I can imagine, with all the projects. Generally speaking, what times does the noise start and stop? Can you see a lot of it from your apartment? That part of downtown is really changing.

I have a direct corner view of the 609 Main project. From the roof of the parking garage come the views of the residential tower at the Market Square Garage as well as the residential tower about to start up according to Urbannizer.

As far as times, well, let's just say some days are much longer in terms of noise than others. And when they're doing concrete pours, all bets are off in terms of time... ;)

As busy as I thought the Houston construction scene was when I visited a couple of months ago, it has ramped up even more when I dropped over the Christmas weekend. The crane is up at 1885 Yorktown, the work on the Galleria is moving right along, the two Hyatts are starting to get clad, and that's just in the Galleria area.

Across W. Alabama From the Icehouse, Those 3 2-Story Apartment Complexes Are Now Making Way for One 6-Story Complex

CHOMP GOES the excavator on a portion of the 3 adjacent 1950s and ’60s-era complexes at 1920 W. Alabama St., 1924 Marshall St. (pictured at left), and 2810 McDuffie St., right across the street from the Alabama Icehouse and just south of Admiral Linens.

In late July residents of the 3 complexes were told to move out by September 1, so that new owners City Centre at Midtown, an affiliate of developers Dolce Living, could be begin tearing down the 2-story buildings to clear the 1.58 acre parcel for one 6-story, 258-unit luxury apartment building.

Though it will be situated in the western edge of Montrose’s Winlow Place area, the building will be named City Centre at Midtown.

Skanska plans at a future date to construct Capitol Tower on the former Houston Club Building site. In the meantime, construction continues on a 7-story parking garage with est completion of 4Q15. After a decision to proceed with the new tower is made, Skanska will expand the garage to ten floors and build the tower. See website and video.

It's just a shame the design of the building is so damn boring. When Mr. So and so was talking about the design of the building I almost fell asleep. Then there is the other guy saying "we started from the inside out." Exactly, because everyone can tell you didn't do diddly when it came to the exterior. The inside lobby isn't anything new. They have been making generic lobbies like that since the 80's or earlier. Its great theres a new tower but the only thing good about it is the open air meeting spot.

As I recall, they had a dozen patterns for the exterior that were all a variation of what they picked. That said, it could have been a lot worse.

But I'm getting hints the tower may not rise immediately, although the activity onsite seems to imply they are full speed ahead. We'll know soon enough.

It's an alright looking building but its basically just a rectangle. It looks fit for a suburban highrise to me. Yea, its infill and thats great but I think a beautiful original design would go well next to the Pennzoil building. Anyways, I hope it looks nice when its finished.

One thing Dallas has that might be copied on some of the new highrises in Houston is LED banding that allows the buildings to display graphics, lettering, etc. in a form that looks a bit like Times Square. I saw it on the side of the Omni Hotel downtown and at least two other office buildings. They've also incorporated dynamic color imagery into the lights of the Reunion Tower ball. It's pretty slick. I could imagine such a display on the backside of the GRB facing I-69.
You must be from dallas.

You must be from dallas. Just remember when you look up top of this page, the header's skyline of select skyscrapers doesn't have one of dallas's "unique or better" skyscrapers on it but infact one of Houston's.

Museum of Fine Arts Houston unveils dramatic $450 million redevelopment plan

Buoyed by some of the largest donations in the city's history, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will unveil a $450 million project today that envisions its campus as the cultural heart of the city.

The project, by Steven Holl Architects, is the most exciting in the institution's 90-year history, board chairman Richard Kinder said. The plan, named the Fayez S. Sarofim Campus, is so transformational that in five years Houstonians might not recognize the 1000 block of Bissonnet.

There's nowhere to go but up in Texas Children's Hospital $506 million expansion

At the Texas Medical Center, there's nowhere to go but up.

The board of Texas Children's Hospital has "enthusiastically approved" a $506 million expansion on the medical center campus that includes construction of a 19-story tower on top of the existing building base next to Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women, officials announced Tuesday.

The project will add 640,000 square feet and 130 beds and make the tower the new home to Texas Children's Heart Center.

