I am sorry to inform you that the forum member that you all knew as Zensteeldude died from injuries sustained in an auto accident on April 20th, the day before his 49th birthday.

Know that his wife and three children are alive and well and coping with this tragedy as best they can. This is the LAST post from Zen. God bless us all.

I checked http://www.nj.com/obituaries/ for obituaries (using Linda and age 48) and couldn't find anything... But I'd say it'd be a really really sick joke to say that if it weren't true.

It's almost as if they're honoring Zensteeldude by installing the first panels of glass. At least that's the way I like to think about it. :cheers:

Wow Roldan, that picture clears up so much for me now. Earlier today I was watching a reporter on CNN where the front of 4WTC was in the background and I could see that looked like glass up high but I never thought for a second that it was a part of 4WTC, so I was trying to think what else it could be... awesome that it actually was a part of 4WTC!

Well, I for one think the T4 glass looks great. Although, as with the other buildings, it is hard to really see the intended effect until at least a few rows of it are in place. Interesting that we see highly reflective paneling being used again, as in T1. This change alone will certainly give the new WTC a very different look from the old. Thanks for the great images NYCLuver.

BTW, I have paid my respects to Zen in the T1 thread already so I will not repeat those thoughts here.

Hehe, if you made a list of "words least likely to be seen on the WTC site", seems to me that would be pretty high on it. ;)

Seriously, is that like a contractor or what? I'm guessing it isn't a special entrance for Siamese twins.

Actually you see Siamese standpipes all over New York City. So it's a very likely word to see on a building site in Manhattan.

Glass is lookin' good!

BTW, expect even more reflection on the glass panels on this tower. T4's glass facade was specifically design to be less transparent than the other WTC towers, thus causing more reflection.

4 WTC Facade Now Going Up

On the west side of 4 World Trade Center (WTC), the first glass façade panels were installed on April 25th and are now continuing up the building. The façade work marks a new milestone in construction of the 72-story tower, whose curtain wall is designed “to achieve a matte metallic quality with a luminous sheen,” according to developer Silverstein Properties.

The glass itself is fabricated by Viracon in Minnesota, and is made into complete panels by Benson Global, the Oregon-based company manufacturing the curtain walls for both 4 and 1 WTC. The Tower 4 façade includes 11,000 glass panels, half of which are already completed are now being shipped to the site. Architect Fumihiko Maki and other team members already viewed panel samples in summer 2009, when a “mock-up” was constructed at the MetFab plant in New Jersey.

The future 2.5 million-square-foot tower’s steel frame is now up to the 23rd floor, with concrete, masonry, and elevator work continuing as the structure rises. The completed tower will be home to a 47-foot-tall lobby that faces the National 9/11 Memorial, enclosed by 20 large glass panels. The tower is projected to open in late 2013.

Wow, very reflective. This is going to look just like one big silvery mirror. A nice contrast from the blue glass of 1 and 7 WTC.

It's going to be such a joy, a sensory feast, to walk thru the memorial park one day, with all the grand towers all around. I wish some would stop letting their obsession with rebuilding the Twins, reaching exactly 1,000 feet, etc., get in the way of their appreciation for what is probably the most architecturally accomplished project of our time.

The glazing is really nice but I'm not getting their use of:

“to achieve a matte metallic quality with a luminous sheen”

I think they need to look up what the word "matte" means. Brushed stainless steel has a matte finish. This looks mirrored to me.

And the reason why the American flag is red white and blue because it bounces back all colors of the visible spectrum with a little more emphasis on blue and red lights, right?

That's part of what I meant. To elaborate, in physics, light rays cannot hit an object and stop suddenly. It must bounce back (mirror), OR go through it(clear glass), OR it can be absorbed or turned into heat energy (black). In this case, most of the light cannot go through it because it is not as transparent as the other WTC tower's facade, and bounces back. Take a look at STR's rendering. You'll see what I mean. And finally, the blue sky tops off the reflection, giving the tower (and all WTC towers) a blue finish.

A free lesson on light spectrums in about 2 minutes. Can't beat that, can you?

All the preliminary renderings of 4WTC showed a matte facade, but Silverstein had the final say on the glazing. I have no doubt that he chose the reflective glass, whether on price or aesthetic grounds.

how many floors is this up to ? also, i was just thinking, as much as a monster 1WTC is right now imagine that this one will be about 100 ft taller than WTC is at this point. am i somewhat close on that?

With all due respect, TGA, all I could visualize in my mind when I read this was layman Joe rambling on the couch about something he vaguely understood but couldn't quite get right. It would be nice if you describe a phenomenon your way, but please, do it without trying too hard to impress people by juggling scientific terms you barely understand. We get what you're trying to say.



I really don't want to mention this but I do have a B.S in engineering and I'm almost finishing my M.S, and I do know optics quite well. I'm sure a lot of people in this thread are highly educated too, and you don't see them trying to rub their stuff into you either.

It wasn't intended to be rubbed it in their faces. I was simply explaining, - but I was taking it to another level, because apparently uaarkson was attempting to explain to another forumer why "glass looks blue". I mean, everyone knows that the reflection of the blue sky causes the glass to appear blue, right?

In that post, assuming that he was taking it as a joke to intimidate him, I decided to join in. Don't take my previous post as a "rub it in their faces" post, but rather, take it as a joke.

A person with a M.S. and B.S. in engineering (any field of study, really), should hopefully know that was sarcasm...

I have a hard time actually understanding the scale of the whole site, but when I do realize it then it hits me as just amazing how complicated and how much work these guys put into this site with really almost no delays other than weather. Consider this:

The WTC construction workers are the front end corps responsible for recapturing the awesomeness of the Downtown cityscape. And after all these months of bureaucratic and economic hurdles, said workers are chomping at the bit to do their duty, i.e. using novel techniques and recycled building materials to bring to life everything about this magnificent complex that's been planned, negotiated and quibbled over for more than 7 years.
With respect to Towers One and Four, they almost certainly have no other foreseeable hurdles to clear. Two and Three need anchor tenants; that's a cinch. When they come, there's no stopping at street level, which is what I would think these workers pray for more than anything.
BTW, I'm sure that the speed of construction we're seeing will not put structural integrity on the sacrificial altar of beating a deadline. Perahps I'm saying that out of the sheer incredulity on my part over how far along Tower One really has come...and, from the looks of it, this one here.

definitely a complicated site to work on, especially with the path station/tracks.
not to mention, everything project/tower has to be built with the other ones in mind, little room for error here. like tower 4 has no ground on it's northern wall, which will eventually be side to side with tower 3.

^ Below grade they are wall to wall, but above grade there's some separation. Still, probably one of the more complicated construction sites out there.

Don't worry about it, it just looks that way because there are only few glass panels installed. When there is more, it will look fantastic. Trust me.

Oh and BTW, Horizon in air, if you don't know how to make the fries, STR will be more than happy to make you a rendering of the fries to his statisfaction- for a price, of course.

I think he meant it as a compliment as in "ridiculous" : something that is unbelievable in some way shape or form, an event worthy of memory. (definition in the urban dictionary)

What I find pretty staggering is that Look at 1 WTC NOW...4 WT Center will be 120 feet taller than this when complete and its the SMALLEST of the four new world trade center towers!!!!

4 more floors. It's already at the 32nd floor. Half-way point, in terms of number of floors is 36 (72 total floors divided by 2 = 36). So 4 more floors, then it's halfway done!

In what way? It looks like a glass facade,no different from Lever House or any other all glass facade that was ever built.
