The only one we know for certain that wasn't already announced as having started is St. James Place. But there's so much either proposed, in the demo phase or starting construction that it's hard to keep up with. Maybe the pause over the past few weeks will give us all a chance to catch our breath.

BisNow's got a number of aerials from the Woodlands in their latest newsletter, getting us up to date on all the new construction - which is substantial. I'm not even sure all these buildings are listed in the database.

New proposals that might not have been posted here earlier include Three Hughes Landing (not the Exxon Mobil pair of buildings) and a hotel; both have yet to break ground. And the Westin is off an running...

Guessing residential only. Across Kirby and maybe a block north, this office/retail/residential or hotel development was proposed:

Haven't heard much about it, still thinking they are trying to get all the permits in order.

They are going to knock everything down but the Pappasitos on the corner? Are they going to build around it? I hope Khyber Grill (lone building on far right with red awnings) has plans to relocate. Great Indian food.

I'm not exactly liking the tan panels; the average LaQuinta is tan and orange, and it is both horrible and apparently a pattern for certain older buildings in Dallas/Fort Worth.

Did any of you Syracuse basketball fans get the inside humor of the Pearl on Washington development?

If that actually happens...it looks like an incredible project!

Especially in it's proposed location. A building like that could go up in Uptown or Downtown and it wouldn't be as noticeable but this thing would really help anchor the general TMC-DT main street/red Line corridor.

I agree. Like the "Transco Tower" (if you prefer "Williams Tower") is to Uptown/Galleria, this would function as a landmark for the Med Center -- sorely needed!

Crane going up today at the old Texaco bldg. Wondering if this is for the new tower. Didn't think that was to happen till after the restoration in progress is complete. Big crane! San Jacinto blocked off.

You can see one of the cranes coming in from I-45 S, and the building is being construction in the center of downtown.

I think because it's in the center of a cluster of highrises, it can only be seen from certain directions. Ah, well.

As for the tweaking of the Perennial, I sense that the architects start out with bold plans, then chicken out and build something more pedestrian. The rumored elimination of the twist in the Hermann helix highrise was the first hint. :koko:

From my knowledge phase one has a parking garage, so I guess that is what the crane is for.

Jul 13, 2014, 2:45 PM
I suppose it could be needed as they progress with phase underway, but it's for more than a garage as it's many stories taller than both buildings. The old building on main being rehabed and converted to a Marriott required no such crane, so I'mcurious. They're finishing up today. The planned building is attractive. So much going on in immediate blocks, maybe they sped up schedule. Though parking not yet banned, the block across, the Houston Center addition, now has promotional banners posted on fence surrounding!

the crane has to be taller than the other Texaco Buildings so it can pivot/rotate around without hitting the tops of any of the buildings. pretty sure its just the garage/podium/retail (unfortunately)

Record size residential project set to rise downtown

A developer plans to break ground in just a few weeks on perhaps the largest residential tower ever built in downtown Houston, a project symbolic of this city's healthy economy and downtown's emergence as a suddenly sought-after place to call home.

The Texas-size tower is set to rise 40 stories and house 463 apartments built to near-condominium standards, the developers said Monday.

"It's big," said Jack Lee, president of Oakmont Group, which is managing the construction. "It's bigger than any other downtown rental property we know of."

The project, to be called Market Square Tower, will be built just off Market Square Park on the southern half of the block bounded by Preston, Louisiana, Milam and Congress.

Units will range from a 550-square-foot efficiency to a three-bedroom, three-bath apartment with around 1,950 square feet. Rents will range from around $1,700 to $8,800 per month.

I was unaware Hines was even involved in getting the Amegy tower and the Hilcorp tower built. Their ideas tend to gestate for a long time, which I guess means they are out looking for money or tenants before they make formal announcements. And weren't they supposed to be involved in a building on Waugh Drive?

This is saying it would be the tallest residential building in downtown. That would make it at least 502 feet tall since One Park Place is 501 feet. This also says it'll break ground next month.

Little tidbit from BisNow about the Market Square residential tower:

"What’ll really set Market Square Tower apart is its amenity package. (Philip tells us the team debated what worked best for Houston and basically decided to just do it all, or as we call it "the Zsa Zsa Gabor Method.") If being next to Market Square Park and Buffalo Bayou Park isn't enough for residents, it'll have two floors of amenities, including an indoor basketball court, virtual golf simulator, and spa. It'll also have two pool decks, including a rooftop one 500 feet above the street. Terrifyingly, the glass-encased pool will cantilever out beyond the face of the building. At the base will be 22k SF of street-level retail leased by Shelby, Estus & Co’s Tom Estus."

So the question about height has been answered - as has the question about the pool (would you swim in a glass-bottom pool that looks 500 feet down to the street? Hope this thing doesn't spring a leak!) :titanic:
