So what does that make the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque?

SignalHillHiker
Nov 25, 2013, 12:42 PM
Well, the Hagia Sofia would be a very old set of titties that might still look nice if you don't know any better but they're certainly nothing like they were in their glory days. They've had a lot of unfortunate work done... people just didn't know any better back then. It's like having had plastic surgery in the 1980s. You were practice. You probably look like shit.

And the Blue Mosque is obvious. Avatar titties.

I imagine that would be a common theme among students at any of the universities within an hour or two drive of the big city. Especially since many of them are from GTA to begin with.

Greetings, y'all.

My original username is Lenin, but due to some sort of insanely frustrating glitch I am unable to post photos or contribute to any threads under that name any more. I'm not banned or blocked, but haven't been able to post photos for a couple months now, and I have tried contacting the administration to no avail. Hence, I created a new account, and the following is a test run to see if I can actually contribute and be part of the team again.

The following shots were taken a couple months ago but I've been unable to post them until now. Without further ado, here's Winnipeg. 800,000 people, 3.6 km of rapid transit, and more brick than you can shake a stick at.

Hope this works. Word.

BlackBerry falters, but its backyard is thriving
Pool of technology talent and easier immigration laws are attracting firms
24 Dec 2013
International New York Times
BY IAN AUSTEN

... unlike some cities that suffered when a big local business faltered, as Rochester did with Kodak and Xerox, BlackBerry’s backyard of Waterloo still bubbles with economic energy.

Technology companies large and small are coming here, about 70 miles southwest of Toronto, to recruit BlackBerry’s talent — and several of the companies are also setting up shop in town.

Google, a local presence for nearly a decade, was recently joined by its Motorola Mobility hardware subsidiary. Square, the mobile credit-card-processing service started by Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s co-founder and chairman, opened an office. Cisco announced this month that it would create 1,700 research and development jobs within commuting distance.

And several start-ups that left Waterloo for the financing and talent of Silicon Valley, including Thalmic Labs, a gesture-control computing company, have come home.

... Even before the latest round of layoffs at BlackBerry was announced in September, several top technology companies, including Apple and Facebook, held recruiting nights in the area. Some companies that have swooped in for workers have tried to woo people to distant head offices.

But Mr. Power said Square decided that an office in the area would improve the company’s chances of hiring the best talent from the University of Waterloo, which has highly regarded computer science and engineering faculties and is a major part of the attraction for technology companies.

... The region has also tried to avoid a repeat of what happened in Ottawa, about 350 miles to the northeast, which experienced an exodus of skilled technology workers after the collapse of Nortel. A technology industry group in the area, Communitech, provides office space, mentoring and other services to startups and even large established firms.

... Although the jobs are staying in the region, they are concentrating in a different location. BlackBerry’s main office complex, just a couple of years old, sits on Waterloo’s most suburban fringe. Little but farms lies beyond it.

But many of the newer technology companies in the area, including Google, Square, MappedIn and Motorola, are in former industrial buildings in the heart of downtown Kitchener.

... For employers, he said, the competition to hire the best talent is less intense in Kitchener-Waterloo than in many other places, including California; employee turnover is much lower; and the community offers services like Communitech to help with recruiting. And because Canada’s immigration laws are more flexible than those of the United States, technology companies are also able to add talented foreign workers to the mix.

For employees, Mr. Phillips said, the area offers reasonable housing prices, good schools and other attractions. ‘‘I’ve been in Waterloo for almost 20 years now, and I really like the area,’’ he said.

Interesting quote. Here's an idea, come to Windsor and you show me where you can get a great shot of the city. There's basically 2 angles, looking at Detroit, or looking from Detroit, so don't go shooting us Windsor folks because our photos have Detroit in the background. It's just too damn flat here and we're next to an international river that most people taking pictures don't cross for the sake of looking back and taking pictures of Windsor. We don't have a lot of options for pictures.

Chadillaccc
Jan 2, 2014, 6:16 PM
I know man, I've been to Windsor several times (I'm from Woodstock), it was mostly just a joke with a hint of truth. I like that we have two border cities with cool skylines on both sides of their respective rivers.

I know man, I've been to Windsor several times (I'm from Woodstock), it was mostly just a joke with a hint of truth. I like that we have two border cities with cool skylines on both sides of their respective rivers.

Thanks for acknowledging that, some people don't realize.

Excellent photo!!! The pic quality is excellent - considering the circumstances. It is too bad that the SPC Building's observation deck is closed though.

(This is the very corner where Louis Riel was hanged.)

I did not know that! Interesting.

Yeah, I'd like to go out there on the 13th floor and get a good photo, but the glass is always so dirty up there.

