You can't beat 2 for 1 specials. ;) Some of the skyline shots, you can see as many as 5 WTB in one pic.

I know it's unrelated but just wanted to post this.

At the moment the marina skyline's better I think, it looks beefier because it's more than just 2 rows of towers. If all goes to plan though the SZR one will take the title back in a few years when things start shaping up in the various projects there. What do you think?

Compare (pics by second to none, chose these because they're similar):

Marina:

^^ Yup. Right now the Burj is 67 floors and 260 meters, or about 1/3 of its projected 808 m height (which includes a large spire). Floorwise, it still has a little less than 100 to go (concrete).

Burj Dubai reaches level 70 (http://www.strategiy.com/realestatenew.asp?id=20060905104506)
Tuesday, September 5, 2006
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3714/burjqe0.jpg
Burj Dubai, the iconic super tower developed by Emaar Properties at the epicenter of its Downtown Burj Dubai, scaled 70 levels. Anchoring the 500-acre AED 73 billion (US$20 billion) mixed-use development, the super tower is billed to be the world’s tallest when completed on schedule in 2008.

The AED 3.673 billion (US$1 billion) Burj Dubai blends retail, commercial and residential spaces, and is a pioneering example of Dubai’s entrepreneurial vision, architectural capabilities and engineering prowess.

Burj Dubai is adding a new level every three days. Over 3,000 workers are working on-site. More than 200,000m³ (cubic metres) of high-quality concrete and 38,000 metric tons of steel rebar have been used so far in the construction.

Designed by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Burj Dubai is being constructed by South Korea’s high-rise construction experts Samsung Corporation, and Turner Construction International is the project and construction manager. “Burj Dubai is poised to become a global icon and engineering marvel, as it sets a new benchmark for architectural design. Drawing on inspiration from the hymenocalis, a desert flower, and patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture, Burj Dubai will be elegant in stature and dynamic in function,” said Emaar Properties Chairman Mr Mohamed Ali Alabbar.

Ongoing projects within Downtown Burj Dubai include The Old Town and Old Town Island, The Dubai Mall, Burj Dubai Business Hub, The Lofts, Burj Views, South Ridge, Burj Dubai Boulevard, The Residences and 8 Boulevard Walk. The development will be self-sustaining with a 24-hour lifestyle and a buzz that percolates right through the residential, retail, business, entertainment, leisure and dining facilities.

Very cool pictures, coming together well.

Only issue I have is there is no context or scale for the building, it is in a flat, wide-open space with a lot of tall buildings scattered around it.

Lets say, for example, this building was in San Francisco or Los Angeles - it would be a lot easier to see the sheer scale of the thing, you would have views of it from surrounding hills, etc.

I almost wonder if (gasp!) despite being huge, it will blend in too well.

We will see - or maybe you really need to be there to appreciate how big it is.

^ K R B,

That is what prompted me to ask about "iron (steel)" in a previous post. I know it's HUGE, but I get a somewhat skewed sense of perspective. I keep thinking that it looks on the small-side for what appears so massive in the renderings.

I was wondering if the concrete would be "filled-out" with steel (even along the lower portions of the structure).

Still... it's going to be something to behold as it grows skyward. (I want one!)

The burj itsself will always be a standalone tower, next to it will be a small lake and park of some sorts. The whole area around this is to be developed with loads of towers though including a few very tall ones. We'll have to see how much actually gets built.

They said they'd cover 60 floors in glass by the end of the year. I guess there must be some problem.

I guess they will do it.

It still boggles my mind that they're doing this tower for only $1 billion dollars (US)... I know they're saving money on labor, but the materials, design, construction management and other services should still cost comparable to a US project right? How much would something like this cost to do in America or Europe, 5 times as much?

Something just doesn't seem to add up.

^^^
NYC construction worker: $50/hour
Dubai construction worker $50/day

I think that adds up quite nicely.

