My opinion of tower 4 continues to improve. Its cladding has some significant details that give it a clear edge over 1 WTC. The cladding is nice and dynamic, and the massing is a really excellent choice for its location. The glass also has a nice degree of transparency despite its reflective that gives characters to its many corners. Its main ailment is the poor visual context amongst the other future and current towers. 4 and 7 do a great job bookending the site but tower 4 is a statement in simplicity, one fairly well executed, but in the context of towers 1, 2, and 3 the simplicity gets lost in homogeneity and becomes blandness. I also will never forgive them for covering up those inverted V braces with spandrel.

Please, forgive my tripod-less night photos.

yes i agree, tower 4 is looking better and better. and one might even argue, it's more interesting than tower 1 at the moment. it's got razor sharp edges, little setbacks (with a big one around the corner).. and it's finally looking less fat because the height is coming in to play now.

this tower looks best from the memorial park... way awesome for some reason, towering above at an angle.

it's hard to compare the two, really. the Comcast is designed to be a standalone tower, not a "tower 4" of a complex, it has to look good with the bigger picture. i'd say, if anything, comcast would fit better as tower3, though i'll stick with tower 3.

comcast is a sexy building though. i saw it this summer. it was sick.

^^ Tower 4 was designed simple by purpose, to act as a bridge between the fancier WTC towers and the rest of Lower manhattan. This will harmonize the skyline, and give it a balanced appeal when all towers are done.

Agreed - this tower is definitely my favourite as it oozes class. While other towers and cities have to be audacious to make a statement, all the WTC towers, and in particular 4 WTC don't have to try to get noticed, they just get noticed. Loving this building!

Sure Four World Trade Center might look bland, but so did the Twin Towers. What was wrong with that? The Twin Towers still had a presence so would Four World Trade Center. It would fit right in with the history of the site.

But the twin towers were noticed and beloved for their immense size. This is the shortest building in the WTC. Although it is and will turn out to be beautiful, it is so damn close to 3WTC that they look like siamese twins. The only building in the WTC complex that truly has its free space is 1WTC.

Roadcruiser1

Actually although off topic One World Trade Center doesn't have free space. From vantage points One World Trade Center would be blocked by Two World Trade Center at some locations. This blockage would prevent One World Trade Center from being visible except for the mast.

And when completed 4 WTC will be the 5th or 6th tallest building in NYC. So it'll hardly be lost in the grand scheme of things.

In my humble opinion I think the difference between the new WTC complex and the old is that the old looked stunning from the skyline. The general consensus though is that it was quite soulless walking around the twin towers. The new WTC complex is definitely intended to be more inviting close by and around the memorial and the towers are going to look awesome up close - and in particular 4 WTC will look amazing up close.

lol! i agree... i think a lot of it is because it was built so many years ago (4), and when the new ones are built, it will be considered old... by the time the whole complex is built, it'll be around 7 years old

I disagree. If anything, Tower 7 will be the hidden gem of the complex. Understated in its simplicity, but the materials used make it a real looker.

And a 7 year old building isn't "old."

Anyway. I love Tower 4 myself. At first I hated it. Then I was saddened by the switch from matte glass to reflective glass. Then I saw it in person, loved it, and realized that if Towers 2 and 3 take a while to get built, Towers 1 and 4 will make a great set of "twins" until 2 and 3 are built.

4WTC is actually an extremely well designed building as a massive box. Its right next to One Liberty, which is a massive box, and from various angles it bookends the WTC site with 7WTC (box), or Goldman Sachs (massive box in silhouette). It adds a hell of a lot of balance to the downtown skyline. Just look at the contrast between black matte One Liberty and ultra glassy 4WTC (which was supposed to be matte silver--that was a well conceived detail), it gives One liberty something to play off of and makes it less of an dull black eyesore. Look at the skyline from the south east, the bloated Goldman Sachs building used to make the WTC skyline lopsided.

The glass is out of this world, making this easily my favourite of the 4 WTC towers. It looks like it is made out of chrome, but not in a tacky Vegas pimped up kinda way. It looks like a monolith from the future. Cant wait to see this one poke above all the other skyscrapers in FiDi!

