Definitely Canada's second best natural setting of a city.

That's one we don't see much.

Is that where Martin Mystery was, or was he in Sherbrooke?

He was in Sherbrooke, so I believe that makes him our city's greatest ambassador.

Gorgeous 3R picture. I haven't see. Many overhead views of that city's core. Lots of impressive street-level shots though. You can really see the age.

The downtown core would deserve a photo thread or at least a bunch of pics... I'm there super often, just never think of doing that. Will try...

In honour of Red Deer surpassing a population of 100 000, I thought I'd post one of the best shots I've ever taken of the city, taken a couple months ago. Not bad for a municipality of only 101 000 if you really look at it ;)

A great collection of shots, Chadillaccc.

BC has a lot of potentially good skylines, but it's going to take a loooooong time before we see any major improvements. Outside of Vancouver and Victoria, BC cities have a really hard time getting their proposals off of the ground.

A few years ago, some low-rise condos were built between King Street and the lake, immediately west of downtown. In the distant background, our former landfill site (which will eventually become a park) can be seen.

That pic is several years old. See the two brown 'commie blocks' with a steeple between them (in the middle, roughly)?

They're in the middle part of the pic below, on the extreme left side, near the building with the white tower crane (which has now been finished for a while). A couple other buildings have popped up that should be visible in that view from the East (like the red brick one in the middle of the pic below).

What's even worse is that St. Catharines is a city of 130 000 in a metro of over 400 000, while BC's 100 - 200 000 cities are basically just that. Abbotsford being the outlier in the skyline department.

I think the tallest building in downtown Peterborough is actually 16 floors. Peterborough has a modest skyline of maybe half a dozen hi-rises downtown, most of them are residential.

Yeah, but St. Catherine's metro includes Niagara Falls, so they let someone else handle the heigh. Plus I'm sure if you dragged over the highrises scattered about the Niagara Region CMA you'd probably pull together a decent skyline. It's just that the whole thing is a mess of small towns that sort of mesh together, with no real unified downtown or anything.

That's a wierd view of SJ, not including Brunswick Square or Irving Centre, only having City Hall, Harborside Condos and the edge of the Delta.

This is better:

Well, kind of. But it's more cut off by its geographic layout than anything. It's on a peninsula like Halifax (although a much smaller peninsula, maybe 1/3 the size) with a little bit of older stuff off the peninsula, mainly across the harbour. The main highway basically runs across the isthmus cutting off the 4th side, when 3 sides were already cut off by water.

In a way I kind of like it, because it feels like the city is more separated from the souless suburban stuff and makes it seem like an island of solid urbanity, letting a person forget that the other stuff even exists. Although perhaps the suburban areas are less dense and more poorly laid out than if they had grown more as a direct extension of the main city.

Although perhaps the suburban areas are less dense and more poorly laid out than if they had grown more as a direct extension of the main city.

Even in the 1800's the city spilled off of the peninsula. The first bridge across to the Carleton side dated to the 1850's. My impression is that the parts of the city north of Union (North End, formerly Portland) were fairly built up before 1900 was well but that they have been decimated by slum clearance, and urban renewal. Somebody from SJ probably is probably much for familiar with that than I am. Here's an old picture of Main Street, just off the peninsula:

http://www3.sympatico.ca/iwmac/Main_Street_with_Hospital.jpg
Source (http://www3.sympatico.ca/iwmac)

The size difference between Uptown SJ and peninsular Halifax is actually much bigger than 3:1. It's maybe more like 20:1 if you look on Google Maps? Uptown SJ is a little bigger than Point Pleasant Park.

I think Halifax would have been a bit more interesting had the peninsula been a bit smaller or, conversely, had the city grown to fill in its geography a bit more. Even SJ didn't quite do that but it is farther along. The sense of land in peninsular Halifax being scarce and the pressure to built higher density buildings didn't really happen until recently. Similarly the areas around the harbour and basin are only now being built up.

Unlike this place, where there was land pressure a long time ago:

Well yes, but it just seems like it would have been much easier to expand the walls than to build such tall buildings during that era. But I could be wrong of course.

The big downside with that idea is that the density of available defenders to man that wall during attacks decreases as the perimeter increases. That's likely why they chose (after weighing pros and cons) in the end to keep the wall as tight as possible, and build up instead.

They should put a pedestrian walkway on this thing. Instant tourist attraction. After all, how many people visit the Kettle Valley trestles. This thing should be better known across the country. Its always great when engineering is as potent as architecture. For all its qualities, Erikson's University of Lethbridge pales against the power of this structure. Always a favorite.

Holy 'shit in my pants' telephoto. I can only guess this is the Olympics in Washington. I have never seen a photo of Victoria like this one. The peak is amazingly clear. Its almost freakish, especially considering that, away from the south facing coastline, the surrounding mountains do not have much of a presence in the city. I had forgotten about the great views of Baker, esp. from the Saanich Peninsula. The views of Baker are neat to see for their difference from the Vancouver angle. I might like the Victoria angle better.

I think its the first time I have seen that little range near Darrington with any clarity. After I posted, I realized it couldn't be the Olympics though. There is no view of them from Victoria that has those dramatic sharp rock peaks. Thanks, its nice to still have things to learn about the local/regional terrain.
