I wish Saint John would do something with their waterfront; aside from that, pic number two is the best skyline shot I have seen of that city.

I think most Saint Johners are frustrated with the glacial pace of waterfront redevelopment in the city. Unfortunately, most of the land (including Long Wharf, the paved area in the foreground of pic #2) is owned by the Port Authority, whose mandate makes them notoriously resistant to transitioning even severely underutilized sites away from industrial/marine terminal-type uses.

There is some hope though. Pretty much every SJ SSPer is waiting with baited breath for the next announcement concerning the mixed-use redevelopment of the Coast Guard Site (http://www.sjwaterfront.com/fundy-quay-development.html), pictured below:

Yeah that angle definitely makes the city look bigger.

That's an interesting part of Winnipeg. The buildings along the right are mostly full of African immigrants, and the building it's taken from is largely Filipino.

Come to think of it, I really could go for a big poutine and a couple of all-dressed steamies. They just don't make 'em that way in Ontario. Belle-Pro is Ok, but I prefer Lafleur's.

God I love that Scotiabank building in St. John's. Great photos! Had a good laugh at the strip club. When I was there in the summer, it seemed there was a strip club on every block downtown.

SignalHillHiker
Jan 29, 2015, 1:47 AM
There probably was, then (female strip clubs are not my area of expertise in this city, as you can imagine). But I do know the Crazy Horse has closed, though, so there's none on the east end of Water Street (up toward Signal Hill) any more.

The strippers are almost all from Montreal. The clubs own a rowhouse or two here and there where the girls are shacked like a school dorm while they're on rotation here. Always lots of scantily-clad women outside and fights and police. And it's always just one random house in an otherwise completely normal neighbourhood.

It's one of those things you grow up seeing but not understanding. Like men wearing women's clothing and just standing on Long's Hill.

You see it as a child and it's just... why? Then you grow up and it's... OMG...

And, the old saying, "The first three buildings in this fair city were a church, a bar, and a whorehouse, and they've added nothing other than more since."

Sirens even has naked Screech Ins performed by the aforementioned Montreal strippers. So if you want a naked woman with a French accent to make you kiss a raw codfish while trying to get you to repeat lines she can't even pronounce herself, you know where to go.

*****

RE: Scotiabank. Yeah, we lucked out with our 1980s towers. Scotia Bank and the Cabot Place Complex (the pink and blue "twin" "towers") are aging pretty well. Much better than our 1970s buildings.

No I'm not. I've been on this page for a few years, there's not much I can do to change that. Theres just not much interest in Windsor, it's part of the reason I slowed down on posting, it kind of feels like what's the point?

It's a hard city to photograph because we don't have many vantage points to take photos, the city looks rather dated and hasn't changed much so the same types of photos kind of get recycled. We're a little forgotten at times with the exception of the parkway thread.

It's true there's not too much construction going on in Windsor right now, but I am an optimist and see a bright future for the city. Construction will pick up as employment levels rise. DT is changing slowly with the new UW campuses, St. Clair College DT campuses, new City Hall and other smaller investments and changes. Detroits rise will also lift us up in the process, hopefully creating two new dynamic city cores across the river from each other that are even more interconnected!

I have a friend from Strathroy. Her name is Kelly. Yes, Woodstock is terrible. A horribly conservative fuckhole. One of the worst cities in the country to grow up gay especially. Happy to say that the Gay Straight Alliance I helped set up at my old High School has led to every HS in the city having one, so at least there's progress :)

I agree about London. My partner (who had never been there even though he's from Kitchener) and I went there for a day this past summer, he was shocked at how large and urban it felt. Both of us commented that it is a city that both of us could live in. It just has this awesome grit, location, and some little known parks that make me nostalgic at the very though of them (Sifton Bogg for example). London is basically what you get if Winnipeg and Hamilton had baby.

Not even close.

The Forest City nickname goes back to the city's founding.

London was not on a major navigable river {hence it never had any heavy industry and became a wealthy little white collar town} and the closest point of water entry was Port Stanley. In other words, as far as travel went, it was a bitch to get at.

The area around it was not cleared at all and it was still virgin land. In other words getting to London from many points required going thru wooded {forested} areas and hence The Forest City.

