The only problem with this tower is it is like a fat blimp.

The girth of 4WTC compared to its height is out of proportion to what many skyscraper geeks prefer: That being, tall, slender towers, whose narrowness exaggerates their height.

However, I wouldn't say that was its only problem.

I find the awkward asymmetrical setback near the top inappropriate and architecturally irrelevant to the design sensibilities of the rest of the tower.

I don't need to be reminded that the setback is meant to echo and continue the look of step-down and setbacks from towers 3 and 2, next door. However, they are not going to be built for some time and a building should stand on its own architectural merits and not rely on another building nearby to make sense.

The trapezoidal upper section is abrupt, out of proportion, and is not thematically tied into the tower in any other way than it's there to defer to Tower 3 next door. That's bad architecture in my books.

Good points: The engineering is fantastic. The glazing is top-notch.

In my opinion, the asymmetrical nature and setbacks are crucial to it's relationship and as a result of it's proximity with WTC3. Without these features it would totally not work in that site and would make it feel very congested (as well as completely block all south views for the WTC3 tenants). Additionally, it "softens the edges" of the entire WTC site and going north on Greeenwich up onto the site, it feels like it ushers you into the area as apposed to abruptly entering the space.

That's just my opinion.

Interesting... I think the fact that the four elevations are different from each other is what makes this building interesting. Looking at each elevation in flat 2 dimensions I can see where you say that they don't work with each other but when you put it into a real world three dimension it's what makes it more dynamic.

And I think that there is no way in the manner in which this entire complex was planned and is being executed that the buildings should not be designed to work with each other and have one influence the other's design.

Could it have been better?... I can agree with you there... Is it bad design? I think that is going too far.

(Reuters) - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey hopes to resolve a spat with Fidelity over the seniority of bondholders so that $1.3 billion of Liberty bonds can be sold by late September, Chris Ward, the authority's executive director, told Reuters on Thursday.

The rebuilding of the World Trade Center complex, dogged by delays and cost overruns, also faces an engineering challenge -- whether the underground garage can be finished six months early to avoid delaying work on the interiors of some towers.

The above-ground memorial with its plaza and one working waterfall were finished first -- in time for the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks -- so all of the fixtures, lighting, and desks for some of the new skyscrapers will have to be trucked in through the garage, Ward said.

The Authority hit on a novel approach to get the memorial for the nearly 3,000 who died in the attacks ready two years earlier than expected -- in time for the 10th anniversary.

"People don't know how close we were to losing this project three years ago," said Ward. Federal officials were "enormously frustrated with the delays," he said.

His agency owns the site, which curbs Mayor Michael Bloomberg's influence. But the mayor insisted the memorial had to be finished first and warned that the delays might mean the site was still just a hole in the ground on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy.

AN "UPSIDE DOWN" SUCCESS

One August night three years ago, Ward said he and his team solved the problem by flipping the normal order of construction work, building from the top down instead of starting on the bottom on Manhattan bedrock, and then building up.

"We turned it upside down so we could deliver this (the memorial) on the 10th anniversary," he said, "We built the ceiling of the PATH train station and the floor of the memorial all at once."

But the Liberty bond financing for World Trade Center Tower 4 still has to be finalized.

"We think Fidelity misunderstood the fundamental structure and are fully prepared to adjust to their potential concerns," Ward said.

The Liberty bonds will help pay for Tower 4, one of the three on-site skyscrapers that developer Larry Silverstein is building.

"Hopefully, all the financing for Tower 4 will be in place by October at the latest," Ward said.

A spokeswoman for Fidelity, the Boston-based mutual fund giant, declined comment.

I have a question.

Which will be the first trapezoid shaped floor? I.e. at what level exactly will the building transition from a parallelogram to a trapezoid-shaped floor plan?

It's hard to tell from the renderings; with the parallax some of them look like that transition point will be much lower than One Liberty Plaza, whereas in some other images, it looks like that point will be at equal height to OLP, or even taller.

And also, when can we expect this transition to occur? October?

I believe it's the 56th floor (or within a floor or two either direction). This floor is likely to happen before November 1.

Thanks for that STR. So, going by STR's infographic, the trapezoid section starts at approximately 715 feet, whereas One Liberty Plaza tops out around 750. So the transition point will indeed be lower, but not that much lower; a pretty significant amount of parallelogram floor construction is still left. I'm thinking November for the transition going by the number of floors left.

I should have been more clear. I meant the reflective facets in the "notch" of 4 WTC in particular. This design concept was executed on a larger scale on Bank of China Tower than on 4 WTC. I realize that the buildings are nearly the same height.

