North Montrose and the Heights are blowing up with apartments near the bayous, which coincidentally have added a lot of new hiking and biking infrastructure along with flood control.
I really like the black brick on the Montrose Collective, that's going to be really sleek.

Great shot. That part of northern montrose is really blowing up along Buffalo Bayou/ W Dallas St.
Great picture Brijonmang. That’s a nice angle if you want to show someone how nice individual buildings in the downtown skyline are. You can go from left to right and focus on each individual building and it’s style and that drive down Allen Parkway headed towards downtown is the perfect drive to show the uniqueness of each of those buildings too. It makes each building standout but doesn’t do as much for the downtown skyline as a collective whole. I don’t like it as an overall skyline view because it gives people the impression that Downtown Houston’s skyline has a lot of gaps and is spaced out between buildings.
I like the Downtown Houston skyline view from the south, from UH. Houston looks like the beast that it should rightfully be recognized as being, no major gaps either, and plenty of density. And great fill in between the two supertalls too.

Any entry into town from the south or southwest have to be my favorite views. Since 90/Main Street was rebuilt, I've used it more and I think it's just past the intersection with South Post Oak where it's elevated for a bit and the skylines wrap around the horizon somewhat so you get Uptown, Greenway/ Upper Kirby, TMC/Museum District & behind them Downtown. I recall going on field trips in the 90s on that route and even then it was pretty neat to see.
Runner up might be the approach from the Southwest Freeway - maybe starting around Sugar Land or Stafford where Westchase shows up and you start moving past it toward Uptown where that skyline completely dominates, while Greenway and Downtown start getting closer and closer.
Then again, thanks to development, you can actually see the Williams Tower from ROSENBERG now on the elevated portion of 59. That made me do a double take on my last visit in December. Hadn't tried to see if I could see any of the other towers.

"..because it gives people the impression that Downtown Houston’s skyline has a lot of gaps and is spaced out between buildings..."
I thought I remember see a photo last year that showed downtown had lots of surface parking spaces? From what I have been hearing, it seems like Houston does need more residential downtown, although I see they are building one or two residential towers. Hope the residential densification in some of the other areas, like Montrose, comes to downtown. How many people live downtown and is there a grocery store now?

Phoenicia is a grocery store that’s been there for over a decade now. It’s next to Discovery Green Park. About 8,000 people live in Downtown now, nearly quadruple how many were there in 2010. Yes, there are lots of surface lots downtown but they are primarily towards the south and east. All the skyscrapers are mainly concentrated in the skyline district part of downtown, where it is structurally very dense and there are barely any lots.

Also to be fair, within a mile of downtown accessible via high frequency all day all week transit you have Randalls, Whole Foods, Fiesta, Kroger, Sprouts, a Target, even a Super Walmart. Houston has a lot of retail and things you need in the general core of the city, just not in the downtown proper. Except for that Phoenicia of course.
I think an Aldi's would be a nice fit downtown though. I'm surprised you don't see more of those in an urban setting. My money would be on an H-E-B though because they have urban style stores (ground floor retail space below other things, with garage parking) around the city already.

From what I have been hearing, it seems like Houston does need more residential downtown, although I see they are building one or two residential towers. Hope the residential densification in some of the other areas, like Montrose, comes to downtown. How many people live downtown and is there a grocery store now?
Off the top of my head I can think of at least 9 existing high rise residential buildings with at least another 2 (42 and 46 stories) residential buildings under construction. There are also more and more mid rise residential buildings being built or already finished Downtown. The numbers I've seen are from 10K to as many as 15K residents in Downtown. https://www.point2homes.com/US/Neighborhood/TX/Houston/Downtown-Houston-Demographics.html
This is the same area in the photo above seen from a different direction in 2018. There are already at least two completed high rise residential buildings not yet in this view.

I think it depends on the definition of downtown. The same website that lists Houston's DT pop as 15K, lists Dallas's as 11K, Chicago's as 22K, and San Antonio's as 17K (which makes me wonder what they consider downtown).

There isn't a definitive definition of what is "downtown" when comparing cities. It's almost like comparing City proper populations instead of Metro population when ranking cities by population.

I think of San Antonio’s downtown as being bound on the east by I-37, on the west by I-10, on the north by I-35, and on the south by César Chavez Blvd. If they’re including South Town and King William and everything down to I-10 before it turns north then I can see where their population number comes from. I personally wouldn’t include those areas as Downtown.

