The Gables looks gorgeous. Seems like it will be taller than the neighboring BBVA Compass tower. Can't wait to see it go up!!

With these two, now we're potentially up to 117 high rises proposed, under construction, or on hold in Houston. Let's see when they go public.

If one proposes, someone opposes.

First thing that made me go, "What?" was the idea that any group would oppose more construction along Post Oak. The second thing was this yet unannounced 50-story AmREIT project which was just casually slipped into the article. The third thing was this group's claimed consent to the BHP development (still waiting to see what they think of Apache's proposed HQ). Something tells me they're nervous about new residents and more traffic on their boulevard. Again, if they hate it so much, they can vote for zoning.

New PAC opposes high-rise on Post Oak Boulevard (http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/blog/breaking-ground/2014/05/new-pac-opposes-transit-plan-on-post-oak-boulevard.html)

You didn't go "what?" to the thought that the guy lives in the most traffic congested surface street in probably all of TX and probably the SW (Post Oak) and he's complaining about traffic while opposing BRT improvements.

Can't believe idiots like that guy even get attention from the press.

Houston Methodist Reveals Plans for New Inpatient Tower

Houston Methodist will build a new 193-bed hospital in The Woodlands and a 390-bed inpatient tower at its current campus in the Texas Medical Center.

The new hospital in The Woodlands and its Medical Center tower are just the beginning of what will be a major investment for the Houston hospital system. Marc Boom, Houston Methodist president and CEO, said in a statement that the hospital system plans to invest more than $1 billion in expanding and replacing its facilities in the Houston area over the next three years.

Separately, the new patient tower at the Texas Medical Center, which will cost about $540 million to build, will replace patient beds in Houston Methodist Hospital’s original Main building and add advanced heart and neurosurgery operating rooms. It is also expected to be completed in 2017.

The inpatient tower next to Houston Methodist Hospital will accommodate 390 beds — including 102 intensive care beds — expanded operating suites, hybrid suites and a dedicated cardiology floor with 14 interventional catheterization labs. The new tower will include high-tech operating rooms that will expand the hospital’s ability to provide image guided heart and brain procedures.

It's the next phase and residential tower of BLVD Place.

37 stories in the initial rendering

FWIW, "Landmark Tower" was part of the caption - not the name of the tower. It works though. That was the one that I was hoping would break ground before any other residential project at the site. Hanover Post Oak isn't turning out half bad though.

Mid Main mixed-use development to break ground soon

The office portion of Mid Main, a mixed-use development in Midtown, is slated to break ground as soon as preleasing is complete, Transwestern said June 2.

Houston-based Transwestern is in charge of finding office tenant(s) for the eight-story, 203,316-square-foot, Class A office building at 3501 Main St., which is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2016.

The office building’s 545-space parking garage will include 9,716 square feet of high-end retail space on the first floor. Houston-based Lewis Property Co. is leasing the retail space.

Houston-based RHS Interests Inc. is developing the mixed-use project, which will also include 363 multifamily units and a 773-space parking garage.

Here's something that may be an actual proposal, the West Houston Master Plan. The site was on the Planning Commission agenda and the applicant's request was approved. I don't see a whole lot of "towering".:koko: It looks like the taller buildings actually fit the site nicely without dominating it, so it can't really "tower" over the neighboring properties. Maybe Mister Tort Reform Hypocrite has been agitating in other neighborhoods besides his own.:hell:

BisNow had a nice photograph of a crew of official-looking business types sticking shovels in the ground out by Katy. I'm not sure if this was previously reported, but another 6-story building out west:

"Freeway Properties broke ground on Katy Ranch Offices Phase 1, the first mid-rise office property built west of the Grand Parkway in Katy. Above, LSI’s Robert O’Connell and Glen Taylor, TAS Engineering’s Eddie Sanders, LSI’s Jason Snell and Kerry LaGrone, Freeway’s Mike Baker, Moody Rambin’s Griff Jaggard and Kurt Kistler, Katy EDC’s Lance LaCour, and Moody Rambin’s Bob Cromwell celebrate the groundbreaking. Katy Ranch Offices Phase 1 is a six-story, 151k SF facility just off the eastbound exit ramp in Katy Ranch. It will deliver in Q1 ’15 and is applying for LEED Gold. Griff and Kurt are leasing the property, Powers Brown is the architect, LSI is GC, and TAS is handling MEP."

http://www.credgroup.com/projects_us.html

The site for the proposed Chinatown hotel is located within a 15-acre mixed-used KP Plaza development at the southeast quadrant of Beechnut Street and Beltway 8. Other probable uses within the development include restaurants, retail and residential. The hotel is located one exit from the heart of the Chinatown District and is also near the Westchase District, and international District. The picture below shows the current rendering of the development.

The project includes an upscale hotel about 250 rooms, and 120 high-rise residential units, and 35,000 square feet of retail space with a pad site for a premier restaurant. CRED group acquired the land since early 21st century, and the land, which is made up by two parcels, has a total aggregated size of 13.8 acres. A detention pond serves the site has been built and licensed by City of Houston.

