How exactly is the glass on 4 WTC different from the glass on 1 WTC?

This building will be just as towering as the others, just not as tall.

So, does anyone have any info on when the second crane will be re-installed? Apparrently they need it to raise the larger pieces of the cocoon (in conjunction with the existing crane?)

How exactly is the glass on 4 WTC different from the glass on 1 WTC?

Basically it has high levels of iron (as opposed to the extremely low iron glass being used at 1WTC) which gives the tower a very reflective surface. There's a variety of dimensions of the total panels but the standard ones are 2 inches taller than the ones at One, being 13'-6".

NYguy

^ Yeah, it's one of the most reflective in Manhattan.

This was an older rendering? This one doesn't have the setback, so I'm presuming it is.

Only two sides have the setback - the north and west. On the south and east, there is no setback, except the setback at the base on the east (Church St.) side.

Crane accident could stall completion of Four W.T.C.

March 21, 2012
BY ALINE REYNOLDS

The topping out of Four W.T.C. has been postponed by at least two months due to the loss of a crane that in mid-February dropped a pile of steel beams and somehow left construction workers and passersby unscathed.

“We have a little impact right now,” said Mike Goldberg, an executive at Tishman Construction, the firm charged with the build-out of Four W.T.C., at Community Board 1’s World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee last Monday, March 12. “We were looking at early May, [but] it’s probably going to be two months after that at this point.”

A source familiar with the construction of Four W.T.C. reported that the incident, which leaves the tower with only one crane at its disposal, has caused construction delays that could drag on for even more than two months, depending on how long it takes to get a second crane atop the building to replace the faulty crane. This could conceivably lead to the stalling of the building’s opening, which is expected to take between one-and-a-half to two years once the tower is fully built out, according to the source.

^The official height of 1WTC is 1776 feet, the extra 11 or so feet is from the lightning rod which I'm sure is not officially counted.

and, just curious, where does the 300+ feet of sea level come from? NY is at sea level, The Hudson river is sea level and Greenwich street is no more than 10 or so feet above it.

I've seen various places say that NYC (Manhattan) is officially 33ft above sea level, but really it depends where you are. And the Hudson River can't be at sea level or it wouldn't flow towards the bay. Though 300 ft does seem like a lot.

The 300' difference is because this is a PA project, and the PA uses a reference point that is 300' below sealevel so they don't have to use negative numbers for the depths of the subways.

Apr 2, 2012, 1:10 PM
I suggested earlier that T4 might top out before T1 and this was pooh-poohed on the grounds that the crane accident slowed down T4. But I mean, come on people - there have been so many delays with T1; look at the rate T4 is going; the top floors of T4 are a much simpler and smaller floor plan than the top floors of T1; and there are only what, 6-8 floors left? And it's not even clear whether the crane lifting capacity is the limiting factor in the speed of construction, it's quite possible that assembly work could be the limiting factor.

I think it's gonna be close, that's all I'm saying.

NewYorker2009
Apr 2, 2012, 2:04 PM
:previous: I would say both Towers 1 & 4 are very close to topping out around the same time. Tower 4 has like 5 or 6 floors left plus the parapet and Tower 1 has a few floors left too. I don't think it matters at this point which one tops out first just as long as they are both close to the finish line. Even when Tower One tops out they still have to add the spire/antenna and then it will be officially topped out.

It's interesting how it almost looks like one of the Time Warner towers from the southern side.

Do you even know what the Time Warner Center is..? Just saying, I live in Miami too and I only learn through this forum about the city, since not many foreigners like us Floridians know too much about it. By the way, that's really stupid to put your address up, kinda snobby too.

You mad bro?

I would say that most people who are interested enough in skyscrapers and architecture would know about the Time Warner Center, considering it was one of the bigger projects of the last decade.

He did not put his address up, just how high he lives. Do I sense jealousy?

^^ Awesome Otie. So 4WTC is currently the 9th tallest buildings in the city (868'). It has surpassed the TWT (861'). Next step: Beekman Tower (876').

The tower looks really tall now. :)

Well well well. We have gotten way of topic here. Let us return, for a moment to Tower 4.

First, I do not see this cam linked to very frequently...

Second, the glass on the lobby is shockingly clear. I know Silverstein, Maki, and Co said it would be, but it's really hard to believe until you see it...
