There moving the right tower crane to the setback because where the right tower crane currently is, it's getting in the way of the floors that are being put up.:)

I'm beginning to see the purpose of the setback. It almost has the effect of cutting down on the "boxiness" of the tower and will help to give a "slimmimg", "soaring" effect.

I'm surprised they would need two cranes now, due to the smaller floor plate.

And since these cranes are self hoisting and do not extend the height of the tower, I don't see how they "get in the way".

I bet they still remove the lower tower crane now that a new "base crane" is on the 1st roof.

this tower is clever the way the setback at the top lines up with that black steel building behind it, and the way the lower part of the tower's angle lines up with 7 WTC and the setback starts in/around the height of 7 WTC too,

i think this towers sole purpose is a complimenter tower and the transition between the rest of the city and the WTC complex. that's why it's pretty conservative in design,

this setback is turning out better than expected (if such a thing... yes, it's just a setback). it adds some cool geometry to it, especially from that street view ^^^

I don't think the architect was thinking that way..he just wanted to create a beautiful skyscraper..no architecht wants to take a back seat to another one in such high profile project, he is japanese so perhaps his cultural background influenced his design....thats it! IMO

A little more on the design...
http://www.wtc.com/about/office-tower-4/office-tower-4-design

In designing 150 Greenwich Street, Maki and Associates took a two–fold approach – creating a "minimalist" tower that would assume an understated, reverent position opposite the memorial while developing a more active podium intended to foster interaction with the immediate urban environment at pedestrian street level, bringing energy and vitality as part of the overall downtown redevelopment effort.

The building's façades will be clad in floor–to–ceiling windows utilizing composite glass with multiple layers of coatings intended to achieve a mat metallic quality with a luminous sheen. This will give the tower an abstract quality – minimal, light, cool in color, and ephemeral, changing with the light of day. Seen from a distance, the tower will possess a unique angular profile that is chiselled at its crown, assuming position amid the spiral composition proscribed for Towers 1 through 4 under the master plan for the site.

The two glass obtuse edges of the tower on the southwest and northeast corners will be articulated with dramatic indentations, making them appear slender and sharp. Inside, a single edge will form two corners with a window from the open office to allow for uninterrupted views at the corner tip of the floor.

The inner core wall of the lobby is clad in polished black granite to mirror the Memorial inside and is rotated to realign the geometry of the space so that it is parallel to the park. The walls of the elevator banks are finished in fused oak and glass panels to echo the oak trees lining the Memorial Park.

The four corners of the building site lie at varying topographical elevations, resulting in a 12–foot difference from the high point on the corner of Church and Cortlandt Streets to the lowest point on the corner of Greenwich and Liberty Streets, diagonally across the site. As a result, the street fronts of the building at ground level on all four sides will be on an incline, and the interior levels all will need to mitigate the differences to achieve comfortable entry points as well as harmonious spatial relationships with the surrounding pedestrian environment.

I was going to school to become an architect. I was top of my class at LTU in Southfield Michigan. Two years and almost 40 grand later I realized there were no jobs (architects have an incredibly high unemployment rate) and all the ones I knew with jobs were working on exciting stuff like CVS zoning compliance in Ohio or cookie-cutter houses. Unless you are a starchatect it can be a very frustrating field because everyone in it is so creative, but very few of them get to do creative work. Anyway, I hope you are successful. A little advice, learn CAD and photoshop before you start school or you will already be behind.

As for 4WTC, this building is looking more and more Japanese all the time, which I love.

Nobody gives you anything. If you want to be creative and design buildings, you need to be the one who makes it happen. Get your practical experience doing the boring stuff, and let your employer pay you while you work on getting licensed. If you're lucky, you can find an employer who gives you stimulating work. If not, the experience (and the money) is still worthwhile in the medium-term.

Once you get licensed, you're free to start your own business where you are in charge of finding the work that you personally find stimulating. This might mean moving to a different city or a different state (obviously transferring your license). Just on this forum, there are architects and designers who are doing interesting work in cities around the country - it's not just on the coasts, and not just in the wealthy areas.

The people who stay doing "CVS zoning compliance", as you put it, are often those that have other life goals that don't involve "intellectual architecture". If you start a family, or you need to be close to your relatives, etc. then that will limit your choices, but they're still YOUR choices to make. If you're in one of those situations, it's up to you to decide whether you prefer the stability of the housing-tract work or the potential excitement but big risk of starting your own practice, and to weigh the consequences of that decision on the other aspects of your life.

