I like the differences in cladding between 1 and 4 wtc. 1wtc is like a watercolor reflection, but this is like a complete mirror image, especially in The Big Apples photo with the pink clouds.

A Tower Grows at 4 World Trade

Redevelopment of the World Trade Center site is evident in the Lower Manhattan skyline, mostly with the under-construction One World Trade Center, now more than 90 floors up. But just across the 16-acre site, another tower—4 World Trade Center—is rising just as fast, if not as tall.

The building is slated for completion at the end of 2013, and unlike One World Trade, it’s being constructed by a private developer, Larry Silverstein.

Oh sorry my bad. I thought that you wanted to know if it will be openair. Steel mullions is the correct answer as stated above. Many high lobbies use them, and many buildings in general use them. Although when steel mullions are used they kinda take that cool effect away that the renders show of the glass looking like its floating in air.

Accident at World Trade Center construction site; worker hurt as steel crane cable snaps
Nerves rattled as load of steel falls at least 40 stories

Workers at the World Trade Center got a scare Thursday when a cable snapped on a crane that was lifting a load of steel, sending the metal crashing down.

One worker was slightly injured when the steel — which fell as many as 40 stories — landed with a mighty crash on a flatbed truck, police sources said.

The worker refused medical treatment, and the work site was shut down as investigators tried to figure out what happened.

The accident occurred just before 10 a.m. near Building 4, which is located on the southeast corner of the 16-acre site near Church and Cortlandt Sts.

The accident was contained to the work area, and commuters heading to work were never in any danger, sources said.

Yea i just read that in the Daily Snooze. Funny but i guess it was back in 98 or 99 i was on a job doing the underground plumbing. The Ironworkers had just started setting columns and beams. The ironworkers had climbed to the top of the columns to connect the first beam when the large bolts that hold the columns to the footing snapped sending the column crashing down and into the ditch we were working in but had just stepped out of so we could measure and cut a piece of cast iron pipe. The ironworkers jumped of and were fine,as the floors hadn't been poured yet,so they hit soft dirt. You wanna talk about feeling lucky?? The 5 foot pinch bar we were using to push the ends of the pipe sections was twisted like a pretzel. The column was fine.....had to be re-set with new bolts, but geez i thought alot about how my son could have been orphaned that day. That happened just before lunch.......needless to say,we packed up for the day and went home after that little episode. I'm just glad noone was hurt. Steel can be replaced easier than a guys life.

Does anyone know which crane has to come down for inspection?

I am assuming the crane on the side of the building since I don't see it anymore.

I am assuming the crane on the side of the building since I don't see it anymore.

That crane was already removed some time ago; it had nothing to do with yersterday's accident. But I'm confused. Both tower cranes on 4WTC look completely intact. In fact there is one picture floating around that suggests it wasn't the crane's fault at all, but the bundle cable holding the girder package together is what came undone and caused the mishap. Can anyone shed some light on this??

The cable snapped. Exterior crane atop setback is using its secondary line at the moment, judging from Carlos's photo.

Steel Shots: Touring 4 World Trade Center

The 44th level of 4 WTC features a belt truss system that transitions the structure from a parallelogram to a trapezoid. Photo: Jacinda Collins

Steel erection is now complete up to the 62nd floor of 4 World Trade Center, planned to be the fourth tallest skyscraper envisioned for the WTC site. Back in December, DCM Erectors provided AISC Regional Engineer Jacinda Collins with a tour of one of the newest additions to the New York City skyline. These are some of her observations:

“4 WTC is the smallest of the skyscrapers at the WTC site,[Looks like someone forgot about 7 WTC] however, it contains a number of unique features. It has a concrete core and utilizes steel and composite outriggers, as well as belt trusses, at the mechanical floors of the structure. The column-free spans from the core to the perimeter are approximately 45 ft with web openings for mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP).

The 44th story is the belt truss level and has a lot going on including a lot of welding.

4 WTC also has a number of super columns and is designed to resist blast and progressive collapse. For erection, DCM created steel platforms for the ironworkers to work at higher levels. The 3-5 story platforms allow the working level to rise with the columns and not the decking.”

A) It's someone not something.

B) Are you crazy? NO we don't want to see that happen again.

A. Are you implying that only humans capture things on camera? I was referring to someTHINGS such as security cameras and other things in that matter.

B. Yes, I am crazy. It would be awesome to see that.

No normal person wants to see a potentially fatal accident because it would be "awesome".

So are you saying all people who watch documentaries and videos about fatal accidents are crazy? It's just interesting! Hell yes I would wanna see this accident on video, especially since no one was hurt.

Strange... I specifically checked when I got on this morning to see if anyone had said anything before posting. Apparently the thread was cached on my work laptop or something because there are a good 2 more pages now than when I looked earlier. My mistake. :koko:

And this is the newer crane that was just recently erected. The second original tower crane was dismantled, NOT moved to the roof.:slob:

The reconfigured core couldn't acomodate the western crane, plus since the floorplate gets considerably smaller above the setback, there wasn't really a need to have two cranes for steel erection.
The newer one that's now being replaced was being used by the concrete contractor.

The newer one that's now being replaced was being used by the concrete contractor. Ok, that's what I kinda figured. But why was the concrete contractor lifting steel that day when the cable snaped? I am guessing crane operators have alot of different dutys & have prioritys over some other stuff that needs to get done first. I am really hoping the new Crane that they put up there is alot better, stronger, & that this kind of accident doesn't happen again.

Question about the cranes:

Originally there were 2 Favcos on the top and a Linkbelt on the side. Then they removed one of the Favcos, and the slider, and put a Linkbelt on top. That is the one that had the accident.

Was that the same crane that was originally on the slider, or did they take that one away and this was a new one?

Otie

The sliding crane was removed after they got 4th crane, I think 4th used to operate at Tower Two, not sure.