CMA = 300,000 (mainly due to Warman/Martensville); Saskatoon itself is about 250,000. Good for Saskatoon though! Regina is making good strides as well.

Yep, I know. Most people refer to cities by their metro populations.

No one considers Victoria a city of 75 000 people, they consider it a city of 370 000 people. Same for Vancouver, no one considers it a city of 600 000, it's a city of 2.5 million.

If you happen to work in the SPC building, I'm sure that access can be granted to the rooftop gallery. I was up there a long time ago, and the pexiglass barriers had about a 10-12 cm spacing between them. There, at least, would be enough space for a camera lens.

I would try to do so during summer though. ;)

I believe I posted these shots of Lethbridge and the Oldman River a couple of years ago in another thread. My username was (is) Lenin, but I've had technical difficulties using that account and have received no assistance whatsoever, even though I have repeatedly tried to contact admins about the issue. Hint, hint. I would really appreciate it of somebody could throw me a bone and help me get my "Lenin" account useable again. It's silly that I had to create a second account. I digress. Enough bitching.

Here's Lethbridge, Alberta, a city of around 110,000 that kinda sucks, but would suck a lot more were it not for both a university and a college calling the area home. The Oldman River Valley, host to the High Level Bridge, separates West Lethbridge and the university from the residential / industrial North Lethbridge and South Lethbridge, which is where the college, hospital, and airport are located. The South Lethbridge area that borders both the North Side and the coulees facing the river valley is where the downtown core is located. Here's the Oldman River and downtown (which is neither decaying nor revitalizing itself, in frustratingly stagnant limbo). These were taken by my father from a helicopter in 2012:

Wow, great pictures, Empire. Halifax looks a lot more colourful and filled-in than I remember it. In my memories, the sky, buildings, and streets were all the same colour. Your Granville Mall shot is especially nice:

Love the bridge shot too.

Any plans to plant trees or so some garden landscaping on Citadel Hill?

Any plans to plant trees or so some garden landscaping on Citadel Hill?

Some modest landscaping would be nice, I agee; although, this landscaping would have to consist mostly of shrubs and bonsai trees. Tree height is still unwanted height. The City would likely want Victorian styled landscaping, just like what's in the Public Gardens, as well as what has been proposed for around Province House.

From what I've observed, the two largest oppositional opinions towards what you're proposing are: (1) that this military installation has never been a "garden", so repurposing the landscape would be totally out of context with the fort's history; and (2) this amount of green space (where the grass is usually maintained decently) is an extremely valuable 'open' space for students and downtown residents to have outdoor picnics and to sunbathe (the hill draws large crowds during the non-winter seasons just because of this).

The Citadel's green space will soon get used much more because of all the residential construction happening around it.

Oh, if people use it, leave it bare. Most of our parks downtown (Victoria, Bannerman, Bowring, etc.) have a small section of tended grass set out from any shade for sunbathing, games, etc. I don't think anyone here would want to lose those in favour of gardens.

Maybe spread a few cannons around the grounds or something? Just a little something to tie it all together.

Just decorate with some accessories? :haha:

Aesthetically, I like the cleancut green grass constrasted against the density of infrastructure (and trees) of the downtown. Aerial pics of Halifax's core are my favourite.

Anyone happens to have more pics of the area around that Morse's Teas buildings? If I recall correctly, it's one of the nicest parts of Old Halifax IMO. (Keep in mind I've never been there, going only from memory of the few pics I've seen on this forum.)

Keep the pics going and I might start to consider relocating there... :)

If I remember correctly, that building is more off to itself. I seem to recall a lot of park/parking lot around it? But I can't be sure.

Barrington is my favourite street in Halifax. And I love the pockets where the older buildings still dominate.

Check out this walking tour.

He starts over by the lower right side of the picture I posted, standing literally beside the Morse's Teas building, and walks around the areas heading (mostly) toward the left.

I like that view of Halifax you've posted. Within a few years, an updated photo will contain over a dozen new towers. Considering how small downtown Halifax is, relatively, that's a big deal for us!

And if the cityscape from Scotia (Square?) and the waterfront is your favourite spot: it'll be improved, hopefully within the next decade, as the highway interchange to the north (located to the right in your photo) will be torn down to allow for developments! The public consultations have begun and I'm incredibly excited!!

Personally, I'm hoping for towers akin to the "taller" towers already established in that area of the downtown. We might get something along the lines of 30-storey buildings, since this location is far enough away from the Citadel Hill, and it's not within any of the Citadel Hill's viewplanes.

Huzzah!! Fingers crossed, eh?
