With that Speedy so prominent in it, the shot is almost as colorful as a typical St. John's view.

Plus, that Speedy building's a lot nicer than the Rooms, so bonus points there for Waterloo over its colorful rival.

Not the most flattering of angles, but point taken.

'Performance exhaust!' Yes, this is the world we've created.

It could be the most flattering angle in the world and the clutch of student apartment towers that have sprung up over the last few years would still be ugly as hell. The whole area really needs to be seen to appreciate how bad it is.

Some of the architecture I've seen in pictures of Kitchener, e.g, the City Hall, looks great. I've always thought that that building is fantastic. Seeing all these ugly buildings in this shot of Waterloo - a place with such a renowned university and business history among other things - just screams of the contempt of developers for people who actually live there.

The attitude of the money-grubbing people who put these things up doesn't really surprise me as they will invariably do this when they can get away with it. What is a disappointment is that cities - and this happens everywhere obviously but seems really badly the case in this picture - let them get away with it when they could demand better, and reflect the city better.

Waterloo has some wonderful architecture (CIGI, Cdn Clay and Glass Museum, Balsillie School, Perimeter Institute are all GG award winners), and the Uptown area has improved greatly, but the student ghetto in the Northdale neighbourhood is awful. New plans are in place that should lead to improvements over time and, hopefully, make for a more liveable neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, I heard from a reliable source just last week that one of the biggest obstacles to UofWaterloo's recruitment of world-class academic talent has become the sorry built environment of both the university (some good buildings but a cluttered, over-crowded campus that desperately needs a plan to pull it all together) and the City. If true, that's an issue with national implications, given the level at which UofW now operates.

Excellent points - and the fact that there are those great buildings demonstrates even more what a place like Waterloo could demand (especially in comparison to other places which I imagine are more desperate for development at any cost). I think developers often treat a place as it allows itself to be treated, living up or down to that. The resulting built environment then has very tangible consequences as you describe.

Remimds me of this used car lot taking up both sides of Jasper Ave in downtown Edmonton. Incredible how it sucks the soul right of that section of the city. Even when they're not being driven, cars are detrimental to a city's urban fabric.

The irony, if you are speaking of Waterloo, is that the problem is not that strip in the foreground, which is what you'd find in similar areas anywhere, but rather much of the high-rise development in the background (and you don't even want to know about the mid-rise garbage between those towers and the university).

It would look even more like a Soviet era commie block development if this picture had been taken in the dead of winter. :D

They're still better than single node middling Canadian cities.

Especially when the two main nodes, Downtown Kitchener and Uptown Waterloo, are practically in sight of each other.
There's few Canadian cities large enough to have nodes not visible from one another. The GTHA is a single urban zone and most of Toronto's built up zones are visible from Hamilton.

Aug 19, 2014, 10:03 PM
Vancouver is probably the only city where you can't see every node from at least one location. You can't see Surrey from Vancouver and vice-versa due to the topography.

In Thunder Bay, you can only see both main cores from lookouts on hills. If Port Arthur's downtown were a mile further north, even that wouldn't be possible.

Chadillaccc

You can see every node in Vancouver from the North Shore Mountains (Grouse, Cypress, ect.) but that's about it.

I understand what you mean, the back certainly isn't great. What about just the glassy front part? I personally really like it, and it makes the building overall a win, as does the incredible interior.

That makes sense, and people who like it may buy into Predock's concepts referencing nature - roots, cloud, mountain, etc. - more than those who hate it (obviously, I guess). Given that the glass isn't transparent as originally modelled, I tend to like the main cloud cladding on sunny days when it has a pure, pale sky blue colour, or when it reflects passing clouds and so on. The dark blue glass on the bottom part of the tower was questionable but I personally like the torch/beacon effect at night, at least. The ramps pictured above are actually very beautiful up close.

They've seriously been changing since late July, it's insane this year. We didn't have any leaves until mid-June and they're already something like 10% changed. We're not going to have anything left by the time fall actually gets here. We'll probably have a foot of snow by Halloween.

And Penticton is probably my favorite small city in Canada (climate and topography have a lot to do with that), but also it has a far more liberal attitude than Kelowna.

must be an old pic, no way the leaves have turned that much already, not with the summer they've had out west.

Here is a picture I took of Waterloo from behind the buildings in a car. Sorry if quality is bad I took it from my phone.

Oh, awesome. :D +10 points KW. I love a good, old, messy street grid.

Indeed, "interesting" to the point of being comical at times. I recently noticed that Highland Rd West and Victoria St South are parallel to each other, while Westmount Ave West crosses Highland Rd West at right angles! It all seems to have been laid out to confuse outsiders.

There is no camera in the world that could improve the visual quality of those buildings.

Kitchener-Waterloo seems to be moving towards a sea of towers.

There are plenty of towers, it's just that none of them are very tall...

So K-W is becoming a mini-Ottawa.

Not really. Perhaps a bit like a mini-Ottawa if Ottawa had no Centretown.

Sarcasm would imply I didn't seriously mean what I said. I believe you might find, by simply looking at the subject in the photograph, that I was quite serious in what I said.

Personally, I find that most of those buildings are pretty gross/ / disgusting, but the middle one, (http://luxewaterloo.ca/) with the handles, like Godzilla wanted to pick it up and walk away with it, is all right...