Slightly off-beat topic: branding. Houston is looking to boost its brand identification with out-of towners who might be looking to move in, and while everything else they've tried has been kind of lame, this looks like it might just be the ticket.

This is probably the most shocking news of the year for me as far as development goes. I understand the money and impact Chinatown has but, everything in that area that has been built is mostly cheap looking shopping centers. That rendering looks NICE but anything upscale mentioned in the same sentence as Chinatown? We're talking about one street light away from Wilcerst, Spice Lane, Forum park, Club Creek. I love the renderings but definitely shocked to see something so upscale for that area.

I just read a Bloomberg piece on the number of millionaires from China looking to establish roots in America. KP Plaza is listed as another EB-5 opportunity: you can come to America, if you plunk down a million dollars...

From the CREDgroup website:

"EB-5

Our EB-5 Dream of Texas Regional Center Immigrant investment program is in fact the fastest, most simple and least expensive way to make a smart investment while acquiring a non-restrictive, Green Card and future U.S. citizenship for both the investor and his or her entire immediate family. There are two types of EB-5 investment opportunities:

· General. The minimum qualifying investment in the United States is $1 million.

· Targeted Employment Area (High Unemployment or Rural Area). The minimum qualifying investment either within a high-unemployment area or rural area in the United States is $500,000.

A $500,000 or $1,000,000 investment into a federally approved Regional Center and only $500,000 provided the investment is made in a designated Targeted Employment Area or rural area, and that it provides complete turnkey management of all business investments, daily management and full accountability for meeting the required job creations. This is the most popular choice for immigrant investors.

A targeted employment area is an area that, at the time of investment, is a rural area or an area experiencing unemployment of at least 150 percent of the national average rate.

A rural area is any area outside a metropolitan statistical area (as designated by the Office of Management and Budget) or outside the boundary of any city or town having a population of 20,000 or more according to the decennial census."

New Debakey High School for Health Professions: Going up in the TMC

96914604

Video highlights how design is shaping up for new DeBakey High School

Renderings of the new DeBakey High School for Health Professions are featured in a new HISD video that highlights the planning and design of the campus.

The new facility’s transparent and collaborative design will provide students a 21st century academic experience in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. The school will be located in the medical center to better engage students in a medicine and research facility environment and provide them easy access to these resources.

“Emerging in the Texas Medical Center is going to create a completely new learning environment for the students,” said Nancy Moreno of the Baylor College of Medicine. “They’re going to experience the medical center on a day-to-day basis, not only in their rotations.”

Through regular Project Advisory Team meetings as well as design charrettes and community meetings, the school’s staff and community supporters have helped shaped the new facility design by working one on one with architects and HISD facility planners and designers.

“We want this to be their building,” said HISD General Manager of Facilities Design Dan Bankhead. “DeBakey has a very special and successful program. It’s important that we build a building that’s going to address those special needs they have and reflect the spirit, success and achievements this program has already accomplished.”

Toxteth,

No, this is different. Here is the link to the map showing Spring Branch Honda. The property which I mentioned is just on the other side (west) of Wisterwood Ln. There is also an ICI Construction sign at this property, but nothing yet on their website either.

Map of Spring Branch Honda (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Spring+Branch+Honda,+Katy+Freeway,+Houston,+TX&hl=en&sll=29.817178,-95.401291&sspn=1.04969,1.234589&oq=honda+&t=h&z=17)

In the Google aerial view of that link, you can see that just north of this new property is a new Progressive Insurance Auto Center (or All-state...dont remember) which is now pretty close to completion.

HBJ has more on the Blackhaw project, which is going to be a highrise, apparently. Still no drawings.

A previously announced hospital project, CHI St. Luke's, breaks ground in Springwoods. First render is up on HBJ. Seven floors.

Hm, first residential high-rise for the energy corridor.

It's rather vertical for a high school. I thought highrise high schools only occurred in New York City. HSPVA also appears to be multiple floors.

Nope, we have a new 11 story one here that took over a former IBM campus. ;)

Holy cow why didn't I go there?! That is honestly the most amazing/beautiful campus I've ever seen! Why is it so over the top?

EDIT: I did my research and it's a refurbished IBM office building. Still awesome.

DanielG425, it's over the top because it's in Buckhead. It is beautiful, and it's on a gorgeous site on a bluff over the Chattahoochee River in the midst of probably the wealthiest neighborhood between D.C. & Texas.

The district takes in the entire Northside of the City though, so it's not just for rich kids. ;)

Not bad for a private school. St. John's simply spread out.

Judging from the sketch, this campus was designed by the same architect who designed Hogwarts.

New project off of Barker Cypress. Another 4-story wrap, this one has 382 units. Not sure if it's the project classic2eb was referring to...

No, this is a different project!

I included that link to the location I am referring to in my last post. I will try to get a picture of the construction this weekend.

While we're at it, I'm not sure this rendering of the new Texas Children's Hospital in the Woodlands was ever posted. They started work back in January, and now they're adding a "bubble-boy" clinic.

What I like most about the Houston development thread is that there aren't 60 to 70 posts following every proposal or update with people debating whether they think it will happen or not like some of the other city development threads on SSP.
