IMO it actually would look more in keeping with the WTC complex if 1LP were repainted a greyish tone, similar to what shown in the photos. It makes a nice contrast with 150G.

Actually, why would they keep the black if:

A: The gray paint on top looks fresher (unless it's some sort of primer)

B: The tarp is specifically located *there*

and

C: The black from the bottom up *still* looks like crud?

Because the building is topped off and mostly completed on the outside, I sometimes forget that there's still plenty of work to be done and currently going on inside.

This building was always my favorite out of the new World Trade Center. Sure it's not the fanciest designed building on the planet, but it doesn't have to be. It's a minimal, almost solemn tower while still being a dominant presence. Awesome structure. Truly world class.

I would totally be fine if Tower 3 was turned into a permanent stump and some high flying company ponied up the cash to make Tower 2 their signature tower. That way we could sorta/kinda appreciate the view of Tower 4 from the north.

JayPro
Feb 18, 2013, 5:47 PM
But then this tower would have no complement. Never mind the unavoidable fact that 200G's one best view is from due west.

BEcause of the placement of the Calatrava hub, this whole complex is basically two sets of buildings, which in turn are supposed to complement each other. That's supremely imoprtant to keep in mind.

This building needs 175G to complement it, whereas on the other side of the Hub, 200G and 1WTC complement each other.

They're putting the curtain wall in where the north construction elevator was. I suspect they will completely fill that gap in before continuing at the top, although they've also been building the temporary derricks around the top to install the last few rows of glass as well, so who knows.

Construction on 4 World Trade Center will be complete in Fall 2013, says Silverstein Properties, the building’s developer. Once complete, the tower will house 1.8 million square feet of office and 146,000 square feet of retail space. Top left: Renderings by Maki and Associates show how the entrance to Tower 4 with an open lobby and glass façade will look from Church St. Top right: the curtain wall installation is nearly complete, over 69 of 72 floors. Fireproofing, masonry underway and below-grade mechanical work is still underway.

Nice tower, but so close to 1000 ft! Why couldn't they just add 23 feet to the height? Things like that bug the hell outta me for some reason. Here in Phoenix, the same thing also applies for the tallest building at 483 ft tall. Almost 500 feet but not quite.

Yeah, 4WTC is exactly 977 feet (297.8m) to the glass parapet. So it's only 7 feet (or 2.2m) short of having supertall status.

There is an outdoor deck for the highest setback planned for people who work in the building.

Silverstein Properties’ Janno Lieber and Serge Demerjian Talk WTC

By Daniel Geiger
9/11/12

What were some of the engineering challenges on 4 World Trade?

Mr. Demerjian: One of the exciting things we’re doing is creating an outdoor terrace on that setback for tenants to use as functional space, like Rock Center. That’s up on the 56th floor, which is taller than 7 WTC. Some of the challenge is the wind. How do you deal with that and create a windscreen? We’re talking about that, making sure it’s a usable, friendly space. There are some challenges with that and it’s great.

It's wonderful.

It's actually almost done, I would say like 80% at least, the building should be finished by the summer...

This is the "window-washing" rig that is mounted on the roof of Tower-4. It can be easily moved around the perimeter of the roof on steel tracks and is used to support a "hanging scaffold" which glides down the side of the building and carries a crew of window washers/maintenance workers. The exterior of the building is ALL glass and will need full-time maintenance.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/164238_636538176375838_2070618964_n.jpg
The wide-open spaces inside the floors of Tower-4! This is the west side of the 38th floor. No interior "fit-out" work has started yet on any of the floors. Waiting for the word!

Setting perimeter window "curtainwall" panels 66 floors up in the air at Tower-4 a few days ago! Setting these window panels at Tower-4 requires nerves of steel. All workers are required to wear a safety harness which is attached to a retractable lanyard. If you happen to slip, the retractible locks in, like a safety belt and stops your fall.

And the window panel gets lowered safely into place with the help of a mini-crane which is situated a couple of floors above.

Perimeter safety-nets are all closed up and everyone heads home safely. We'll do it all again tomorrow!

Update from the weekend. 150 Greenwich is quite simple but the glass adds so much depth because it is SO high quality. The reflection is unparalleled in NYC (or anywhere?).

For a "boring glass box" to some people, there is something special about this tower. It manages to be imposing and invisible, hard-edged/rock-solid and ethereal.

And when the sun hits the setback, while the rest of the building catches a different angle of light, it's got a hell of a brilliant crown. I also like how the trapezoid crown meets the view down Fifth ave. farther uptown, a sharp angle would have been like a visual dagger.

I almost wish it were as boxy as most people think it is. The setback is ok, but I would like it even more if it rose straight to the top, as seen from the southern and eastern sides.

I think the setback gives the building character. Without it, it would just look like a taller 7 world trade center

This tower would be complimented by an ice skating rink.
If there were some video displays on this tower, we would have a mini-Times Sq.

I can't help it, but that setback is begging for a public observation deck.

I don't think so. 7 is a glass, "boxy" building, but they really don't look alike.

The glass on 150 Greenwich is far superior to Hancock's. I would say it is the best in NYC.

Well, you also have about 40 years of engineering development to make 4WTC's glass/mullions/etc. better than the Hancock's, but I digress.

Should be headed down in a few weeks to see this. I'm very excited it's nearly done. The last few pages of pictures have been incredible.