The addition, slated to be completed in 2018, is the latest development supported through the hospital's $475 million Promise campaign, a fundraising effort to "ensure the future of Texas Children's as a lead in pediatric and women's health," a release from the board states.

The new tower focuses on additional space for pediatric and cardiovascular intensive care, as well as new operating rooms. After the tower is completed, the Emergency Center and other areas in the hospital's West Tower will be renovated.

Dinerstein to break ground on high-rise rental tower

Despite a potential slowdown in the Houston economy, the Dinerstein Cos. is not losing steam.

The apartment development firm is expecting to begin construction next week on a high-rise at Holcombe and Cambridge that it announced last fall.

Even with the plunge in oil prices and the escalation of in close-in apartment construction, the inner-city is still a smart play, said Clay Hicks, Dinerstein’s president of apartment management.

“People really want to live where they work and play and eat, and I don’t think that’s going to change,” said Hicks, who recently joined the company after 8 years at Greystar.

Growth brings new housing options to The Woodlands

As the population and business growth continues to skyrocket, The Woodlands is working to keep up with the growth by expanding housing options.

***

In addition, the Howard Hughes Corp., parent of The Woodlands Development Co., is investigating a possible new 20-story high-rise condominium development in the Waterway District, said Paul Layne, executive vice president of master planned communities for The Howard Hughes Corp.

The Howard Hugh Corp. has preliminary plans for the high-rise condo and is working to determine whether there is enough demand for the development.

"We're really trying to determine the level of interest people would have," Layne said. "We've done some focus groups. We would like people to reach out to us if they have an interest, to let us know. It would have phenomenal amenities and a walkable lifestyle in the Waterway District."

There will be job cuts in the energy sector and obviously demand for housing will decrease next year. 2014 was an aberration to population growth. Houston saw its 4th fastest growing year in history if it kept pace with Texas. That will be revealed in March when metro numbers come out.

Job growth this year 2015 will be 63k. That's pretty much what ATL averaged in 2014. Slow for Houston standards but still really fast compared to US and rest of US. Population growth won't be affected. Houston averaged 120k a year last decade, sped up to about 140k in 2013, and def. more in 2014. Will go back to 120k a year average with slowdown since Houston's natural increase and immigration have been constant in good times or bad.

It's always interesting to hear people panic. Energy industry will shed jobs but it's 38% of Houston's economy and the city is still growing off fertility and natural reasons, leads the US in that. Translation, other sectors especially private healthcare, construction, financial and manufacturing will keep rolling.

http://www.houston.org/pdf/research/quickview/economy_at_a_glance.pdf

Houston will no longer be a fast grower without peers. Now it will boom in line with a DEN, SEA, PDX, ATX, DFW, etc.

* Trivia, since 1994 Houston area has averaged job growth of 49k a year. This years anticipated growth, slow to 2014 and 2012 Houston standards will still be a successful year as job growth will resume. Next year 2016 oil prices will again escalate.

Appreciate the voice of informed reason here. You should check out the speeches, research articles, and regional economic statistics and indicators published online by the Dallas Fed, lots of good data there.
I've read the updates by the Fed and Dallas Fed. It's not looking good for the energy sector which started shedding jobs in November (6 months earlier than anticipated). The articles that cite "wait 6 months to know the ramifications of the oil price collapse" are outdated because it's been 7 months since prices started falling and are past the "wait and see" stage. The energy sector has been adjusting with oil prices daily and started shrinking in Nov. US shale production will still grow but slower, which will stabilize the market. Houston finished 2014 with 120k jobs created, the most EVER in Houston history for any single year. This year the economy will create between 45k-65k jobs. Yes that's a slowdown for Houston but it's still at natl average or higher than the US as a whole. To remind, the 50% reduction in job growth is not good but the metro has had a 49 a year job growth average since 1994 and only since 2011 has been on a torrid pace averaging 70k-120k in job growth.

