Imre,

Since you visit the Burj Dubai often, do you see many of these at the construction site?

Nope the bin ladin group aren't terrorists, they're a massive construction company, in fact they're building the abraj al bait in Mecca.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudi_Binladin_Group

Osama was connected to them but the family dissowned him.

This group bid for building the burj dubai but obviously having the name "binladin" associated with the world's tallest building wouldn't have been a good idea ;)

I received a doc showing many cranes on the BD mall are BLG and a few on the BD podium areas. I was curious if workers were numerous on the site or rarely seen.

They do however have close ties with Emmar--the Dubai based multinational(which is now in the education biz as well) developing Burj Dubai--incluing being part of a consortiom together. Some reports have suggested Emmar as attractive to them due to the near slave labor practices for it's construction workers. IMO, it doesn't take a great stretch of the imagination to see an irony in the fact that Osama Bin Laden's family is intertwined with the company which announced building the world's tallest shortly after he destroyed the twin towers in the US.

From ssc:
The last updates (yesterday) are still referring to 818m version....but V8 of the spire is due for approval tomorrow (4th August) this will be the final draught of the spire before constuction blueprints are finalized.
I've just read a developement from yesterdays spire fatigue testing...and the ensuing extra weld spots and bolt dimentions added to the latest design (V7) still has added an extra 18 tons without any other change to the height at all.
Not sure why this news wasn't posted here also :sly:

Yes, I think they've been given several road contracts.

A pic I took a couple of years ago when the Jumeirah Beach Road was a mess:
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/5439/binladinparkingxg2.jpg

The Bin Ladin Group were also involved in the expansion of the Grand Mosque of Mecca. They supply janitors and maintenance workers free of charge for work at the mosque.

A fuzzy pic of cleaning crew during prayers that I took a couple of years ago in Mecca. They're all wearing the same uniform as Imre's pic:

The cladding is progressing nicely. Love the glass so far, I think the building will look really spectacular when finished - not only due to the sheer height but also because the material used for the cladding seems to be of high quality.

I always thought they were the hanging posts for the suspended ceilings because the concrete slabs can't be drilled because of the strength of the matrix used....although I'm probably wrong!

Any clueless person, reading the "competence" of your post will take it for granted and belive as absolute truth everything you said.

- EMAAR does NOT have any relation with Bin Laden Group
- Bin Laden Group is NOT involved in the construction of Burj Dubai (they bid for it though), however they got the contract from Emaar for building a three highrises complex within the BD Downtown area.

Stick to facts please and not "news"paper articles.

From the pics that I have seen of Dubai, it seems like a veryugly city, compared to San Francisco or Portland. The Burj Dubai looks VERY out of place. I think Dubai needs a few more 2000+ ft tall buildings to make it look somewhat normal.

Remember Dubai is also what, less than 20 years old in the sense that we know it (since it really started to grow) - they are starting from scratch so it has to go from a sandy wasteland to a metropolis, which is no easy task!

From the Washington Post(link below):

"The Binladen Group is part of a consortium created to facilitate investment for the project and is headed by Emaar Properties, the company that has played a leading role in developing Dubai."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-adv/specialsales/spotlight/saudi/cities.html

The consortium was formed specifically for projects in KSA, not the Burj Dubai project, but I never claimed that--what I did say was that the two companies are part of a consortium. Two companies this large do not work on every project together, however they clearly have close ties. This second post of mine could have been avoided had you read more carefully and used a search engine.

I don't think it looks terribly out of place, also keep in mind that they have dozens of other tall structures under construction. The two cities you mention have been large cities for decades, and are ideal for greenery, unlike Dubai. The only ugly thing(based on the ridiciculous # of photos in this thread), has got to be the constant haze/dust/smog? that makes it dificult to see the skyline.

I said I almost did, meaning that I wanted, I considered, but decided not to.

It will be very difficult to see Burj Dubai imagge reflected in other skyscrapers since it is very far. I considered the reflection on the glass facade of a shopping centre on the other side of SZR, in front of which I have taken most of my updates.