Not only is the labor way cheeper, but you also have to take into account that the costs of raw materials in Dubai are way lower than the US because of the cost of oil alone. I mean a gallon of gas is what 20? 30? 50 cents? there, maybe less, not to mention its not just transit of materials they save on, energy is cheep, all mixed products (concrete for example) would be cheeper because of the labor savings as well.

WOW, only 1 billion!!!!!! Interesting, the General Motors building in NYC just sold not too long ago for 1.2 billion. Is it just me or does something not seem right?

malec

Most likely it'll go overbudget. 1bn is the figure from a few years ago isn't it? Since then the cost of materials have gone up, an extra 100m has been added, etc. Now the burj al alam nearby (a 1600ft high tower) is to cost 1bn.

Tuesday, October 3, 2006 - Burj Dubai Tower
Speaker: Larry Novak, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Chicago
Time & Place: 6:30 pm at ASCE Bechtel Conference Center (http://www.sea-mw.org/programs.php), Reston, VA

The design and construction of the Burj Dubai Tower
Lawrence Novak, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Chicago

At a height of 2,650 ft, the Burj Dubai Tower will be the tallest building on earth, surpassing the world's current tallest building, Taipei 101, by 983 ft!

When announced in early 2003, the Burj Dubai's design was the same as the 1,837 ft Melbourne Grollo Tower design. However, in May 2003 a new upward-spiral design by Skidmore Owings & Merrill was released and adopted. Ground breaking was in January 2004, and the building is scheduled to be opened on December 30, 2008.

Once completed, the concrete and steel Burj Dubai Tower will have 162 floors, 3.4 million sq. ft., an observation deck on the 124th floor, the fastest elevators in the world with a speed of 26 mph, a hotel, a shopping mall, offices, and luxury apartments.

Samsung teamed up with Belgium's Besix and local company Arabtec to outbid seven other groups for the construction contract of this $8 billion and 500-acre project in the United Arab Emirates.

Come to hear about the design and construction challenges of this amazing project.

Now some of my thoughts about the cladding.
The weather is very hot in Dubai right now, so it would be extreme hot inside the building with windows. I think they waiting for colder weather.

On another note... I too do not like the all the cloak and dagger crap with this tower. This is the structure of a lifetime being built, wish it was in North America, the information would be forthcoming and timely. Don,t get me wrong the pics and info coming from the guys in Dubai is great! But if the WTB was over here we would have pics and websites overflowing with good info-angles. Look at the Trump tower thread, beautiful close up shots with info from guys involved, imagine if it was the WTB, whoa.

Let me finish by slapping the Dubai guys [and others] on the back for a job well done, keep it coming.

I think there are many more people on this forum that live in the Chicago area than live in Dubai. Also, look at the size of the construction site at BD. Trump Chicago is a much smaller area of land. I can walk pretty close to Trump's building (and I have) but I couldn't do that with BD.

I read that article and this fellow claims this mythical 940m mark. That is a collosal 3083 ft. That is in step with the 950m foundation-supporting height.

The question would be if.....a) He knows something new that has just been released in the final design, b) He just misquoted what he really wanted to say, or c) He is just blowing smoke from Bin Laden's peace pipe.

Dubai based DEPA adds world's tallest building deal to its prosperous portfolio (http://www.ameinfo.com/96935.html)
United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, September 20 - 2006 at 15:35 GMT+4

DEPA has been commissioned to carry out the manufacture, supply, installation, construction and completion of the entire fit-out works for the 899 serviced and residential appartments, as well as their corridors, lift lobbies and the amenities levels.

The subcontract sum is close to AED 600,000,000. Depa has to deliver the works by end of December 2008.

Mr. Mohannad Sweid, CEO, DEPA United Group declared. 'We have recently started working on this project and are, as always, committed to delivering a high quality product for this unique mission.'

According to Sweid 'The Burj Dubai apartments will have beautiful interiors that will include high quality standard of finishes, meticulously selected to reflect the uniqueness of this project, all of which will be ready for progressive hand over in late 2008'.

......everybody (officially anyway) is still saying late '08. We'll see.........