Despite energy sector shedding jobs since Nov, Texas still leads the US in job growth

Texas added 31,100 private sector jobs in December, continuing its steady job growth throughout all of 2014, predicted ADP. Private-sector jobs typically account for the lion’s share of all jobs created each month.

If ADP’s forecast turns out to be true, Texas will have added more than 30,000 jobs every month in 2014 except for March. ADP’s numbers are in advance of December’s official employment numbers for the private and public sector, which will be released for Texas by the Texas Workforce Commission on Jan. 23 and for all states by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Jan. 27.

In November, Texas officially gained 34,800 private- and public-sector jobs, but that figure likely will be revised in January.

Texas also outpaced the nation in its overall 2014 job growth rate of 3.6 percent vs. 2.2 percent nationally, ADP said.

ADP and Moody’s Analytics Inc. forecast monthly job growth for 29 states plus Washington, D.C. Each month usually is a competition between Texas, California and Florida to see who leads in job creation.

http://bizbeatblog.dallasnews.com/2015/01/adp-texas-added-31100-private-jobs-in-december-outpaces-2014-u-s-growth-rate.html/
I expect California to finish 2015 as the state with most jobs added but by all inclination by those same experienced analysts Texas should still be #2 or #3, depending on whether Florida speeds up or stays pat.

Texas is anticipated to add between 225k-290k jobs this year, Houston 45k-65k this year. DFW, ATX, and SATX will stay pat with 2014 #s, if not speed up, this year. Midland will see a decline and other oil industry centric cities. Houston will weather it positively but compared to the unprecedented boom of the last 3 years, Houstonians will be disappointed in their slowdown. From peerless economical growth to having to share the spotlight with DEN, SEA, ATX, PDX, DFW, SFBA, RDU, etc.

If it counts for anything, Houston leads the US in creating 417% of the jobs it lost in the recession (end of 2014). Second place DFW is now just barely over 300% and then there is a big drop to third place SFBA at around 140%. SA and ATX not counting because they are smaller cities but both are also above 250% each. Cities like ATL, LA, CHI, Philly just broke even or are still in the process of doing so. A year of slower than torrid growth won't kill Houston, it's already really far ahead, and oil will bounce back and stabilize in the $70-$85 USD/PerBar range. Which will speed up the job growth in Houston in 2016 to 65k-80k range in 2016, as anticipated by market observers. Saudi Arabias $750 billion rainy day fund runs out by Jan 2016 and ALL major oil players US, Russ, Venezuela, OPEC will no longer afford low $40 oil prices. Their stock markets, natl budgets, corps, etc cannot afford it. Production will curb, it's already started to.

Oil price collapse won't have any detrimental affect on pop growth, you need Spider-Man web flinging powers to seal every womans vaginal wall before intercourse to stop Texas from gaining people at the numbers it's seen the last 4 years. Immigration has been consistently constant in Houston and Texas since the 80s oil bust, 2000s dotcom bust and Great Recession, this oil collapse will be no different.

BTW suburbanization across the US increased 2013 going from 2012, highlighted by a boom in the construction, equity/financing, and steel making industries with low interest rates (in relation to 2000s). The trend will obviously continue everywhere in the US in 2014 and 2015 but will lower oil prices accelerate US suburbanization?

Anyone have thoughts about that?

With respect to your statement on California, are these jobs going to be going predominantly to immigrants or has the domestic outflow from California ceased?

I don't think it matters. What has sustained NYC as the absolute top job creator in terms of actual numbers the past two years is the influx of immigrants. Houston's been helped by the immigrants, too.

San Francisco's job numbers are probably going to be revised upward when the BLS adjusts the stats in March.

I wasn't implying that it matters. The idea that California would be a leader of job growth simply surprised me because I hadn't realized that their population as a whole was no longer in a period of stagnation relative to the rest of that state's history.

One Market Square may be dead, but maybe he meant the 40-story Market Square tower, which is under construction. I think that one will be 502 feet.

Overall, the list looks good. I just wish more were under construction in downtown. Only 6 over 200 feet are under construction from the list if you remove the Skyhouse. I know that there are also some mid-rises going up in downtown, but I just wish there were more.
