It's closer to "a-bow-t" or "uh-bow-t" with bow being pronounced as it would in "take a bow" (not like "bow tie").

Yes, good comparison. Canadians and Americans make that same sound when we say "houses". For Americans, they are consistent when they say "house", but Canadians raise the dipthong, as they do with "about".

Apr 19, 2016, 5:03 PM
No, we actually say 'about' with the 'u'.

If you do pronounce the 'u' in a noticeable manner, then you pronounce it "abawht".

Pronouncing it "aboot" would be essentially skipping the 'u'.

... I'm going to have to pay attention next time I'm in Ontario to check if you guys are "aboot" or if you're instead "abawht". I'm curious now :P

both are pylons. At least in my vocabulary (hydro and construction pylons).

Nobody says Aboot. Everybody says "eh" or "aye".

Anglo Montrealers don't call these things "orange cones"?

Interesting -- so you'd agree you're pronouncing it "abowht"?

I seem to recall you guys make a big deal of the difference between Ontario and the US when it comes to 'o's versus 'a's (i.e. sarry vs sorry, etc.) so that might be why to your own ears there's a big difference...

kwoldtimer

Yup.

"Hein" or "han" is the francophone equivalent to the English Canadian "eh" or the American "huh".

Oh the fun we used to have with "hein" at school! Usually said with the nose scrunched up. (Cut me some slack, we were language nerds, not cool kids!).

No one who is not speaking Scots dialect says "aboot". No Canadian-born native speaker says, or has ever said, "aboot", except in jest. The aboot thing comes from Americans who can't pronounce "about" as Canadians do. That is all - it is their problem, no ours.

It's SORE-y (Canadian) vs SAW-ry ('Murcan).

Listen to Justin Beiber sing "Sorry" and you'll see that the Yanks have gotten to the Stratford native. Although they are certainly welcome to him.

So you'd say the Canadian pronounciation is about halfway between the exaggerated stereotypical Canadian "aboot" and the normal American "abawht"?

Out of curiosity, you'd pronounce "out" the same way as in "about"?

i.e. your "get out!" would be halfway between "get oot!" and "get awht!"?

Well, I'd dispute the "normal" wrt Americans, as I tend to consider them linguistically challenged.

But yes, about, out, doubt, clout, flout, stout, mouse, etc, etc are all pronounced the same way. Not all "ou"s are equal, however. In "bough" it sounds like "bow" in "take a bow". And then there's enough, where its a soft "u", like "stuff".

I don't know how well known this is in Winnipeg, but the media does make it out to be a very dangerous city where you could get jumped at any time. Same with Edmonton and to a lesser extent the Saskatchewan cities. Usually these claims are hyperbolic, but they have ingrained themselves into outside perception.

Well, anyway, it's no different than any other city. Just make a point of avoiding places that look like you'll get stabbed in and you probably won't get stabbed.

Yeah, have to agree it's a bit ridiculous to feel particularly paranoid in WPG. I mainly grew up there but was born in Ottawa, have lived in Vancouver (12 years), Toronto, Montreal (just a short time), Stockholm, and currently Paris, France.

There are rough areas, criminals, gangs, a-holes, poverty etc. in all these places - just with different backgrounds (obviously Paris has been hit by two major terrorist attacks in recent times - in ordinary places I've walked beside, knock on wood). I remember a gang-related shooting at a restaurant I would go by all the time in Kitsilano. My father lived in Washington, DC for a year and was warned at one street corner not to walk into a certain neighbourhood. So there are issues everywhere.

Glad you found the city interesting though - it definitely is, and stereotypes and lazy clichés perpetuated by some media outlets and members of the public are just that. It would be nice if all Canadians knew more about each other and the cool things across the country beyond some of those clichés.

And on the thread topic, I've come to appreciate some of the very cool things about the WPG skyline - not the least of which is the beautiful legislature and the unique CMHR.

