I was going to say the same thing. Many people hated the building in the beginning. I loved it all the way :notacrook:

This tower is proof that simplicity can equal beauty. I've been a fan since I saw the renderings way back when, and I'm glad it turned out as striking as I knew it would.

Back in the early to mid 2000's the architectural world was in thrall to the loud and unorthodox architecture of Gehrys and Liebeskinds, so anything merely modern and polished was rejected by tastemakers and pretenders. But excellence and elegance are in a separate world from trendiness, and if 4WTC is any indication, it endures.

Its the quality of the glass cladding. I hated this building because it seemed another plain boxy building. I love the way its reflective glass picks up the light of the sky and surrounding buildings!

It's not so bad. When I visited NYC once (before I cared about skyscrapers) I actually admired it, something I hadn't really done to mid century office towers. It looks strong and cool. 1LP and the ESB were the only ones I truly remembered vividly from that trip. Once it's painted a deep black it will look far better!

One Liberty Plaza is my least favorite building in NYC. They tore down the historic and beautiful Singer building and replaced it with a large overbearing ugly box!!! I hate it!

I loveee this building. This building is straight up TALL. The latest pictures really do give a sense of the scale. Only people in NYC, Chicago, Toronto, Houston, Dallas, Seattle and Los Angeles can claim that they live amongst a manmade vertical wall so tall. I wish my old stomping grounds could claim the same, but vertical walls in Atlanta stop short of ~760 ft and typically below 700 ft. for even the tallest.

There are still setbacks before 921 feet, it is about the same height straight up as comcast center in philly.

As far as 4WTC goes, only the two in Houston and 4 in Chicago have a straight wall so high outside of NYC, for now at least.

^^In my opinion, it's the second most underrated building in NY, behind 1LP. The limestone facade is just dirty, I think. I think a scrub will make it look much better.
I don't know why people keep saying it has no windows?? It's just one vertical bar that does not have them.

The Beaver House and the Home Insurance Plaza Are far more repulsive for me.

This building personally is incredibly boring and lifeless, just a big hunk of soulless glass. It doesnt even look tall, it looks short and stocky.

This is the best glass on a building I've ever seen! What I thought to be the most boring design in the complex turned out to be one of the most original. Good job Maki!!!

Back when they were planning the new WTC, everyone was drinking Liebeskind, Gehry, etc. starchitect Kool-Aid. No design was novel, saccharine, or flashy enough. And of course 4WTC was trashed for its blandness or lack of ambition.

This tower is a tall, cold and clean drink of pure water. Just looking at it is refreshing.

You must be either trolling or you haven't seen this building in person. It's not a box. It's a triangle sitting on top of a parallelogram, and second of all it's tall. The glass is spectacular up close in person and so is the height. Not just that but it blocks the more atrocious One Liberty Plaza in the back. So I don't know what you are talking about.

Not trying to be rude but you really need to double check what defines a box cause this building sure doesn't look like one. I'm not gonna get into our difference of opinions as it relates to the building cause everyone is entitled to their own, but let's be correct here, this building is no box!!!

He's a classicist. Everything that doesn't have tacked up ornament is a box to them.

Completely agree. There's beauty in its simplicity and subtlety. In some images it's almost like it's not there.

I got to see this IRL a couple of weeks ago and the building is far better in person than in photos. The building just exudes quality, the glass and fit and finish are top notch. A class above.

I was thinking a deck would have been nice up there, but the north view at least will be cut off by towers 2 and 3.

That's a gross misconception. Dallas, TX is warmer year round than NYC because is obviously further south, but in the summer, NYC can be just as hot, if not hotter, than Dallas. Today for example, NYC is at 96 degrees, while Dallas is at 88 degrees. On top of that, Dallas tends to be arid, while NYC is almost always humid, making the heat even more unbearable.

Back on topic. I'm in love with the glass on the this building. :slob:

I'm not sure if you've ever been to Dallas, but you seem to be the one with the gross misconception. I have family in Dallas, and used to work construction there.

Dallas regularly has days that are 100+ degrees in the summer. The air certainly isn't "arid", it is extremely humid in fact. Most days are at or near 100% humidity.