W.T.C. Command Center alterations questioned (http://www.downtownexpress.com/?p=5177)
BY ALINE REYNOLDS
December 7, 2011

| The World Trade Center Command Center is moving its headquarters to W.T.C. Four, according to a recent announcement made by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and confirmed by the New York Police Department.

The decision, which Bloomberg announced at the annual World Trade Center press conference on Sept. 7, came as a surprise to Community Board 1 Chairperson Julie Menin during an interview this week.

“I don’t know why we weren’t notified — we asked to be notified,” said Menin.

Relocating the command center, now situated in Tribeca, to the W.T.C. site is a “questionable” move, she said. “I’d absolutely want to hear more from the Commissioner about this as to why it should be on the site itself. It has to be near the site, because it has to be proximate, but not [directly] on the site.”

Specifically, Menin fears that the command center could become a potential terrorist target if it is located at the redeveloped W.T.C. rather than in its vicinity — citing former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s widely criticized move to place the then-police command center at 7 W.T.C.

“When 9/11 happened, so many of the top commanders and officers at the site were out of communication with the rest of the field — that was a major issue,” said Menin.

Meanwhile, the command center, which has temporarily replaced the 1st Precinct horse stable on Ericsson Place, is now being scrutinized for what is considered to be potentially unlawful alterations to the building.

“We don’t think the [city Landmarks Preservation Commission] approved it,” said C.B. 1 Landmarks Committee Chair Roger Byrom. “So we sent an e-mail to the [Department of Buildings] and the L.P.C. saying, ‘Can you tell us what went wrong here.’”

L.P.C. Spokesperson Lisi de Bourbon said the commissioners are investigating the matter per the community’s request. “It’s a landmarked building,” she said. “We’re looking into whether a permit would be needed [to make renovations],” she said. “It’s not clear whether you needed one to begin with.”

C.B. 1 member Michael Connolly, president of the condominium at 27 North Moore Street, also raised the issue of noise and lights emanating from the newly constructed stairwell, which has purportedly been a disturbance to nearby residents.

“At the end of the day, I want the horses to come back,” said Connolly. “In the meantime, we need to address quality of life issues created by building a new staircase in the alley adjacent to the windows of a residential building.”

The nearby residents are outraged about it, said Connolly.

“They said, ‘how could this happen?’” noted Connolly.

The residents who complained weren’t available for comment as of press time.

Meanwhile, construction of W.T.C. 4 is well underway, according to Malcolm Williams, construction manager for Developer Silverstein Properties, who recently gave a tour of the tower to the Downtown Express.

Once fully built out, W.T.C. 4 will have a larger floor plate than does W.T.C. 7 but will share other features with its predecessor, such as a study, concrete core; massive, column-free floors; and floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the metropolitan area.

So far, the bottom half the building has been leased out: a quarter of it to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the other quarter to the city, which in addition to the first precinct will house the NYC Human Resources Administration. While office workers will enter the completed building on Greenwich Street, shoppers will access the building via Church Street, according to Williams.

As of late November, steel construction reached 56 stories, while construction of the tower’s outer curtain wall is 32 stories high. Workers are just beginning to install the building’s mechanical systems and elevators.

However the tower’s construction isn’t all that rosy. Williams and a team of engineers met with Liberty Street resident Howard and other local residents who recently expressed angst about pedestrian congestion caused by a sidewalk shed Silverstein erected last summer on the southern side of Liberty Street between Church and Greenwich Streets.

However, the engineers agreed with officials’ previous claims that nothing could be done to accelerate the speed of constructing W.T.C. 4’s southern façade — which, once finished, will eliminate the need for the sidewalk shed.

W.T.C. 3, also being handled by Silverstein, is now above grade by two levels. W.T.C. 2, whose foundations and basement levels will be built out by next September, is guaranteed only seven floors’ worth of financing by the Port Authority until the developer finds a 400,000-square-foot tenant (or approximately 10 floors) for the tower.

Um, why is there a steel column all by it's self, with about 5 others on the other end of the tower. I thought one end of the tower would not grow anymore?

JSsocal
Dec 13, 2011, 11:13 PM
The setback goes from the Southwest corner, to roughly the center of the north side of the tower. That column is one of two that will stick up in that corner, you'll notice it is set back several feet from the current column, and that is because of the setback
