I tend to agree, but I think the folks living in those towers like the "cachet" of saying they live in Uptown. "Midtown" doesn't seem to have any legs yet.

Nobody minds living in midtown Manhattan. :)

Well, it’s not upper east side ...

In K-W’s case, “Midtown” remains a bit of a fiction - many people would not know where you lived if you said Midtown. It does make sense as the label for the strip between DTK and UTW, however, so maybe it will become standard.

It's interesting how these things evolve. KCI was definitely known as a 'downtown' school a million years ago, even though it's closer to Waterloo than the 'official' downtown limits.

1960.

Waterloo still doesn’t have a hospital.

Why would they need a hospital when Midtown has all of their hospital needs covered (except cardiac care)?*

I'm obviously not talking about a world where there is one high school and Waterloo is a growing town of about 20,000 people with a brand new university and a dream. The people I knew who lived out in the suburbs several decades later did think of KCI as a downtown school that was barely acceptable because it had a French immersion program, and the term 'midtown' would have never have crossed their minds.

Edit: That picture of Kelowna is spectacular. Maybe KW can enhance Mt. Trashmore to get some better scenery.

*please don't think that I'm being serious

Thanks for sharing GS! The first picture gives a good overall perspective; the others were the large zoom makes buildings seem like neighbours even though there are twenty minute walk apart, lol.

Small to mid-sized cities are tough to capture at a distance with so many buildings being of a similar size and the colours end up being muted so everything looks similar. I guess this is one reason why you’re always wanting every building to be TALLER! :D

Here’s an older shot of the skyline from in close - fun to make out the buildings that you captured in your shots.

Man the Save on Food Memorial just looks like a great block of concrete haha

Well, when you can only see the roof from several miles away through a telephoto lens, I can see how you might come to that conclusion.

While it’s no looker, that’s for sure, it’s typical of it’s size and budget - a 7006 seat arena for hockey (9,000 for concerts) completed in 2005 for only 40 million - I think nowadays you’d need to shell out 100 million for the same. Has a restaurant, box suites, the typical stuff. Inside shot from Venue Coalition (https://venuecoalition.com/save-on-foods-memorial-centre/):

https://venuecoalition.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Save-on-Foods-Memorial-Centre-Victoria-BC-Main-Photo.jpg

Exterior shot from Victoria Buzz:

And one more:

https://www.gslholdings.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/SOFMC.jpg

Unfortunate long standing naming rights makes it look like a giant grocery store, lol - but what’s even funnier is how this building from the outside looks similar to the arena your Saint John Sea Dogs play in, the older 6,300 seat TD Station. Picture from Wikipedia:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/TD_Station_-_Outside.jpg

Looking forward one day to new arenas in both cities.

Now back to skylines, and oldie but a goodie:

I had my first chance to attend an event, a Victoria Royals WHL game, at SOFMC back in March. It's an interesting building. It's a fairly large scale arena and it looks impressive from the outside, at first glance it almost looks like it could pass for a late 80s/early 90s NHL rink. But when you go in, it feels more like a small town kind of community rink, like a slightly bigger version of the Keystone Centre in Brandon. It's surprisingly basic in there. But it is appropriate for Victoria's needs.

As for TD Station, I've enjoyed the glamour shots on TSN of that facility and the Saint John skyline while the Memorial Cup has been going on.

/\The box suites are nice, but you're right - it's as if they forgot to add extra touches, in particular around the walls of the upper section.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a new arena in a decade or two in the western communities in Victoria. There is no political or even community support for arena/stadium facilities in the core, but there is where there are younger families.

Man the Save on Food Memorial just looks like a great block of concrete haha

Nothing a good pressure washing won't fix.

Looking at some arena's from google maps recently the last few months I noticed that most arena roofs look largely the same, gentle slope and almost always white which anyone with a white car knows is hard to keep clean.

I recently went to Cirque Du Soleil's OVO but didn't take notice of the roof, I'm going to Greta Van Fleet concert in August, slightly bigger arena but looking at the pic in the thread last page, it's again a white gently sloping roof as well. :sly:

the biggest thing working against Windsor's skyline is the fact that Detroit's skyline is right across the bridge overpowering it... otherwise it's pretty decent. Could use a little more clustering and a taller tower in there. One of my pet peeves of some Canadian skylines is how spread out they are. ... those London pics also an example.

London is “improving” its density, but all around Richmond Row everything is getting put close together its hard to get good angles when half the buildings are blocked out

True, I’m betting on it having a development boom soon. I mean the Tri Cities have had a larger metro pop than London for a while and they had essentially zero skyline until just a handfull of years ago

There are many high rises London has that cannot be seen from that vantage point.

Yeah thats what sucks about taking pics of London’s skyline. Theres practically no good vantage points, its basically essential to have a drone to get the good shots

Stopped in Saint John for the first time in over 10 years. Was not disappointed with what I saw!
The approach entering the city is quite impressive.