London certainly became green with many parks especially near the downtown as there was no industry in the city or port on the Thames so the name stuck.
London was one of the first cities in NA to have a tree by-law that greatly restricted the tearing down of trees and dates back to the late 1800s.

All of these things have left the city well endowed with parks, tree lined streets and a green canopy that helps make the city so pleasant. Londoners still take their trees VERY seriously.

That's what we were taught in history class. Kingston was scrapped because it was too easy for Americans to access, so a new location was chosen. You'll notice London is pretty much smack-dab in the middle of the southern Ontario peninsula (I don't know what it's called) pretty much equally distant from the various Great Lakes. However, eventually people realised that its military protection did not make up for its, relatively huge at the time, isolation.

I've never heard the rational of London growing due to being away from the US border theory. London was, of course, pushed as the nation's capitol and hence it's name. this was especially espoused by Thomas Talbot who was one of the main explorers of the region hence Talbot Road in London and the town of Talbotville.

The lack of industry in the city is what helped it to become a centre for old wealth and why Western has always been considered one of Canada's most elitist schools and one of the 4 schools where the rich from Rosedale and Westmount would sent their kids to mingle with the "right" people along with McGill, U of T., and Queen's.

Later has the railways came London grew due to it's strategic position as a regional hub and this was later fortified by the development of roads.

I'm not saying that's why it grew, but that's why it was built where it was. It grew because, like you said, it was supposed to be the nation's capital.

Halifax from Eastern Passage with a strong zoom lens. The two cranes on the left are in the North End, a few kilometres behind the downtown. The lifting jib crane is on its way down; the TD tower is nearly done. The shorter white crane (just to the right of the yellow crane; harder to see) is for the Maple condos. It's going have to be jacked up. That building will be about the same height as the taller office buildings like TD or 1801 Hollis. They are all about the same height because of height restrictions.

From my understanding, London was never intended as the National Capital, rather, it was laid out as the intended Capital of Upper Canada (Ontario).

The current location of London was selected as the site of the future capital of Upper Canada in 1793 by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe. Simcoe intended to name the settlement Georgina, in honour of King George III, and renamed the river. However, the choice of a capital site in the midst of extensive hardwood forests was rejected by Guy Carleton (Governor Dorchester). In 1814, there was a skirmish during the War of 1812 in what is now southwest London at Reservoir Hill, formerly Hungerford Hill.

The village of London, named after the English capital of London, was not founded until 1826, and not as the capital Simcoe envisioned. Rather, it was an administrative seat for the area west of the actual capital, York (now Toronto). Locally, it was part of the Talbot Settlement, named for Colonel Thomas Talbot, the chief coloniser of the area, who oversaw the land surveying and built the first government buildings for the administration of the Western Ontario peninsular region. Together with the rest of Southwestern Ontario, the village benefited from Talbot's provisions, not only for building and maintaining roads, but also for assignment of access priorities to main routes to productive land.At the time, Crown and clergy reserves were receiving preference in the rest of Ontario.

A nice summer picture of Regina (minus a few recent towers).

Someone should photoshop Le Phare into that Quebec City pano.

I think it would have looked much better there then in Ste-Foy.

What is the building with the columns in the QC shot? I don't recognize it.

It is the New Custom House, a weird name considering it was built in 1860. The dome of the building used to be different and water reached the stairs in front as you can see here:

The surrounding of the Custom House has changed a lot since then. An agora has been developped and shows are presented there in the summer...in a particulalrly beautiful setting:

Thank you! I know it's been a few years since my last visit to Quebec City, but I seem to have no recollection of that lovely building.

That photo of Brandon looks to be from about 1979-80, give or take a couple of years. Sadly the wooden grain elevators are mostly, if not all gone.

It's amazing how the wooden grain elevator went from being totally ubiquitous 30-odd years ago (literally every speck-on-a-map town had at least one) to a rare sight these days. I miss seeing them on the horizon all over the prairies.

Here's the "elevator row" from Inglis, Manitoba. You used to see lineups like this in a lot of towns, right up into the 90s. These days they have all but disappeared... the row in Inglis is preserved because it's now a National Historic Site. These ones are pretty old... many wooden elevators would have been a fair bit taller than these. They really dominated the flat prairie skylines!
