One sexy way to post construction updates:

Already a very massive tower, I love it. it's also funny how they're starting the finishing work on the 2nd setback on the left without even finishing the first.

Probably about 166% taller based on that sign. (sorry about being a smartass :jester: )

But in all seriousness, I don't even think my senses know how to percieve something that is that tall and so much taller than anything we have ever seen.

Looks like 57 levels. The hole in the core is 40/41?

I would have thought the 4th setback would have started, but I guess they are going to keep going up.
The first setback looks to be almost done.

Contrary to what many of said, the Burj Dubai building itself is not a sustainable project. The only reason why it will ultimately be "sustainable" is because of the vast residential, hotel, entertainment and retail complex that is being built around it designed solely to make the numbers work. The sum-total amount of money made off of all of the individual components of this complex is what makes the tower itself economically feasible. The building is totally reliant on the much smaller buildings and features surrounding it. Without the other components though the Burj Dubai would be a literal cash blackhole. This is a fact. Check out this Forbes article.

^And without the Burj Dubai, those smaller buildings couldn't command a price premium for being located in the development which is home to the WTB...

Just like how anchor tenants in malls (like Macy's) get free rent, and then the mall's owner charges the small stores a premium for being near the anchor stores... Or how anything is worth more when it's near something desireable... It's commercial real estate 101...

Millenium Park in Chicago could be considered a financial black hole, certainly did cost enough.

But it is now a serious tourism draw, has spurned the development of several high profile condo buildings and is revitalizing an entire section of the Chicago Loop.

Same principal. Chicago's investment in Millenium Park was worth it, and the Burj Dubai investment will be worth it as well I'd imagine.

I agree... just pointing it out though. It is true that supertalls don't make much sense after a certain point. Elevators begin taking up so much ground floor space. But I'm sure it will ultimately end up being a smart financial decision once everything is working together.

I'm just wondering what will happen when this project no longer has the WTB title and loses its superior status and hype, which will eventually happen. I'm sure it will forever be a spectacular place to visit and spend your money, but as bigger and better things come down the pipe in Dubai, Burj Dubai won't have its "world's best" status to fall back on. And when that happens, I wonder if they can keep the all-important hype going. Unless they've already taken that into account and designed the project to sustain itself years after the buzz has worn out.

For some reason malec only wants to give us here at SSP the worst pic of the set, so here is one of the better ones of the actual tower, not a tiny shadow in the far distance:

I posted that pic in order to show it in the skyline, something which we haven't seen properly for ages. I think it's the best in the set btw. What's with you and SSC anyway? Why the hate and rivalry?

That's my 3d model (which I really have to start working on again, new towers to add). One of the towers is the burj al alam (world tower in english) at 484m and the other one, not much is known about it yet. All we have is a crappy render but we know it's 100 floors high and has a pretty massive spire.

^ If this is all your going to contribute out of the nice set you had to chose from, then you posted it in the wrong thread. This is for the tower. You started a huge thread in City Compilations that you never came back to. You also had a huge thread in M.E. section for this and I reminded you about it going into archive a few months ago. You brought it back out and explained that you were pissed about Al Bawadi for the reason not to maintain it. It won't be much longer before *flush* back to the archive it goes again, due to no updating. You might as well let it die a dignified death:(

It's not even in your sketchUp thread you started.

If I remember correctly, your guys update the tower regularly, yet if you don't post theirs, none would be posted here. Your last SSP update from them was the end of July. It has grown since then, but you post a sunset shadow shot from miles away. If you posted all of them, then yes, it would be one of the best. But when you link only this one (since July), then no, it is not.

The last two questions are easy.

Check out this page:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=71308&page=6

If this isn't a sign of unity and collectiveness, I don't know what is. Everything is consolidated in one spot for the viewrs ease and enjoyment of information on the next WTB. Believe it or not, SSC included! Where's your page with links to us? After all, we do have stuff that is unique here also.

You even said it yourself about your own forum:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showpost.php?p=2180314&postcount=111

So finally, the last two questions should be pointed at you and your buddies:

What's with you and SSC anyway? Why the hate and rivalry?

I noticed this long before I registered, so don't blame it on me.
Ever since you became a ssc mod a few weeks ago malec, you have changed. It would be nice to see the old malec again. ;)

Now, it wouldn't be worth contributing unless I had something to offer. I think at this time, I'll send a nice group hug photo in front of what we come here for

I wasn't thinking of that when I posted it, I said already that I wasn't trying to post an update of the tower but just to show how it looks so far in the skyline.

BTW, the reason why I haven't been posting is because I've been away for pretty much the whole of last month. Was playing with an orchestra for 3 weeks (one of which was in Finland) and then with another music group last week (came back yesterday).
I intend to finish the new compilation thread I started just before I went away. The one in the ME section is just a copy of the one I started at SSC though but I could update it if you want. What I'd really like to get back to though is the 3d model, I've been really lazy with that lately

Slugbelch,

What do you figure is the height right now?
I'm guessing about 250m, which means they're a third of the way done.
But they're also probably at least half way done by volume.

I'm guessing about 250m, which means they're a third of the way done.
But they're also probably at least half way done by volume.Official doc from Besix said an average level was 3.4884 back when it was at 150 meters.

It is at level 66 now, so it should be at 230.2344 meters (3.4884/level) 755.36 feet.

But I think it is between that number and yours. ;)

^Not necessarily, the 40th floor marker could be right at the top of the 40th floor, and the 42nd floor marker could be at the bottom of the 42nd, theres at least a 1 floor gap between the signs, they may have just been getting a bit out of line on the markers. It does intrigue me though, of all the floors to miss out why 41??

^Stunning image

Fabb, who's saying 160 floors or 189 is right?? I did the calculations a while back, and by no logic of missed numbers can you get to 189, i managed 165 175 or about 250 (removing all unlucky numbers from all societies, leaves very little). My personal belief is that there will be no floor skipping at all, and the 189th floor will be a very small staircase in the spire that isn't actually reachable by elevator. The 160 could well be the highest properly occupiable floor.... this is of course all speculation.

I stick with my prediction that this will be half a mile high, i'm not commiting myself to a number of floors at all though, there has been no documentatino to make me think that any of the figures people are throwing around are accurate. 160 floors is based on the original design of the tower, we know its undergone a redesign since this figure, and it refers to the 705m burj. 189 seem like showing off, even though it does appear on the official website. 800m seems pretty close to the truth based on reports from DOKA and other companies involved with the construction, but other than knowing that its over 154 we really dont know how many floors at all.

Arabtech says 162 floors at 808 meters total. 162 will be the highest real floor, which will house machinery and broadcast equipment. Anything above will not be complete floors.

I've always thought of the CN Tower as a solid shaft with elevators, so it seems pretty stable to me. But I know what you're saying.
