No, apparently they are some of the world's ugliest buildings... Not attacking Dubai, but those are some really ass ugly buildings. Even though I like BD and several other prominent Dubai skyscrapers, there are a lot, like these, that suck eggs soooooo badly...

Ugly in the sense that they so blatantly steal from the world's most beautiful skyscraper (the Chrysler Building)? Then yes. And it's a damn shame too . . . BD is great but those who came up with the Al Kazim towers have absolutely no honor.

This might sound like a stupid question, but are they actually using camels to haul the materials to the site? Shouldn't this be considered animal cruelty? I couldn't imagine using Horses or Camels here in the U.S. to deliver 2000 pound beams to the Trump site or Chicago Spire.

Heh. No, they'll be using more powerfull carriers (like trucks and such) for those.

But there are still camels used in the desert surrounding Dubai, and they make for a hell of a powerfull contrast with the futuristic skyline. Which makes them popular to photograph.

Browsing through the several UAE threads here, you'll see camels popping up occasionally, and it always makes for nice pictures! :)

I was actually referring to that crap in the foreground in the last pic, sorry! I didn't see the twins before you said this and I agree, no honor in ripping off existing designs/buildings. Not to mention they aren't very attractive at their stubby height.

Already the tallest building in the world, the yet to be finished Burj Dubai, has been confirmed as the home to Armani's Residences in the Emirate. Armani Residences, a luxury collection of 144 private residences will be designed by Giorgio Armani, one of the world’s leading fashion icons.

Located on levels 9 to 16 of Burj Dubai, the Armani Residences complement the Armani Hotel Dubai also to be situated in the iconic tower. Several Armani Hotels and Armani Residences are being planned in the world’s most prominent international cities.

Giorgio Armani has lent his personal touch to each residence, conveying a sense of privacy and intimacy through the use of sophisticated colours, fabric, shapes and materials. “My objective has been to create personalised living environments, where the emphasis is placed on comfort, simplicity and elegance. Burj Dubai is a remarkable architectural achievement and provides the perfect setting for my first Armani Residences,” said Giorgio Armani.

“The Armani Hotel Dubai will be wonderfully complemented by these Residences, when it opens its doors in 2008 and together will represent the first destinations of many others to come, as we bring to life the vision of a unique worldwide collection of luxury Armani hotels, resorts and residences,” he added,

Giorgio Armani has been personally involved in every design detail for the new Armani Residences, which are highlighted by welcoming, harmonious spaces and sophisticated furnishings. The one and two-bedroom luxury residential suites range in size from 99 sq m (1,068 sq ft) to 208 sq m (2,237 sq ft), and are decorated with an exclusive range of Armani/Casa home furnishings. Clean lines, practicality and elegance are the cornerstones of the Armani/Casa collection with the materials and finishes chosen to include stone, zebrawood, Venetian plaster, fabric and leather wall coverings.

The homes with panels and rounded partitions to provide a new definition of space, feature spacious bedrooms that have luxuriously appointed bathrooms. Every detail is carefully considered and each element plays a precise role in the overall harmony of the environment. Highlighting smart-home technology, the residences have fully automated systems for security, temperature and drapery control, lighting, and air-conditioning.

The Armani Hotel Dubai will have 160 rooms and aims to offer the ultimate in hospitality standards. Residents at the Armani Residences can also enjoy the amenities offered by the hotel including concierge, 24-hour room service and housekeeping, access to facilities including a library, spa, gymnasium and swimming pool. They will also be able to take advantage of the lifestyle amenities within Burj Dubai including 15,000 sq ft of fitness facilities, four luxurious swimming pools, spa and cigar club.

Each floor of the Armani Residences has its own elevator access and front entrance lobby, assuring privacy and ease of access to residents. Full-glass panoramic windows provide spell-binding views across Downtown Burj Dubai, the AED 73 billion (US$20 billion) master-development that has Burj Dubai at its centre.