As for Houston not having a ton of residential high rises downtown. Meh. Houston is an odd case since there are high rises all over the city. For whatever it lacks with residential high rises in downtown, there are a ton of them all over the city. It's somewhat easier to plop a residential high rise into a neighborhood in Houston somewhere than it is to do it in downtown. All I mean by that is you can build tall somewhere outside of downtown and still be fairly car oriented and not much different than any other apartment complex. But to build one in downtown where it's expected to be close to things people want that they can walk to because it is in downtown, that can be more difficult to achieve. You have to be able to acquire lots to build on and they have to be close enough to the core of the activity in downtown to be walkable. Building residential in downtown is a lot more organic than it is outside of it. It's something that takes a long time to cultivate. You can't just plop a high rise into downtown and expect it to work right away. Sure, it'll add density, but if it's not close enough to the activity in downtown people likely won't opt to walk.

Thanks. Someone recently posted this one below, and I've been looking at it a bit. I never know exactly what some cities consider to be their downtown. Not all of them even call it downtown, and sometimes there are multiple neighborhoods within it that carry their own different names. And so, unless you live there it can be difficult to figure out what they consider to be downtown.

That one will be one that I'm interested to see develop as East River expands.
One perspective that I never see (but would love to) is Uptown from the north - like if you're coming from 290 and getting onto the West Loop from that flyover. Residential towers at the fore, Williams at the back but still a primary feature with a ton of new towers that have emerged in the past number of years. Also, there's enough development on the other side of the Loop now that it halfway looks like it's merging with the Greenway & Upper Kirby skylines.

I think Montrose Collective is my favorite development since that corner has been so underdeveloped for the location. It's an interesting mix of retail, office, and a Houston library expansion. There have been two recent high rises but those a few blocks away and not on the main intersection of Westheimer and Montrose. This development along, with the Krogers and Half Price shopping center (both razed now I believe) will really make this a better area. Also the scale is really appropriate for the neighborhood.

At first I thought this development seemed to be a little "too good to be true" and was suspicious of it, because you know with COVID for a while I bought into the doom and gloom that cities would suffer. But things are coming back and I can definitely see this filling up.
Agreed on the half price and kroger, hopefully they maximize the density on those blocks. At a minimum, something as big as the Pearl Rosemont mid-rise tower going up.

In the second photo, what areas are the cluster of buildings to the near left, the near right and the very far right?

Not sure exactly what you are referring to. There are two major employment centers in the picture, Greenway Plaza and Uptown/Galleria. Uptown is the major linear set of buildings in the background, including the very tall blue tower. Greenway Plaza is the cluster of buildings in the middle of the background.
The rest are small clusters of highrises, in Montrose and Upper Kirby. The bayou had a major upgrade that has spawned a lot of development along it.

Very far right (in distance) is Memorial City/City Centre/Energy Corridor, right?

Correct. I didn't scroll far enough.
Uptown and Energy Corridor are pretty linear and along a major highway.

I'm wondering if what DCReid refers to as "near right" is American General Center.

Downtown Apartment/Occupancy numbers from 4/21 per TheSirDingle @ HAIF (https://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/39149-downtown-apartment-market/page/5/#comments)
Residential Market
Occupancy Rate: 84.1%
Note: This is up dramatically from the previous quarter low of 82.2%, I'm projecting it be up to 87% by the end of summer.
Residential Units: 6,279 units
Under Construction: 1,317 units
Note: This includes The Brava (373 units), Trammell Crow (309 units), Sovereign (229 units), Fairfield (286 units), and Mckee City Living (120 units). A pretty significant lineup to look forward to.
Planned: 275 units
Note: don't know what this one is, but I assume it's a low ball considering the updates going around the forum.
Looks like everything should be going back to normal, I'm expecting foot traffic and in-office occupancy to be back to, or close to normal later this year.

I definitely see it in comparing skyline pics from a few years back. I'm sure the boom will continue.

I wonder if they would replace them with purely ornamental spires. Otherwise, it will substantially alter the aesthetic of the O’Quinn Medical Tower which was meant to like a pair of hypodermic needles

That would be awful. Such an iconic building and spires. My Dad always used it as a landmark when telling people how to get somewhere near the building ("just past the building with the needles on top").

Or St. Luke's Medical Tower as it was first known. I've decided building name changes are meant to reveal how long someone has been somewhere and how old they are. And when you can no longer keep up it means you're really old. I can't keep up any longer.

I know. That sucks. The first time I visited Houston, it was one of the buildings I was looking forward to seeing. It's also really cool looking at night all it up and the white beacons up there. It totally sucks that they'd do that.

My favorite view ever of it was in a Southwest Airlines jet flying over it at night. Got to see Transco, the Hypodermic Needles and Downtown all on the way to Hobby.

I worked in the TMC for years so I was up on all the changes going on around there and the people buildings were named after...

The original plan was for two more towers just like the existing one. As much as I've always admired the building, three would have been overkill.
