Looks like a notch has appeared in the SE corner... Am i correct?

Thought it was odd a column was not placed in that corner.

It's a rhombus with a trapezoid shaped top. Boxes are square or rectangular. So yeah! Other than the shape... it is totally a box! For people who don't understand the concept of a box!:tup:

I was at the site today without my camera which I now regret. They were raising steel, and the cranes were pulling many objects up to the top for work. I wished I brought my camera with me. I would have had captured pictures of that. However many tourists are stunned with what is going on at the World Trade Center. I heard many of them say "Those two towers were knocked down, but they are building new massive ones now down below".

I still think that many people (well maybe not here on SSP specifically) don't realize how tall and massive this tower will be once finished.

This tower is a beauty but it's way too fat. At 1000 feet, it might (will?) look like a much shorter tower. It's the same problem with Bofa and Goldman Sacks. Those are three wonderful towers... with a big flaw: They look shorter than they are because they are too bulky. Consequently, they make the Manhattan skyline look less impressive, while it should be the opposite... :(

As a genuine admirer of the NYC skyline, I do hope this trend will stop. One 57 is a good example of what should be built to enhance the skyline. :tup:

Its not an aesthetic question really. Office buildings need very large floor plates to be attractive to companies, while residential buildings do not need large interior spans. In short residential buildings will remain tall and thin, and office buildings will stay chunky and large.

In the thirty's it was not the trend and it gave to NYC its most wonderful skyscrapers, all of them office towers. But you are right, the market doesn't care so much about aesthetic anymore. So let's hope NYC will only build residential towers in the future. ;)

I like slender towers too,but there should also enough examples of monoliths,like the Twins. The New York Skyline should be a mixture,but yes,I hope more residential buildings like One 57 get built to revive the look from the 30s.

That's not true. The office towers at the Hudson Yards will be magnificent, as will be 2 WTC. Bank of America, Bear Sterns and Hearst are all spectacular new office towers, and Goldman is very nice.

P.S.: When one sees this tower in person, it's not remotely "fat".

But it's not a question of beauty! those towers, taken individually are gorgeous.

No, it's a question of fitting in the whole picture. It's a question of giving the feeling of a skyline soaring to the sky. Unfortunately, those new office towers only flatten it.

If Bofa, Hearst, T4 (which is the subject) had been built with a shape as slender as One 57 or the future Tower Verre, they would look twice their height. Too bad...

425 5th Avenue (a residential tower) is the perfect example of a "small" tower looking tall.

Someways, I think they should reimplement the 1916 zoning law (with some adjustments of course) to any future office towers in NYC. Because it seems the market, which decides the size of each floor plates it wants (as large as a possible) as well as our wage (as small as possible) is unable to regulate itself. ;)

Not exactly.
4WTC will be a transition between the existing "flat" skyline (culminating at 850 ft) and the future skyline dominated by 1WTC (and maybe, some day, 2&3 WTC).
I guess that the whole point was to stay away as much as possible from the single (or double) soaring object, deemed vulnerable, and build instead a set of skyscrapers with increasing heights. The idea is that a herd is safer.

Ladies and gentlemen 4 World Trade Center has now past it's setback and the top part is the only part that needs completion. Time to celebrate.



Why is the "setback" a big deal? If If said "ladies and gentlemen 4 World Trade center has just had 100 pigeons poop on the last floor before the "glorious setback" would the whole country take notice? LOL

They were stunned by the size of the buildings not by the change at the site.

Why hello there Tokyo :cheers: I absolutely love this picture. The west side of Downtown has got to be one of the most futuristic cluster of buildings in the United States. A few more sky bridges would really pull it together.

Initially looking at this photo I was like WHAT, they must be defying the laws of physics and engineering over at that WTC site. Then I knew it was the glass and how beautifully it reflected the sky. Then again that is how the old 5 WTC would somewhat look if it was built.

We had bulky buildings that worked. Look at the Twin Towers that existed for example. They turned out well.

We had bulky buildings that worked. Look at the Twin Towers that existed for example. They turned out well.

I strongly agree, I would even say that they turned out majestic.

But (according to me), their bulkiness was not a problem thanks to two combined factors (which applies to 1WTC):

Their heights (much taller than T4)
Their thin windows (which gave the visual effect they were even taller)

Anyway, I have to admit that in the last picture posted by NY Guy, T4 looks really great. :)

Pictures don't do the glass justice. Was by the site a few days ago & 4 WTC is definitely phenomenal; some of the best glass in NYC for sure.

If I was a betting man... and I am, I think Tower 4 (IMO) will top out before Tower 1 does.

I think you're right. Tower 4 is already on the next set of office floors following the setback so I think 4 will top out first since now it's close to topping 800'. Tower 1 has mainly mechanical floors left and those will take time so this one should top out by April or May, depending mostly on weather conditions.

Important milestone on this latest picture of T4 from the carloscam: T4 now tops One Liberty Plaza. Imho, it's important for the overall appearance of the whole complex for T4 to dominate the buildings around it, especially since it may be years before T2 and T3 are completed. So this is another good moment and will get even better in the next 6-8 months as more of the trapezoid steel is completed and cladded.

Surreal to see this already surpassing OLP. It truly seems like just yesterday that steel was first rising for the lobby. Now with the smaller floor-plates it's all cruising from here to the top.

Not sure if it been said before but the sheer reflective nature of the glass on this building is simply amazing. Its almost like a "chameleon", blending into the surroundings or sky depending if its clear or overcast. Just have not seen another building display that effect so dramatically (as illustrated by several recent photographs). Just a very unexpected treat.

Yeah, the Gem Tower has superb cladding too. I guess I have too wait a little longer till I make a final judgement call, i.e. till more cladding goes up on that tower.

Just LOVE the cladding on this building. It not only makes the building "disappear" and make the area look bigger but also makes a virtual work of living art appear before your eyes. Looks like a impressionist painting, doesn't it?

I love it. It's been overshadowed by the Freedom Tower (imagine if that weren't under construction) but now begins to enter the spotlight as it reaches for second tallest status Downtown (at least for a while).

As far as supertall status, it's only 8 ft short. That won't make a visable difference on the skyline.