“The Armani Residences is not just another home in an iconic location. When buying an Armani Residence, one enters the Armani universe – marked by style, elegance and individuality,” said Marc Dardenne, Chief Executive Officer, Armani Hotels & Resorts LLC.

The cranes can only bring things up to the side of the building, now that the curtain wall is going up, many of the floors are not accessible by crane at all.

Lifting, for example, the paint up to floors 100-240 or whatever it is would probably take a straight week by crane. Then taking the empty buckets down would take just as long. Framing materials, drywall, light fixtures, would take 20x longer to lift up there by crane.

I'm sure they have some huge high-speed freight elevators running, question is how many and how do they work exactly?

I hated getting the my small amount of furniture up to the 4th floor on my place. Can you imagine the freight task that lies ahead to furnish floors 90+?

According to wikipedia the concrete core topped out on October 24th at 1,922 feet and all that is left to add is the spire. If this is true then the Chicago Spire will have the highest roof at 2,000 feet. Does anyone know anything about this?

Yes the concrete core topped out, but thats only to accommodate 200M plus steelwork before the spire.

First of all, there is no chance anything going up on any of these cranes is taking a week. At most it might take 5-10 minutes (purely guessing). In addition, it is my understanding that major materials (electrical, drywall, flooring, etc.) is installed at the same time the tower is going up. There are multiple elevator bays in the tower, including both passenger as well as freight, and I'm sure they are utilizing any of those that are currently functional, as well as the construction elevators on the exterior of the building. It sounds to me like you are misunderstanding the way in which a construction site operates.

Think about it like this, an average of 7 minutes carrying the load on the crane. 5 minutes loading, 20 minutes unloading (assuming everything is right there perfectly timed). It probably will lift 5-6 pallets of paint at a time, just enough for primer and paint on one floor. That comes out to 86.4 hours, two work weeks.

Even though they have crews working probably 20 hours a day, I'm just saying that even in an ideal world it would take quite a bit of time to lift something so simple as pain. The exterior elevators arent even big enough to lift anything like flooring or framing supplies. They must have some huge freight elevators running inside.

Its unreal how tall this looks from the pictures, I've obviously never seen anything like it. Seeing renders is one thing, but seeing the actual construction really puts the height of this is into perspective. It seems to go on and on, and impossible to gauge a quick floor count, like with most buildings. Im impressed.

And to think we're going to get something like this here in chi, I cant wait...

Currently at level 156 with concrete topped out and steelwork about to commence.

Well, I was under the impression that this was supposed to have at least 162 floors. Does this mean that it will only have 156?

/\

It will have at least 162 floors, but the top part will be made of steel not concrete.

The concrete part topped out after the 156th floor, from now on its steel. That was pretty much certain from the very beginning, because you experience lots of problems if you pump concrete that high.

Fantastic updates!
I will have to check this one out in person when it's completed. I'm starting to have problems wrapping my head around the size of this bastard.

Nor can I. The height is impressive, but the architecture just isn't my taste.

The cladding is looking good. Im glad it is starting to catch up to the structure somewhat. This was beginning to look like a naked skeleton!
Will we see the all-steel superstructure begin to rise again soon? Like it or not, this is one amazing project. :)

Nope , the first 40 odd floors purshaed by Armani and overlooking the lake wants it to be a green Puke colour 24/7 , since it will save alot of money when he throws halloween parties.

Yes GO UAE you are correct the Burj Lake is very green as you have observed since your last visit.

Anyway heres a pic showing the green puke, but I need to go now for my optician appointment.

Isn't that just the color the bottom of the pool is painted? I would be a little scared if that is the actual water color.

idkblk
Nov 21, 2007, 3:52 PM
As you might know water doesnt have any color at all...
The green puke came from dust, sand and other sediements in the water. But that sinks down to the ground after some time and you could see pictures of workers cleaning the ground...

What you now see is of course the color of the plastic layer that is on the ground added to the reflection of the color of the sky...