Did I say I agreed? The question was why he felt unsafe, and I answered with a potential reason. I even said this was likely exaggerated in most cases. Never did I say it was accurate, or that it was my opinion. It comes up fairly often in the media, and I suggested that as a possible factor in people's behaviour in these cities. Nothing more.

I just find it to be so beautiful and underrated. I've always wanted to go.

Saint John has a lot of urban grit and character. If that's what you want, you won't be disappointed.

It has a wealth of late 19th century brick and masonry architecture with some strikingly preserved urban streetscapes - amongst the best on the continent.

On the other hand, the reason why the streetscapes are so well preserved is because there has been so little growth in the city in the last 60-80 years.

You'll also get to witness a lot of urban poverty. It might be shocking to some people........

lio45
Apr 21, 2016, 1:35 AM
With so many other cities (Halifax, Vancouver, Hamilton) busier than ever destroying their built heritage, it's possible that Saint John's stagnancy decades will end up making it pretty special on a country level.

For core homogeneity, in particular.

Sorry but you were being rediculous. I guess I should be on guard when walking the mean streets of Hamilton, based on what kind of reputation it has as well.
I go by statistics, not reputation. Hamilton has a rough reputation, but is actually very safe when you look at the numbers. Winnipeg has the crime rate to back that reputation.

Dude you're from Thunder Bay. We can easily get away with calling ourselves "Minipeg, Microtoba". If you don't feel uneasy in Port Arthur then you'll find the Exchange absolutely charming by comparison.
In that case it's more knowledge. In Port Arthur I know which areas to avoid, whereas in Winnipeg I was wandering pretty much blind (so basically the next step up from visiting Fort William which I sort of know).

Also I'm from Hamilton. Thunder Bayers are a very special breed of people, I've not spent enough of my life there to truly fit in.:haha:

It wasn't just crime worries anyways, I had a bus to catch at the end of the day and the bus station is way out at the airport, so I was worried about time and the risk of getting lost. It was the first leg of my whirlwind tour of Western Canda, missing the bus there would have been a lot more of an expense issue than say doing so in Edmonton would have been. And all the other bus stations were in easier to reach locals.

A view of downtown Fredericton from across the Saint John River. River is high, but still well below the flood stage.

At the far right is a new apartment building still under construction that will be one of the tallest in the city when complete. It's around the same size as TD Tower which is the big building with the green room mid-left, just beside the clock tower that looks taller than everything but is actually shorter than them. The NB Power building (which I believe is the current tallest or top 3 at least) is barely seen as the white spot to the right of the light pole in the centre.

Saint John gives off a bit of an American vibe in that photo... looks like it could be in upstate NY. The freeway off ramp leading into downtown seals the deal in that regard.

Great regina shots.

Windsor has great potential, but it looks sore right now.

Windsor is doing much better now than it has in over a decade, with lower unemployment, a very robust housing market and much improved infrastructure, so it's making progress slowly. I'm hoping the ciy is truly on the verge of a sustained boom, much like Detroit is starting to see. I really think the two cities have so much potential, and are primed for an urban renaissance!

Having a harbour/waterfront really is a great feature for a city, especially when there is a bit of a rise as you go further inland; Victoria, St. John's, and Halifax especially benefit from that (Saguenay too from the photo in this thread).

Here were two other images posted in the Regina thread recently. One is a winter night shot, and one is an aerial down one of the main streets (Albert Street) that gives a good perspective of the tree-lined streets and most of the downtown area:

Credit on photo

Here is another from the same guy. A different angle for the skyline. His Facebook page is nearly all cars with the odd skyline thrown in.

I do have one sour memory for Regina. I saw a bunch of signs for 'the Warehouse District' and thought it was like Regina's version of 'the Exchange' or something. Turned out that apart for like 5 nice historic buildings it was mostly 1 story modern(ish) warehouses...

This is probably the best angle to observe Shawinigan. You see La Cité de l'Énergie (the 115m. tower) and two of the main churches : Saint-Marc and Saint-Pierre.
