A) I can't see the pictures.:(

Fixed...

Brentwood's (Burnaby) new tallest is first of four Solo District towers.
http://vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/brentwood_keskustasta3.jpg

Metrotown (Burnaby) has three new towers entering its skyline. Much more to follow.

Love your pics Klazu, and it wont be long until Metrotown (or Brentwood!) become the most underrated skylines in Canada ;) (personally given how little attention and love it recieves vs. its amazing growth in height, beautiful silhouete, amazing backdrop, and perfect perch, it already is)

I like how much the escarpment snakes around Hamilton. I really need to properly visit the valley-ish portion of Stoney Creek. Good density and dramatic geography.

That's their new ALT, right? Or Group Germain? I forget what the branding is on that one. It wasn't there when I lived in the city, but they kept (if I understand correctly) part of the facade of the gorgeous old building that was in its place.

One of the best preservation/modernization projects I've ever seen. It looks fantastic.

Ahah ! I think that after visiting the whole thing, I will come to say : I still don't like it.... but I ''get it''. In the way of what it is supposed to remember (history & stuffs ) One thing I know is it's an iconic building of the city, love it or not, so it has to be visible aswell as a Landmark...

SignalHillHiker
Dec 21, 2014, 12:15 AM
Well, it was intentional - yes. There is a story behind the mess. But it's a rural story, not an urban one. It was supposed to be down by the water originally... but it was - and I kid you not - purposely moved to the top of the hill solely to diminish the Basilica. (Danny Williams was our first Premier FROM St. John's. You can't imagine what it was like from 1949 until the 2000s in a province where the capital voted overwhelmingly against joining Confederation, and rural, overwhelmingly Anglican areas, mostly for it. There was a lot of payback.).

So The Rooms, in its current location, is an Anglican shot across the bow against the appearance that Catholics dominate St. John's. On purpose. And, hilariously, officially opened by Danny. :haha:

ANYHOW, my point is... you won't "get it" from visiting St. John's. You'll get it if I take ya out into the middle of nowhere to fishing villages.

Oh and that's some crazy telephoto on the third picture. King Est and Richard street appear to be pretty close to each other while in reality it's very long car drive between the two. I think we can even see the summit of Owl's Head pop out in the distance.

I said Richard St. because I thought that the building we can see at the end of Prospect was on Richard St., but in fact it is on McGregor. The whole "extended" downtown (from Murray/du Cégep to Jaques-Cartier) fits between the building under construction in the foreground (3 or so km further than that to be exact, on the other side of the hill) and the red light we can see on Prospect, but nothing at all indicates that.

Very nice.
From that vantage point, Halifax looks like to be almost without parking lots except few ones.

Yes fortunately there are very few. Not few enough to suit me of course, but few nonetheless. ;)

They've really declined in number over the past few years. I wouldn't be surprised if 1/3-1/2 of the surface lots that existed 10 years ago downtown have since been built on.

The worst remaining ones, I think, are the Dennis Building and the parking on the northern end of the Province House grounds. There is a plan to fix all of that but I am not sure if or when it will happen. When that is done there won't be much surface parking at all north of Sackville Street downtown.

Not sure where the Dennis building is, but the parking lots that bother me the most are the one at the Victoria General on South Park (technically just outside downtown) and on the central waterfront near the ferry terminal. The South Park one is so damn big and the waterfront one is so conspicuous...

I would say that Victoria is the envy of most cities less than 1,000,000. Great density and quality looking buildings. Not to mention the water and mountains nearby. I know I would trade London's slab factory for Victoria any day.

In the first picture you can see a construction site to the left of the cibc building in Victoria, its practically done at this point and is about as tall as the cibc building. its a 15 story residential tower. its made a sizable change in what little skyline we have here in vic.

The black and white picture played with my mind at first glance... Tbought it was an old/historical picture for a second. There's also a proposal for a 15 or so storey low-income housing complex for the block before the last building on the left.

:haha: agreed. Perhaps the threads could be merged? Though I think both do serve a purpose.

If they were merged, I would hope that this one becomes "The Great Canadian Skyline Thread for CMAs and Suburbs under 1 Million" and the main skyline thread becomes "The Great Canadian Skyline Thread for Core Cities of CMAs over 1 million"... perhaps that would make things more cohesive? Or possibly less? Well who cares anyways :P

Upper-town Quebec city's elevation varies. 104m is the highest point (actually near the citadel )

See where is the Château Frontenac ? He actually sit between 50 and 60m above sea level. While the city's highest building, Édifice Marie-Guyart (On the left of the Delta hotel ) touch the ground around 90m.

Hence one thing is 100% sure : there is always a good vertical drop between Upper and lower town wherever you are.

Just try it, it's fun. You just need to pick a point where you want : http://www.daftlogic.com/sandbox-google-maps-find-altitude.htm

I decided to post the photos here because North Vancouver is a separate city, both officially and geographically, and this thread is more in line with the population. If it was still called Moodyville I bet there'd be less of a problem.

It really isn't anything anyone should be spending too much time thinking about.

It's a bit weird when it comes to the Lower Mainland. Some would call North Van a suburb, and indeed a lot of it feels suburban, yet there are neighbourhoods such as Lower Lonsdale that are very urban in nature. There are parts of Vancouver City Proper that feel very suburban by comparison.

Then you have municipalities such as New Westminster that have almost entirely urban characteristics. It just feels weird calling New West a suburb.

No, the name isn't the issue. This is for CMAs under 1 million, and the Vancouver CMA is well above that. It doesn't matter if the picture is of North Vancouver, Surrey, Port Moody, etc.

I think of a "suburb" as a municipality that is dependent on a core economically and culturally. I don't think built form is really relevant; I mean in an ideal world all suburbs would be as urban as New Westminster.

New West isn't any more urban than the City of North Van, which is separate from the District. The District is ultra-suburban and has banned high density development of any kind indefinitely on the eastern side. I think calling it the City of North Van really does a disservice to the city and creates a lot of ignorance, just like if New Westminster was called the City of Burnaby.

And I didn't notice there was a third thread for suburban skylines. My mistake.

The entire Niagara Region is very odd from an urban point of view.

A lot of different cities but no heart. It kind of makes you wonder why one particular city didn't dominate. They sort of just blend into one another and you never know exactly what city you are in.

There are certainly very nice areas and small towns and there is a lot of history but no real centre despite being bigger than Victoria. I guess Waterloo Region is very similar in that it is the conurbation of 5 different cities but there at least there are 2 major universities while Niagara only has smallish Brock. KWC also is fairly consistent in it's urban form as there are no real gaps between the cities unlike Niagara where there are little splices of land separating non-descript cities and towns.

In terms of urban form I don't think there is another area in the country quite like Niagara.

What's funny is that it's more generic in KWC whereas in Niagara, you can actually differentiate it's cities and towns from one another. Better yet, those in St. Kitts have an opinion of Welland..those in Welland have an opinion of Thorold..those in Niagara Falls have an opinion of St. Kitts..Ft. Erie etc. And then you have the small towns of Grimsby, Lincoln and the country bumpkins in the middle.

For the longest time, I wanted to move back after leaving college because it's such a loose and laidback "whatever goes" kind of area but unfortunately the jobs are incredibly scarce :/

The escarpment sticks out in Hamilton because it is essentially two plateaus with different elevations separated by a cliff. The escarpment in Quebec City is not as abrupt as the one in Hamilton but just as high:
