Well, there they go, caught in the act by NYCLuver, covering up those skewed X-columns on the north side. From the look of these shots, it seems I was right when I predicted that the skewed columns wouldn't be visible any longer after the glass was put on.

^Google translate came up with "Faceless Steel Block" which, since block=highrise, makes more sense given the context. But...I took Spanish in high school and college...so I'm not an expert here.

Oh, and the Germans have produced some real masterpieces lately, haven't they? I'm sick and tired of Europeans constanly thinking they somehow know better when it comes to good architecture. :yuck:

Europeans shouldn't be talking. They don't have any skyscraper right now that breaks the 1,000 foot mark unless if you count the London Shard which is still under construction, and it barely just makes it. If Europe wants to fight us then tell them to build a 2,000 footer. Otherwise Europeans are just a bunch of weaklings, and I am not counting the Eiffel Tower. To me that is just a steel lattice tower, and not an occupied skyscraper.

The German article has every right to criticize the architecture of 4WTC, Europeans for the most part build much nicer buildings then we do, its just they don't build too many highrises, (and when they do they are top notch nowadays). From an architectural standpoint 4 WTC is kind of a faceless building, and neither architecturally significant or for that matter interesting. I appreciate it for its minimalism, but I think another high profile architect like KPF, Richard Meier, or Renzo Piano might have come up with something better. But imagine if Morphosis, Jean Nouvel, or Rem Koolhaus had taken a crack at this building, that'd be something...

Bullcrap about European buildings. IAC HQs and Beekman are better than anything they have (recently, of course), and those are just by one guy within the last few years.

I like Four WTC. I want Nouvel for Tower 5.

The only area you might have a point on is transportation stations, because Europeans do spend more on that kind of thing. However modern European architecture in general sucks.

I agree with this. Just by typing that article makes them hypocritical.

However if that article was written by a person from China, then it will be OK. (If you don't already know, China has some nice glass skyscrapers in the recent decades).

Um... no? European Architecture is on average much better then American architecture. During my recent rip to Scandinavia I was blown away at how much nicer everything was. Turning Torso, in particular, was a stunning example of a high rise that truly innovated on the 500 foot rectangle. And guys, jeez. One person in Germany doesn't like 150 Greenwhich St., and suddenly you launch a tirade against Europe as a whole. A little xenophobic, wouldn't you think? People are entitled to their opinions. Get over it.

Sure China builds nice skyscrapers, but it only makes them look good. Most of them are barely occupied, and are just completed glass shells.

It doesn't, of course. I was just using it as an example. Though I did see a dozen other high-rises during my trip that have more character then 99% of the modern architecture in NY. Obviously, I can't compare anything to the pre-war high-rises, as Europe has none, but to say that Europe has bad modern architecture is a total lie.

Actually, that's not true. Due to my work, I've been inside many different high rises here in Shanghai. And most of them are jammed with occupants, 90% or more occupancy. You have to remember that with essentially zero office construction between 1949 and 1979, there was a vast unmet demand for office space that only started being met in the 1990s. It's true that the highest end properties have had slower uptake because the mass market is for lower end, cheaper space, but really dude, you cannot judge the China market by Western standards; this is an Asian country where the population density and scale of demand is of a completely different order.

Height does not equal beauty. Almost all of London's U/C highrises could be landmarks if they were built in any other city in North America. Every other city has buildings under construction that are, though not tall, stunning in their own rights.

I think this tower illustrates some of the unfortunate but necessary trends in US skyscraper design. While I love the height, the wide width and simplicity of the facade make it look like a much shorter tower. IV WTC is taller than City Group, but it really dose not look it because it is so dang wide. 15 Penn and 1 Manhattan West will both suffer from the same issues, although they have an advantage of being taller and in more remote locations, so they will soar a bit more. Overall I give IV WTC a B-.

It's actually already visible on the Manhattan Bridge. When the train is crossing the bridge you can see the cranes, and some of the floors for 4 WTC.

Because thats there official address.

The city lists it under the vanity address of 4 World Trade Center for all of its records. That may change once there's tenants, but right now that's the "official" address under which all city surveys and complaints are issued under. If it wasn't PA land, and the jurisdictional conflict that entails, you'd have building permits listed there as well. Then again, if it wasn't PA land, they might have petitioned for a Greenwich address already.

If we want to meet half-way on this, Silverstein Properties uses "4 World Trade Center at 150 Greenwich Street" at several points.

not quite there yet....i wonder how much longer i have to wait to see the tower from my terrace....i can see the the top of the cranes almost as high as the look out of the Woolworth building! :) perhaps 2 months?

if we could only vanish that brutalist Jacob K. Javits Federal Office Building out of the way!!!

The glass for 4WTC looks a lot darker and more reflective than 1WTC's. Not sure if that's the case, or if it's just the appearance from certain angles.

Any talk of US Customs making a return to the site? Tower four seems like it would be a good fit for them along with the PA.

US Customs had, and still needs, a very customized (no pun intended) space. Evidence lockers, secure loading areas, extra security beyond even what is specified in these new buildings. They weren't just an office tenant. 6 World Trade Center was specifically designed with them in mind. 4WTC/150 Greenwich is not.

Any idea why they had no interest in returning? I’m sure if they made the inquiry when the time was right, the logistics of the space could’ve been worked out.

All federal space will be in Tower 1. There was never any discussion of substantial leases in any of the other buildings, as far as I'm aware. Below grade, they'd be hard pressed to cram in even more infrastructure. It's a tight fit as-is. Could they have done it? Yes, but it would have required input from pretty much the beginning, and you would not get a friendlier streetscape if they had done so.

Well, i mean, right now ^^^, to me it looks awkward that 4WTC is just on its own right now, with that huge gap in between 1 WTC and it... It'll look better once topped off and surrounded by the other 2 towers :)

Render times have crept up to an hour now that I've put in the cloud layer, so until I get a new PC, I'm not going to up the sampling rate to subdue those. They're not really artifacts, so much as the overexposed diffuse reflection of the metal material catching the sun. A higher sample rate will blend those with the glass, leaving the sheen effect, but it will be less sharp and pixel-y.

Count the number of windows and multiply by 5. That will get you the answer in feet, +/- 3 inches.

You could use the ruler tool in Google Earth. I've used it multiple times and I have to say that it is pretty accurate for the most part. It works better when 3D buildings is off FYI.

Granted you can only measure the lower portion at this point, as GE's NYC imagery is from June.