Excellent point: people underestimate the vast scale of the New WTC, and especially of 4 WTC because, I suppose, they think that "shortest" means small. And I wouldn't be surprised if 4 WTC is wider than the Bank of China, so that in terms of square footage the glazed facade of 4 WTC actually exceeds that of BoC.

Actually, that particular shot will probably look the same except that T4 will be topped out and cladded. Even if T2 and T3 are under construction by then without further economic delays, they will be blocked by T4 until they are nearly complete, so you wouldn't be able to see anything from that angle. You would be able to see T5 well from that vantage point, true; but I'm not aware of any immediate plans to build T5 -I'm pretty sure it's intended to go on the former Deutsche Bank site which right now, is still being excavated. Even if and when it is built, it will certainly not be finished before T2 and T3.

You will, however have a nice view of the Performing Arts Center from there eventually, but it's unlikely in the next few years, because they can't even demolish the terminal entrance that is currently on the PAC site until the Calatrava hub is finished, and that's 2014 at the earliest.

The shape is nice and great for the site, but the cladding is bland, especially in the context of its even blander sister buildings (except for 7). This building is screaming out for mullions or some sort of external ceramics.

Well I must say, yesterday when i took those photos was the first time I have been to the site any time other then early morning. I happened to hit it right around sunset and let me tell you, no photo will ever do the glass that is going onto this building justice. It is so gorgeous to see up front, and yesterday the way the sun happened to be hitting it was just surreal.

I know a lot of you are just basing your judgements on photos. Please hold any thoughts until you see these new building for yourself, because they are really something to behold.

Did they increase the height 4 WTC instead of decreasing the height of 3 WTC because I was looking at the World Trade Center website newest renderings from the Hudson River and compared the older versions of the same renders and 4 WTC looks taller in the new ones and slightly shorter in the older ones, thus making 3 WTC look shorter. If that makes sense.

The height is still 977 ft they haven't increased or decreased the height of either one of the towers that I know of. Probably just inconsistencies with the renderings not a change in height for the buildings

More than 600 cops assigned to police the Ground Zero area will have a new home - 4 World Trade Center, Mayor Bloomberg disclosed Wednesday.

"The tower will be home to the new World Trade Center police precinct and staffed with more than 600 NYPD officers," Bloomberg told reporters Wednesday at a briefing on the rebuilding of lower Manhattan.

The city is leasing about 600,000 square feet in the 2.3 million-square-foot building. The building will also be the headquarters of the Port Authority, which will occupy about a third of the office space.

The World Trace Center site may be the most famous construction project since the Tower of Babel, if not the most contentious.

But most of the work has taken place behind some 13,000 feet of blue construction fencing, and so to the extent that we have watched the progress, we’ve mostly relied on the images sent out from behind the fence—many of them the work of Joe Woolhead. The official photographer for Larry Silverstein and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, he has spent almost every day for the past seven years documenting the slow pace of construction at Ground Zero.

...“The great satisfaction is knowing I’m documenting what is probably the most significant building project in the whole world,” Mr. Woolhead said earlier this month. “This site, no matter what it will be, will always be associated with 9/11. And yet we, as humans, to move on, we have to build bigger and better than ever before.” Mr. Woolhead was giving The Observer a tour around the “east bathtub,” the section of the site on the far side of the 1-train tracks. This will be home to 200, 175 and 150 Greenwich Street in the near and not so near future—the structures currently known as Towers 2, 3 and 4, the work of brand-name architects Lord Norman Foster, Sir Richard Rogers and Fumihiko Maki of Japan.

In a move to avert a work stoppage on a new World Trade Center office tower, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is planning to back down in a monthslong financial dispute with its bond investors, people familiar with the agency's plans said. Port Authority officials intend to restructure a planned financing package for 4 World Trade Center in order to address the concerns of existing Port Authority bondholders who blocked the $1.37 billion effort in the spring, the people said.

The new bond sale, if it proceeds, would remove a major potential obstacle at the World Trade Center site, where 4 World Trade Center and the 104-story One World Trade Center are rising.

Since April, the fight had threatened to halt construction of 4 World Trade, a 72-story tower being built by developer Larry Silverstein. Mr. Silverstein needs to sell more than $1.3 billion in tax-free bonds to finish construction on the building, now 51 stories up.

A lot of progress has happened since I seen these tower a year and a half ago in person.
All these towers have amzing cladding. The reflections of the buildings are so clear.

Not to be a debbie downer, as I do love this tower, but I can't help but think about how many birds may die because of the facade. :(

this one is approaching the 200m mark sooner than I thought. just great progress! whereas 1WTC was more or less on hold this august (due to the 9/11 anniversary) 4WTC made huge steps forward!

It's certainly a beast! The cladding is looking great, very different from the other glass we've seen so far. It's a nice contrast to 1WTC and 7. Creates some variety, yet still retains the ulta-modern glass feel.