I don't mean to belittle your feelings. I'm facing a really crappy employment market myself. But this notion that outside conditions are somehow "forcing" you to abandon your dreams is something I disagree with. If there's an obstacle, you need to figure out how to get around it - even if they didn't teach you that in school. You can't get everything in life, but you can almost always get one thing if you're willing to sacrifice everything else.

I found 9,000 architecture jobs in NYC on Indeed.com paying 80K or more in 1 hit. I also expect the economy to be more better by the time I graduate. So I expect the number to be higher. This is getting off topic, but just because the internet found 9k architecture jobs doesn't mean you would qualify for even a quarter of them right out of school. Most jobs today require several years of experience just to be considered for the position. And in today's economy, the old adage "it is who you know, not what you know" could not be more correct.

This is the kind of simple design that would have been perfect for a set of mini-twins. Just mirror the design and plop one next door.

But that might have looked too much like Time Warner Center. Either way, the setback is making it look that much better. I think the Greenwich Street towers are going to steal the show from Tower 1 when all is said and done, since their lobbies will be much more inviting what with the above ground retail, below ground access, and lack of a ~20 story concrete bunker. Tower 1 is probably going to be a huge pain in the ass when it comes to security.

I love how in NYCLuver's second shot, the museum almost looks like the base of Tower 4 - and they work together well. The glass on the museum practically matches the glass on Tower 4, just set on a diagonal angle. Great coordination between the two projects, even if it's not entirely on purpose.

By itself, 4WTC seems disappointingly plain. But place it next to the three other (completed) towers and it becomes obvious why it has a plain design. Its not meant to steal the spotlight, the three other towers are supposed to (less of the third tower, mostly the first two). Its presence is simply meant to complete the site, not be a centerpiece. To me though, its still a very classy and dignified design, and the shimmering facade is gorgeous.

Once the entire World Trade Center is complete with all four towers, downtown will be beautiful again, and the skyline will be more than restored.

The funny thing about 4WTC is that at 72 stories, in almost any other city it would be huge and dominate the skyline. Yet here it will be dwarfed by the sizes of the three other towers. Goes to show how big this project is.

Only 1WTC really dwarfs tower 4.

2WTCs slant begins at about 950 feet, so the tower gets narrow up top, 3WTC may only turn out to be 90 feet taller, but hopefully not.

That's just about the only thing I regret about this tower - the location. It will be dwarfed by the 3 larger towers, appearing as more filler on the skyline,
when in reality it could easily dominate many others.

That's what its supposed to be, though, just a building to fill in the skyline. Its not meant to steal the spotlight or be a centerpiece like 1WTC or the two other towers. But its simple presence completes the complex and brings a sense of closure, which is why it is small and has a simplified yet noticeable design. I've always said this to people who say 4WTC should have been taller and had a bolder design.

Obviously. However, a 977 ft building easily dominates in most other locations, that's the point we're making.

If Four World Trade Center was built in Honolulu, San Francisco, Boston, and Miami it would be the tallest building in their skyline. For example Honolulu's tallest building is 350 feet. If you put Four World Trade Center into their skyline it would easily be seen everywhere since it would be 620 feet taller than any other building surrounding it.

An extreme case, the Freedom Tower itself would be dwarfed. For most places, a 977 ft tower stands out. Tower 4 will be the fourth tallest on the
lower Manhattan skyline, in the shadow of taller towers. However, even if you place it on the opposite side of the skyline, it would stand out just a bit more.

Yeah, it's weird, they actually shortened the height of that tower a little bit when they got rid of the x-bracing, I noticed it in the new renderings. Why they did that I'm not sure, but it'll still definitely be a noticeable part of the skyline.

The smooth, solid, unbroken glass facade really belies the height of this building in photos. I was in Lower Manhattan several hours ago and I went to check out this building (as well as 1WTC). It is HUGE. All the photos I've seen cannot adequately convey the size of this building. In the original Twin Towers, the vertical beams in the facade gave you a good idea in the photos of how big they were. But the new WTC won't have that. So to truly experience the hugeness (is that a word?) of these buildings you have to come to LM and experience them yourself, up close and personal.

I have to say, the more high resolution pics that have been posted of 4wtc, the more I notice how this new generation of building represents an updated version of the Art Deco that was wildly popular in the city 80 years ago. Back when the ESB took shape, a new form of architecture brought on by better steel and tech gave the city buildings that to this day are among it's tallest. Now there is a new first with design, and safety. Mirror glass complimented by perforated steel, and frosting, and geometric shapes and curves that were not feasible are happening now. We are going to see a new art deco standard, like one57. And Hopefully not like one liberty Plaza. That's one ugly bitch. Seems to me we only inject art and magnificence into our buildings and cities when we are feeling down as a country..
