Burj Dubai, Topped Out!
After 3 years of construction and at a final height of 818 Meters(2,684 Feet), Tower Dubai is a marvelous testament of human ingenuity.

I'm kinda bummed now. Topping out is somewhat anti-climatic, seeing how we've been waiting for three years of construction to finish.

How many years will the Burj hold that title?

I think the Burj will keep the title of the highest tower in the world during a long time because the only project which is supposed to be higher is the Nakheel Tower and it's "on hold" (a nice way to say "it's cancelled but we don't want to say it for the moment because people won't be happy").

Consequently, that tower will stay the highest in the world durin a very long time

CN Tower were never worlds tallest building as it is a TV-tower, a completely different structure.
Now let's see if this one can hold the title longer than the Sears Tower.

this thread is too long and hard to find the needed info on it.

on the 1st page, it says BD will have the fastest elevators in the world.

but how many elevators? Is there a diagram of elevators, number of elevators, etc?

Thank you very much.

sw5710
Jan 19, 2009, 8:54 PM
Thanks for the feedback on how long it will be the tallest . The burj is the worlds tallest structure. There are different kinds of structures as posted before this clears them all:banana: !

Almost forgot. I don't remember ever finding a page on any web page that has the elevators shown on it for the burj dubai.

Yes, unlike the Chicago Spire thread, where people give us the exact number of bolts used in the tower, the Burj thread doesn't have that much information. As a matter a fact, there isn't as much information on the internet that you would expect for a structure of this magnitude. Same for the Russia Tower...

Does anyone have any plans or drawings/info that show the heights of all the setbacks? I'd love to do a model of this thing out of Legos to go along with my other models of skyscrapers. Crazy. My model of the tallest building in Austin will be about 9 inches tall. A Burj Dubai model of that scale would be just over 38 inches tall.

Hi Kevin.

Look back 1 page - post 7187. Grab the zip with my BD Plan. It has all the tiers and level heights - and much more.

the topped-out Burj Dubai looks really fantastic! Is there a floor plan of Burj Dubai available, which says for what kind which floor will be used? What will be installed in the highest floors? An observation deck? A panorama restaurant? Broadcasting equipment? Equipment for radio monitoring? Will some floors of Burj Dubai used by military offices or by secret services, for example for monitoring radio telephones in Iran?

The KVLY mast held the record since 1963, with a gap in the middle while the Warsaw mast was up.
The BD will have to hold the record for another 4,400 years to pass the Great Pyramids run.

The Chicago Spire is easy. The number of bolts is zero.

And unlike the Great Pyramids, it wasn't built to last forever.

I just can't believe they did it.

They really did it.

My sentiments exactly.

This building is so tall and sleek that it really looks like the product of some CGI in a sci-fi movie set about 50 years in the future. It didn't just narrowly eclipse the previous record holder either (the way Petronas did over Sears), it ate it for breakfast and shit it out later.

Amazing.

As my hero Duke Nukem would say, "hail to the king, baby!"

Nakheel Tower is one, the other tower, One Dubai is the other.
None have officially been cancelled but Nakheel Tower has been put on hold. In fact nakheel seem to be in serious deep shit since they're putting on hold pretty much everything they have.
One dubai never started but I don't think the company behind it will even build one 20 storey building, never mind 200. :)

Wow! That lake is really shallow! I could go swimming in that! Why is it so shallow? Is the Bellagio lake even shallower?

Also, it would've been cool if they added a tunnel that lead to a dome in the middle of the lake and popped out so you could see the water fountain abode you and all around you! Or integrate the aquarium tanks within the lake [with the proper tools and conditions of course so the fish don't die] so you could see the Burj Dubai rising above you, slowly following the patterns of the waves...

PS: Amazing tower. Didn't like it at first cause I was jealous and thought of Dubai as cheap but I have to say I love this tower now. How ironic.

Amazing tower. Didn't like it at first cause I was jealous and thought of Dubai as cheap (snip)
For the longest time I've suspected this was the case for most of the people who scoffed at this project.

Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion yadda yadda and so on, but the hatred some people displayed in past versions of the BD construction threads towards this tower was almost... militant. As if this tower slandered someone's mother or something.

...but I have to say I love this tower now. How ironic.
:)

I've actually been indifferent, it was the height that impressed me more than anything--the design didn't seem all that great to me at first but now after seeing the Burj in recent photos reaching up into the clouds... it looks majestic and is in my opinion an excellent addition to the world of skyscrapers.

Hi,

What strikes me the most is not the wonderful architecture or the city planning, but the lack of people in the photographs.

Where IS everyone?

How are they going to fill that building???

Dubai’s Edifice Complex Is Falling on Hard Times

Commentary by William Pesek
Feb. 6, 2009

As construction cranes littering Dubai’s skyline go idle, it’s time to revisit that ever intriguing economic indicator: the Skyscraper Curse.

As this columnist has pointed out periodically, there’s an uncanny, if unscientific, correlation between financial crises and efforts to build the world’s tallest building. Look no further than Kuala Lumpur in 1997, Chicago in 1974, New York in 1930 and in biblical times with the Tower of Babel.

The human propensity for architectural overreach has been a surprisingly reliable omen......

Yes, but the photos I was commenting on (which don't seem to be up at the moment) had indoor mall shots. There was no one around. A Cinnabon shop was empty, escalators were empty. Disturbingly empty.

I am serious, who is supposed to fill up the Burj?

It's like Tampa, Florida: Everyone is driving. Seriously, there are great pictures of downtown Tampa with it's glass spires but you look on the streets and -- no one is around. People are around, of course, but they're not out walking on sidewalks and such. Everyone drives in from the suburbs and the ex-burbs and then drives out abruptly at the end of the work day.

The heat has something to do with it in Dubai's case but at the same time -- that is something that is surprising. Are things that sprawled out in Dubai that you can / should only drive from point A to point B?

I'm interested to see how they get the cranes down.

Most of the Dubai architecture is great. There's really nothing like it in the States. I don't liike the Chicago Spire (which is on hold). The Freedom Tower has turned into an ordinary, utilitarian design. It's nothing like the original, prize-winning design. Doing everything by committee has a definite down-side.

they are going to take the biggest crane down with the smaller one. then they install an even smaller crane which takes down the other one. after that they will take down the parts of the smallest crane in the elevator.