St. John is pitifully underrrated, as those photographs can readily testify. Amazing how such a small, industrial, slow-growing city is packed with a treasure trove of 1800s brick architecture.
Perhaps outdone only by Montreal and QC (and maybe, Trois Rivieres). Winnipeg has its great exchange district, but I believe that dates from the early 1900s, as does Gastown, and much of what remains of the old Toronto.

It seems like such a concentration of the buildings. I've only driven through part of Saint John (and not the core, but the highway skirting it all, after taking the ferry from Digby NS) but clearly it deserves a day-long walkabout.

A number of those old gals look like they can use a bit of sprucing up. Has that been happening? Are they generally in good condition inside, such that the outsides aren't much of a worry? Here in Hamilton we continue to see similarly scaled buildings getting makeovers, but in many cases the innards have to be gutted as part of the process and the latest redevelopments tend to have modern additions.

Ya those old red bricks look like they have smoke damage or something. Hopefully just a pressure wash would do the trick.
And they even put bricks on the street? Definitely the red brick capital of Canada!
Around here red brick is just for the "old firehall" type of buildings but not all over town. Not used to that much red brick.

Sarnia always really surprises me given how small it is, less than 100k people in the CA and a long, largely depressed local economy and it still manages to have a dozen or so significant highrises.

Yep. High rises built post 2000. It's not just Sarnia either. It's all from two developers each spending $50 million a year building rentals and condos all across Southern Ontario for the last 20 years.

London's building a ton of downtown apartments now as well, which it has largely been lacking until now, at least in the immediate core.

London definitely has a few development U/C and proposed that are exciting for the core. Looking forward to visiting in a bit and seeing the difference.

Between what's going on there, in KWC, and Hamilton it feels like SW Ontario is very much on the urbanizing up these days. Great to see as a whole.

exactly my thoughts. SW Ontario could soon have a triangle of bustling mid-sized cities, all around the same size, within an hour or so of each other, particularly if these construction trends continue. Downtown Kitchener has already been basically completely transformed from a decade ago and London and Hamilton seem to be following.

Now if London could just get itself an LRT to match and the cities could be connected by some actually decent public transit.

Obviously Edmonton has a superior skyline to London but the view may look nice but it's what's on the ground that counts.

Edmonton's downtown doesn't have a solid block of a complete street which is why it is so isolating and sterile from a pedestrian and walkability perspective.

Everyone has their favorite and least favorite city and for me, Edmonton is my least favorite city over 200,000 in the whole country.

Drewlo and Tricar are active in the larger markets like London but, also places like Sarnia, Guelph and, Woodstock, etc.

The largest developer in Waterloo's student districts sold off the units as condos. London's building are rental tenure but, nearly all are registered condominiums. I wonder why?

One should strive to be as impartial as possible especially in a place like SSP. I totally agree what's on the ground counts more than skyline. The two short blocks of heritage on Dundas do not represent Downtown London.

I was in Hamilton yesterday walking around downtown - did I see a giant lineup for free food/bank? There was also some Alice in Wonderland weird thing going on with everyone walking around staring at their phones. Anyway, I got a kind of Edmonton vibe in Hamilton: edgy, gritty downtown with a lot of homeless/poverty, plenty of parking lots and ugly new condo towers going up.

A few weeks ago, I was thinking Calgary could be Mississauga + KW lol.

By my reckoning, by 2030 we should have two more towers in the 20 storey range downtown, two towers of 15 storeys, a 12 storey tower and two more 9 storey towers. These are the projects I am aware of. There are probably others.

Rimouski looking great as always! Good density with a nice mix of styles there.

Moncton - I can see it having more than that by 2030. I guess it’ll depend on the uptake of what’s being built and do people want to live in apartments or condos to that degree.

Oh, I can definitely see it having more than that too. I was being conservative. In particular there is a major downtown renewal project afoot for the lands behind Assumption Place and along Downing Street that will include a complete redesign of the street grid in the area. There is a single private developer involved in this project as well as the city and the province. Only the most basic conceptual drawings are currently available, but the infrastructure for this project will start next year. There are rumours of 6-8 new buildings here alone between 10-20 storeys in height. I didn't include most of this. This would boost my estimate substantially.

/\ nice! Can’t wait to see Moncton transform like that. It has a decent main street and better bones (argh.. I hate that term, yet I’m using it) than people give it credit for. Was really impressed by the city when I visited - sure I fell in love with Saint John, but Moncton felt like a humble ‘can do’ city without any pretension. Friendly genuine and helpful folks everywhere who know what they were doing - nice to see.

Won’t be in my life time, maybe no one’s but how cool would it be to have three cities in NB with a population of 200,000 plus each. Well, ideally 4 to 5 hundred thousand, that’s a nice sweet spot. That would really put NB on the tourist map more than it is already, and add in a short bridge trip to PEI!

Hamilton has improved a lot from when I lived there back in 2000. James St. North has so many new/newer businesses. Back then it seemed like it was the Portuguese community alone holding that street together.

Definitely exciting times with multiple condo/apt projects going on at once. The city will be more vibrant in the next few years.
