That's a gross misconception. Dallas, TX is warmer year round than NYC because is obviously further south, but in the summer, NYC can be just as hot, if not hotter, than Dallas. :

Dallas is typically much hotter than NYC in the summer, and Dallas is extremely humid. Trust me, it's VERY hot and humid; NYC is nowhere close.

Mark my words, Larry will be renting that space out for weddings and bar mitzvahs before you know it. :D

Seriously, it's a known fact that they were looking into installing special guard rails to cut down on the wind speed, to make it more comfortable for guests.

Modern = crap

Dont get me wrong theres a lot of very good modern architecture, but most sucks and this one is just a big glass boring box, really is, sorry.

i think is looks fantastic. its not like there isn't already to many gargoyles in New York anyhow. not every building has to be some tacky/gaudy, overly embellished shrine. simple shapes and geometry are where its at for me. and the glass is to die for. did i mention that it is 977 feet tall. give us a break. this is skyscraperpage and if you don't like big tall buildings being built in New York, well then, whats up with you?

Okay, maybe I'm a little confused here, but I was under the impression that the top half of 4WTC was supposed to "reflect" 1WTC in the window panes. How come no one's taken a photo of the 4WTC windows with 1WTC reflection in it? Dumb question, I suppose.

Was reading the article and cant help but wonder what the hell he's talking about here?

"Bridges in the hub?
Mr. Demerjian: There is a bridge that was created over the subway box, a clear span so you can walk underneath. It’s 180 feet. He didn’t want columns. 180 feet clear span, which is great, but there is a price to pay for that. On the west side, there is a bridge structure over the PATH wall, which are the entrances down to the PATH station. That is a complex structure. It makes building really tall buildings look simple."

A Street, Reconstructed After 9/11, Becomes a Streetscape

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/08/07/nyregion/08BLOCKS-span/08BLOCKS-span-articleLarge.jpg

“Sky Memory,” a delicate, 98-foot-diameter titanium arc by the sculptor Kozo Nishino, has been installed in the lobby of 4 World Trade Center.

By DAVID W. DUNLAP
August 7, 2013

Something remarkable is happening where Greenwich Street used to run through the World Trade Center site. It is becoming Greenwich Street again.

For the first time since reconstruction of the trade center began, a New York City streetscape is taking form. There are sidewalks and curbs, oak trees and honey locusts, street lamps and pigeons. And, as on any street near high-risk targets, there are also ranks of heavily reinforced posts, or bollards.

But even with the bollards, the scene is appealingly open. Only security guards prevent visitors to the National September 11 Memorial from simply walking across Greenwich Street and up to the lobby of 4 World Trade Center, now under construction.

The intersection offers palpable evidence that the monolithic 16-acre superblock that existed before Sept. 11, 2001, has truly been pared down.

Amanda M. Burden, the director of the City Planning Department, said the agency had pushed to re-establish Greenwich and Fulton Streets running through the trade center site as a way of integrating the complex with Lower Manhattan.

“The use of sidewalk materials and their layout complement the memorial in a sophisticated and subtle manner,” she wrote in an e-mail on Tuesday. “There were countless mock-ups and sample reviews to make sure that we got the selection of granite, finishes, proportions and layout just right, including full-scale mock-ups.

“We were also intensively engaged in the bollard design, helping to facilitate an elliptical and tapered form that is effective from a security standpoint but not intrusive in size,” Ms. Burden added.

The portion of Greenwich Street between Vesey and Liberty Streets has existed in recent years, but only as a construction haul road. Seeing the partly finished landscaping brings home the fact that one day it will be restored to traffic, though on a highly restricted basis.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is constructing the new section of Greenwich Street, which it expects to complete by the end of 2014. Some time around then, or early in 2015, the authority will move its headquarters into 4 World Trade Center.

Four World Trade Center is a deliberately understated building that cuts the lowest profile of any in the complex (if a 977-foot tower can be said to cut a low profile). As designed by Fumihiko Maki, 84, of Maki and Associates in Tokyo, it also contributes a great deal to the streetscape.

Unlike the rest of the tower, which is skinned in reflective glass, the building’s 47-foot-high lobby is clad in clear glass. It almost seems to embrace the street, a gesture made even stronger by an 80-foot-wide space between columns.

The closeness of the lobby to the memorial imposed a special obligation on Mr. Maki and his client, Silverstein Properties, to create a space that was respectful without being sepulchral. Last week, their intentions for the lobby became clear with the installation of “Sky Memory,” a delicate, 98-foot-diameter titanium arc by the sculptor Kozo Nishino, of Kyoto, Japan. This is his first commission in the United States.

Mr. Nishino has collaborated with Mr. Maki before. But his trade center commission owes itself to a visit by the developer, Larry A. Silverstein, and his wife, Klara, to the ArtCourt Gallery booth at a 2007 art fair in New York City. The gallery represents Mr. Nishino and was showing a model of his work.

“I had no idea about Larry,” recalled Mitsue Yagi, the gallery director. “I said, ‘This artist makes huge-scale artwork.’ Larry said, ‘I’m making a very big building.'”

Despite its great size, the “Sky Memory” sculpture weighs only 474 pounds. It is composed of seven sections of welded, exposed trusswork that are cantilevered and balanced 22 feet above the lobby floor, as if they were floating. The metal shifts in color from deep sapphire blue to pale jade green.

Reflected in the polished black granite wall from which it springs, the arc looks like a circle. Or a zero. Could that be an intentional reference to “ground zero” by an artist whose works are found in the two Japanese cities on which the United States dropped atomic bombs during World War II?

