A question about the exterior steel columns. It looks like there are 4 major vertical columns on most sides of the tower. The steel of those columns doesn't look substantial enough. They also don't look like the massive columns in the renderings.

Will these columns be encased in concrete? It's the only thing I can think of. If so, are they encased all the way up or just a few floors? Please & thanks...i'd really like to know.

This may not be the most "glamorous" of the WTC towers, but other than the Freedom Tower, it's the tallest tower to roof being built in the city since the Twin Towers were built in the early 70's.

I'm with ya there! This is a great looking tower which like Towers 1 and 7 will be a simple design executed brilliantly!

So the base will be the shopping area?

JSsocal

Yes, the eastern half of the building at least. The Western side, (facing the memorial), will be the actual lobby for tenants.

CHAPINM1
Jan 8, 2010, 7:05 AM
The only two things I'd like to see changed about Tower 4 would be the design of the east lobby (getting rid of that V cross beam), and creating an additional setback about 1/3 of the way up identical to and to compliment the setback roughly 2/3 of the way up to keep things symmetrical and balanced. For some reason the only things that bothers me the design is having the setback located exactly where it is.

This tower seems to jump out at you more than the Freedom Tower, most likely because it's closer to the street currently, which allows for a closer view.

There were never any plans to build a "stump" in place of this tower. When I say this tower "jumps" out at you, that is to be taken literally.

Is the steel that has currently been erected a part of the core or the facade of the tower? Or both??

I guess both:yes:

BStyles
Jan 10, 2010, 12:32 AM
They've already put in the core steel for this tower. The steel that is currently going up now is the exterior steel. Unlike 1WTC's steel which has to be large and bulky in the base to withstand bombs and continue to support the building(the base is backlit so there isn't any space for concrete. It will look very cluttered) Tower 4's steel is small, and will be encased thickly in concrete because of it's major exposure to the streets, as NYguy just said. A great example of this is a 7WTC's base, which is also made entirely out of concrete for the same reason.

I should point out that it's currently the second tallest under consruction in the country as far as we know. Extell's 57th Street tower (somewhat under construction) is rumered to be around 1,083 ft in height instead of 953 ft, so that would bump this to number 3.

I hope it is blue in color like Building 7 which I have seen a few times in person and I love the facade of that building. I am pretty sure all the buildings glass/facades will match. It is possible that four will use a lighter blue glass than the others. Off topic question. What will the West Street Bridge connect to in the long run? It looks strange just connected to some temporary bridge and none of the plans for the future show how this structure will be incorporated with the new complex.

If you're talking about the one near the Freedom Tower, it's temporary. The underpass that will connect to the WFC is already under construction. The Liberty Street bridge was supposed to be temporary also. I've seen renderings of some replacements for that one.

4 WTC Facade Sample Erected in New Jersey

07-24-2009

In a modest lot in Orange, New Jersey, a section of 4 World Trade Center (4 WTC) has risen. It is a "curtain wall mock-up" of the future skyscraper's façade, commissioned by developer Silverstein Properties and erected by metal fabricator firm MetFab this spring. The mock-up stands 50 feet tall and 20 feet wide, and has given architect Fumihiko Maki and his design team a chance to view how the ultra-clear glass and steel function in the light of day.

The completed tower will be home to a 47-foot-tall lobby that faces the National 9/11 Memorial, enclosed by 20 large glass panels. The full tower, to reach 64 stories total (975 feet), will be wrapped in 10,000 glass panels and be built with 26,000 tons of structural steel. It is projected to open in 2012.

This is a "curtain wall mockup" of the office lobby of Tower 4, which will face Greenwich Street and the WTC Memorial Park. The architect - Fumihiko Maki - designed the lobby with "ultra clear" glass, in order be as open and transparent as possible,

The finished lobby will contain 20 of these large glass panels and building will contain 10,000 glass panels in total. Each glass panel is made of two laminated layers.

I just cant ever get over how hectic everything always seems at the construction site. I mean, how the hell do they keep that shit all straight? Do they break it down into sectors and have regional managers or something.

New vertical steel, new columns, new core steel; so much that the south crane can't handle it in it's position, so they're jumping it(jumping mechanism is visivle on second level).

There's a reason construction management is a specific concentration for civil engineering degrees.;)

Good to see this tower getting above grade. I know some people don't like this one, but IMO it'll be a very nice elegant tower. The glazing will be a big factor.

^ The Freedom Tower will have to climb faster so it won't be blocked from that angle.

How high will this building be by the early Fall of 2010? What is the schedule I should say?

NYguy

I don't recall Silverstein's schedule, but it should be at least a few floors up by then.

They put in a few more sections of steel. I can see the SW corner of the tower now, as seen through the renderings.

What a contrasting day to that last set of photos. I've mentioned before that this tower "jumps out" at you from the street, and its even more so as more steel rises. This will be a massive tower, even by New York standards.
