak in the skyline? If all the buildings were being constructed at almost the same time, this wouldn't be an issue, but now we won't be able to see the real strength of the new WTC until 2015.

It's on the upper left of the Woolworth Building. You can see a silver of the building or if you want New York by Gehry.

First of all, you're looking at the skyline from quite an elevation. Any aerial shot will to some degree make a supertall's height look less than what it is.

The there's the issue of perspective. 1WTC is situated further away from 7WTC, making distance another role player in perceived height.

If every skyscraper in that view right now were lined up an one big-ass row, 1WTC to crane-tip would be surpassed only by American International and 40 Wall. I think... Corrections/updates are greatly appreciated.

i never looked at it that way but you are right. i love 7WTC but always yearned for it to be taller but i guess that's because of the void in the skyline:( so, yeah, it is a great compliment to 1WTC and the others too when their time comes:cheers:

The steel is up another floor today. From my apartment it still doesnt look taller than Beekman though.

sw5710
Jun 28, 2011, 10:17 PM
I did a little math. The current steel going up is to 883'8'' The cranes have been jumped up and are about 20 building floors tall going from floor 70 at 853' to near 1125' Aviation charts show the top of Beekman at 895' above sea level and the building at 867' above the street. The street is 28' above sea level in that area. I don't know the ground elevation at 1 WTC.

Matt
Jun 28, 2011, 10:17 PM
Hopefully when we do surpass Beekman, we can finally put to rest all these posts about whether or not we've surpassed Beekman yet...

Traynor
Jun 28, 2011, 10:53 PM
As far as I knew, with the latest core steel rising to 883'8" then we definitely passed Beekman/Gehry...

I hope so because I already posted the updated Lower Manhattan Checklist the other day:

Yes 1 WTC is now 883'8'' tall. taller in building height then the The 867' or 870' Beekman. The Beekman is on higher ground arround 20 feet higher.

Based on what I've seen, the best views will come from the JC promenade.

I think the best views will be similar to what, and where the best views were for the originals.

Cool pic of the blimp over Manhattan...

I'm surprised no one ever docks a blimp at the old Empire Statement Building mooring mast, just as a way to get attention for promotions.

The updraft makes this impossible. The mast was only used once for this reason.

Outdoor Observation Deck at One World Trade Center a No-Go, Developer Says

June 17, 2011
By Jill Colvin

Mayor Michael Bloomberg would be among the visitors to an outdoor observation deck at the soon-to-be-completed One World Trade Center — that is, if there were one.

But because of logistical issues, the new One World Trade Center will include two stories of indoor observation space on its top floors, but no outdoor deck, the developer says.

Mayor Bloomberg thinks an outdoor observation deck at the new Freedom tower would be a draw. (DNAinfo/Benjamin Fractenberg)

You can't have the public on the roof of 1 WTC with a 350' or 400' tower broadcasting right there. Too close. That is why it was ok for the public on the roof of the other twin tower. Not the same risk with the RF!

From just two weeks ago:

The antenna really has nothing to do with it. Long explanation why it isn't, but in short, you get a higher RF dose from your cellphone when it's only getting 1 bar of signal. Despite the recent WHO sorta-kinda-maybe ruling, phones aren't dangerous either.

The lack of an observation deck is entirely due to the fact that the towers are going to be self-contained air-cooled structures. The previous buildings were water cooled, which opened up the tops of the buildings for other uses. Sticking an observation deck on top of the cooling plant is just not economical. They actually tried it with this building, original plans put the Obs. Deck and restaurant above the plant, but it got rearranged during value engineering.

1 Bar on a cell is more RF then standing besides a transmitting tv tower? I never heard that before. My cell would sometimes not work it was getting squashed when I worked on or near transmitting towers up untill 10 years ago. But the self-contained building i can understand that situation in not putting a deck on the roof. There won't be a rooftop deck on any building on this site. It looks like 1 WTC is going to be verry crowded with broadcast equipment.

Probably because you're not familiar with the inverse square law. RF exposure levels drop rapidly with distance. By the time you get to 200 feet, you're getting a higher dose from a 1 watt cellphone an inch away from your head, than the 50,000 watt broadcast antenna. Especially since the TV antenna is focusing the majority of its energy in a linear direction parallel to the horizon. Standing at the base, away from the broadcast direction, means you're getting an even lower dose.

That is the key Away from the broadcasting direction.

It's a little counter intuitive, but if you think about it, the weaker the receive signal on the phone, the higher the transmitted rf from the phone will be. The phone automatically adjusts transmit to be inversely proportional to receive, since weak receive means you're further away from the base transmitter, and need a stronger signal to reach back to it.

Standing near a transmitting tower is also nothing to worry about. The antennas are fairly directional and you're going to be beneath the beam. In fact, exactly below most antennas that are oriented horizontally if the weakest spot you can pick. The folks on the floors beneath the arrays aren't going to be picking up much of the signal.

Will there be an observation deck in this tower because I will likie to go up there once it's completed.
Kind of sucks that there is no outside observation deck but I'm sure the developers had their reasons.

Any new news on if they have broadcasters that will relocate back here. And I think the steel from 72-74 is a node on the SW or W side. The last time there were nodes they did the same jump up.