AltinD, I like your pics of SZR from your apartment. They all show up with a big sign with my uncle's name :haha:

Dubai wasn't so dusty in the past. Now it's rare to find a good photo day.

Do you mean that building belong to your uncle or your uncle has the same name?

I dunno the building, but he has a shipping company carrying his name (God rest his soul), Saadi Shipping. That must be an ad or an office building or something. It's cool you got it in the photo with the Dubai skyline.

Damn - I think when all the major projects in dubai are done, it will be a beautiful city.
Especially if all the green(grass, flowers, trees etc.) and all the small rivers and so on are being made it will be the perfect turist city.

But I must agree with the most in here, at the moment, it just looks like a big construction site, but I really think when it's done, wow :D

A little request to the Dubai-people in here.
You think you can take some pictures of some of the finished places?
Like: http://shortlink.org/10926
and: http://shortlink.org/10927

I would appreciate it :)

And a little more on-topic...

I think when burj dubai get's build, and "glassed", it will be a piece of art.
It's not very often I like the windows/glass on skyskrapers but they have actually turned out pretty good in this case.

I have some Burj Dubai questions that I hope someone can answer.

How many basement floors does the Burj Dubai have? If I can remember correctly, when they were building it, there were less than 10 floors. How can this be? Isn't that dangerous for such a tall building?

Also, one of my goals in life is to climb the Burj Dubai from the bottom to the top. I would manage this by taking the stairs all the way. Will this even be possible? Will all floors connect to the stairwell and will I, being a tourist, have access to the stairs?

Thank you for your answers.

I believe 3 basement floors plus a half height floor below the concourse floor.

L1 is above that so there are 4.5 floors below L1 or what is described as building datum 0.000m which is 19.46m above the top of the foundation mat and 20.77m above sea level.

Absolute ground is 16.51m above Dubai Municipality Sea Level or 15.2m above zero datum (true ground level)

Zero datum (also referred to al Dubai Municipality Mean Ground Level) is measured as 1.31m above DM sea level and will be the point in which the building will be measured from for the final height.

EMAAR are giving height figures from last completed floor (not architechtural top of construction where the GPS nodes are found) down to the buildings specified datum (15.2m above zero datum) and is a false reading for the current height updates! ;)

Also I'm pretty sure there will be stairs pretty much all the way to the top....so for a real challenge I'll let you give me a piggy back all the way up there!

wow, the glass is just a wavy as TTC.

The glass is the most technologically advanced, most tested and most excellent design ever produced for a building. How this glass reflects light and how it's a major compositional element of the overall design is brilliant.
There is no wavyness.
You can be sure the Chico Spire will have nothing like this glass.
Not that you could tell anyways from looking at the renders

He meant that the giant graffiti that was on the concrete wall reading "India" has been covered over by the advancing wing height.
It's been shown with photographic reference even within the last few pages.

Hey Skytower, once in a while you need to repost this message so everybody can understand why your figures found in dubaimegaprojects are as such. Post this on that other site which I don't post anymore.

For the record, I fully stand by Skytower's height figures of Burj Dubai. It will be by his informative figure that BD will surpass the CN Tower as the world's tallest freestanding structure.

I believe the Chico Spire is being built in Mexico as we speak, the Developer "Gerreta Kellahergareta" is on site almost everyday from my understanding! There building is only 1,999 feet, and it don't even twist! Our Chicago Spire is 2,000 feet with tons of twists. Just thought I'd let ya know!:haha: ;)

Yeah, Especially 1500ft in the air.
However, those floors should go faster with panel installment than the lower floors due to much smaller floor size, resulting in less panels to install. As to the workers who are stretching their arms out to adjust the panels over an abyss, I don't think it really matters whether you are looking down 500 ft or 1500 ft.

1,000 pardons if this has been discussed previously in this thread but the thread is so lengthy I'd thought I'd just throw this out there and see if anyone bites. What is is the estimated construction cost of this tower in US dollars? Before anyone answers, let me throw out my guestimate: $2 Billion give or take a couple hundred million?
