Crane Breaks Windows on WTC Tower, Memorial Temporarily Closed

A crane lifting a beam struck and broke windows at 4 World Trade Center around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.

No one was injured, but the Sept. 11 memorial was temporarily closed as a precaution due to falling glass.

The crane was lifting a beam when it struck the 72-story tower from around its 45th to 46th floors, Buildings Department officials said.

On Monday, the final beam of 4 World Trade was lifted into place in a solemn ceremony that officials described as a symbol of New York's resilience.

Apparently some one was hurt

MYFOXNY.COM -

A crane lifting a beam struck several floors at 4 World Trade causing windows to shatter, said FDNY officials.

Pedestrians below were sent running for cover late Wednesday morning.

Glass and debris rained down on the area near the 9/11 memorial park. No injuries were reported.

The 9/11 Memorial posted a message on its website apologizing for the closure. It suggested that people who were scheduled to visit on Wednesday reschedule their visit.

The final steel beam at 4 World Trade Center was raised earlier this week.

On Tuesday, a worker was seriously hurt at the WTC construction site when he was impaled on some rebar, said FDNY officials.

The 37-year-old man fell about four to five feet.

The worker suffered a puncture wound on the left side of his torso by the two inch thick rebar.

Medics brought the worker to Bellevue Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition.

This site will always be cursed with bad luck.

That's a nice positive outlook

It's not like other construction sites aren't without their share of accidents, including deaths of construction workers. Hopefully the worker who fell and got that puncture wound will be okay. But these accidents don't indicate a permanent curse of bad luck on this whole site...

Two Days of Trouble Follow a Milestone at 4 World Trade Center

June 27, 2012

The streets and sidewalks of Lower Manhattan were snarled on Wednesday afternoon — that is, even more snarled than usual — after the police cordoned off a large area around 4 World Trade Center in response to a construction accident at the site.

It was the second accident in a week that had begun cheerfully with a topping-out ceremony marking the installation of the uppermost steel beam in the 977-foot skyscraper at Liberty and Church Streets.

On Tuesday, a 37-year-old worker was badly injured when he fell about six feet onto a steel reinforcing bar, or rebar. John P. Gallagher, a first vice president of the Tishman Construction Corporation, which is building the tower, said the worker, whom he did not identify, was in stable condition, with two broken ribs and a bruised liver. He is expected to be able to leave Bellevue Hospital Center in two or three days.

On Wednesday, the Fire Department said, a crane was lifting a beam — Mr. Gallagher described it as a 53-foot, 24-ton steel truss — when the weight of the load shifted and the beam crashed into windows on the 46th floor. The truss shattered two panes, each 5 feet wide and 13-and-a-half feet high, Mr. Gallagher said. The tempered glass behaved as it is supposed to: breaking largely within the frames, held together by laminated interior layers and not throwing off big, dangerous shards, he added. The Fire Department said no one was injured.

Nonetheless, pieces of glass did fall to Liberty Street.

“Fortunately, the street was closed at the time, and the Liberty Street sidewalk is protected by a construction shed,” Mr. Gallagher said.

:previous: I agree 100% with CarlosV (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/member.php?u=3890), accidents happen on construction sites all the time -- it's no big deal.

When your surrounded by construction 24/7 in the biggest city in the nation, you'd expect things to happen.

That's why hard hats are common.

It's amazing to think that if 1WTC weren't there, it would dominate the Lower Manhattan skyline. This whole complex is going to be absolutely massive when it's complete, considering what's here is only half of it.

The loop is pretty awesome though!

Being from Staten Island, the WTC is going to look even better alongside the rest of downtown. From my vantage point, I will have the more dense and slightly shorter Eastern portion, with One Chase Manhattan and the two 30's peaks at the top. With the WTC complex, the Western portion will look taller and more spread out (at least in terms of downtown). It was so empty for so long.

^ I think Shanghai with the BIG 3 (Jin Mao, SWFC and Shanghai Tower) is a serious contender. Those towers are beautiful and damn tall.

On topic: If you take a look at the cam (and the pic below) you can see the last steel for the parapet... this one is topped out guys!! :notacrook:

Visited the memorial today and I have to say, 4 WTC is pretty gorgeous for such a (relatively) simple slab of a building. Expensive glass really does make a difference.

He was probably a fan of my city's tallest, and decided he wanted to do something similar in NY, only bigger/taller. In the 2nd pic of post 2863 the lower wall looks very much like the JHT.

Yeah, I love Boston's John Hancock Tower. It too has the dignity and class of minimalist architecture.

Asians are known for designing simple yet elegant things. If you look at what I.M. Pei or what any other Asian architect designed you can actually see that.

I think the best thing about this building will be the curtain wall when completed. It's sheer size makes that huge wall seem more elegant than just a glass box. Plus the quality of the glass is amazing!

When all the glass is up, will it be officially T/O then ? I see the thread is still here.

^ Yes, the parapet glass goes a bit higher than the last steel. Also, if a tower is T/O it still remains here until completion.

Do any of you remember when the renderings for this building were announced, the time in which almost all the people hated it and trashed it all over the 4WTC thread?

Now it's over 5 years later and things are wrapping up to be awe-inspiring.A true landmark for America.

Back then, I was a part of the group that pushed for the rebuilding of the twin towers.

The last time I was with that group was on July 4th and was tasked with handing out flyers to the public to support the rebuilding of the twin towers.

I wound up throwing the flyers in the trash when I realized that I was wasting my time.

I don't mind the new design.
In fact, this design replaces two towers with four where each tower has it's own personality.

Don't like my opinion?
Good! I am tired of others deciding for me to hate it.
It's not the Fraud 'em tower. It's 1 WTC.
This is the "new" New York!