“It’s less about capturing a moment of time in the past,” Mr. Nishino answered during a conversation at the site. “It’s more about looking into the future.” A few days later, he wrote in an e-mail that he had begun thinking about the meaning of ground zero in New York, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

If the setting of 4 World Trade Center turns out to be thought-provoking as well as attractive, Greenwich Street, north of Liberty, will be a very good streetscape indeed.

Yes it is !
A third iteration of the missing volume, in the form of an extra ten floors at the top, would have been nice.

I would have loved to seen that as well. Here's a quick photoshop of what it would look like. I hope you're not mad tectonic. I was the perfect photo to do it with.

Ha that's cool. It does looks better. I don't mind individuals playing around with my photos. I do mind media websites, publications and companies using them without permission. That's why I usually put the watermarks on them.

Anyways good job. :)

I can admit when I'm wrong and I was very wrong when I looked at the renders for this building years ago and wrote it off as dull and unimaginative. I do like it better than WTC 1 (though I'm not sure how much that has to do with the compromised spire). WTC 4's glass is so clean and beautiful and the sharp angles remind me a touch (in a good way) of Hong Kong's great modern skyscrapers. With the rest of the towers complimenting it, the WTC complex will be a sight to behold when it's done and will match in grandeur (at least as a whole, if not the towers individually) any real-estate projects happening in the Middle East or Asia.

I find it crazy that in most photos of the completed building it looks like a rendering. Also interesting in some skyline shots from some angles it appears to almost disappear. The glass is incredible. This building really turned out amazing.

Thx for posting the photo. Note the anti-truck bomb bollards on the east side of Greenwich St.

When will this section of Greenwich open to pedestrians?

I THINK the building is supposed to open (in some form) in November, is this correct?

According to The Daily News, the building is opening November 12th and the tower's section of Greenwich St "will soon re-open". This section of Greenwich did not exist when the Twin Towers and plaza were there.

Is it just me or are all of the arrows on the street facing south, implying it is a one way street heading south. How will the street open before they are done with the construction of the transportation hub?

Thx: hadn't noticed the arrows. I'll go back & look.

It will be closed by construction barriers/fencing north of Cortlandt Street where the unbuilt towers & transportation hub start. the article made no mention of Cortlandt St or the IRT Cortlandt St subway station.

In addition, AFAIK, the northern portion of Greenwich within the WTC is blocked by the temporary PATH terminal headhouse.

From my perspective I would simply like to go downtown and stand on a portion Greenwich St that hasn't existed in half a century, before the weather turns nasty.

EDIT: Yeah, the arrows on Greenwich are pointing south, but there will be no regular auto traffic traffic passing THROUGH the WTC site from the north. William Ma's photo from last week (link below) shows both sides of Greenwich in front of 4WTC. Both sides have anti truck bomb bollards, as you'd expect.

If I recall correctly, at the request of the NYPD, the streets going through the site will be closed to regular traffic. They plan to install blocks similar to the ones found by Wall St. and only authorized vehicles will be allowed onto the street.

I personally hate that idea. 1 WTC is basically bomb-proof and they're all surrounded by high-tech bomb sniffing bollards. I don't see why this is needed. Renders to this day show traffic flowing through, but that won't be the case. With no traffic, it seems weird to go through the effort of repaving those streets as full blown streets. I would have preferred to see the design modified to eliminate the streets, and just make it all pedestrian concourse, or maybe keep the streets but blend them into the concourse more, and mask their utilitarian purpose.

The building will be only partially open on November 12, mostly lobby and perhaps few office floors. Retail part will not be ready and I am not sure when transportation concourse which connects to PATH will open. Also, Port Authority who owns 601,000 square feet of offices wants to sublease a quarter of its space.

The good news is all construction fence around the tower will be removed on November 12th.

IIRC there has been a back and forth battle about regular vehicles on these streets for years. In any case, pedestrians should have access to the south end of Greenwich Real-Soon-Now. Greenwich St IS a southbound one way street north of the WTC complex.

This recent NY Post article has some details about the tower opening & a tidbit about the west end of the WTC East/West Connector opening later this week.
Note that this story has a different spin to possible subleasing than the Bloomberg story posted by ILNY above:

Saw this pick on SSP. The glass on 4WTC is so reflective, the reflection of 3WTC almost makes it look as if 4WTC is a clad podium with the core slightly above

From the view of the photo above you can really see just how far along the Transit Hub and 3WTC are coming. The Hub is making very noticeable progress and the podium of 3WTC is largely complete. When funding comes building the tower itself should be relatively speedy. 2WTC is the only stagnant project, but at least now I can finally see all this coming together to become an all-around great site.

Really a shame that the north side of the memorial plaza has so much concrete and so little grass. Would feel a lot better if it had as much grass as the southwestern part kitty corner to it.

That's probably because that part is still clearly under construction, and they have yet to finish putting in the rest of the trees and grass.

It is not unusual for a tall building to open finished floors while still under construction. This was the case with Trump Tower in Chicago and that is how One57 will open next month.

The Chicago Tribune states:
That makes next week's ceremonies, which will include Tuesday's performance by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and a Wednesday opening, seem more like marketing hoopla than a bona fide opening. Indeed, 4 World Trade Center is, for now, a shell. Tenants will start moving in next year.

Right, it's not unusual at all, especially with large buildings. In this case, the opening is more ceremonial. But the Twin towers had people moving in before the upper floors were completed.
