Downtown Moncton as seen overlooking the settling ponds of the wastewater treatment plant on Outhouse Point in Riverview.

Yes, they built the sewage treatment plant in Moncton at Outhouse Point! :haha:

In this particular case however "Outhouse" was the surname of a farmer who originally lived in this location.

This is from 2013 sure, but it's probably even more pertinent like this.

The view from Mount Royal has always very, very much reminded me of the view from the mountain in Hamilton.

I've always felt the exact same way.

I've always liked Hamilton. It has a certain "umph" about it. It has always been a blue-collar town and that's OK and what I like is that the city has always embraced that reputation and culture instead of trying to white-wash over it.

All of Southern Ontario is on a complete tear skyline wise. The big 3 (London, Kitchener, Hamilton) all have huge numbers of large residential towers planned and even smaller centres are seeing new residential projects (Sarnia, Windsor, Guelph).

wow, what are the chances?

In a previous career, I once had an employee by the name of Ryan Outhouse. There was a problem with his paycheck, and I was on the phone with HR in Toronto trying to sort things out, with my employee sitting at the table across from me. "Outhouse. Yes, Outhouse...O-U-T-House..." (on the other end: "Oh my gawd, what a horrible last name, poor guy!!!"). Halifax

There has been some discussion of a tabletop effect forming. And it does look like that from some angles but from this angle you can see the viewplanes downtown that create gaps (meant to preserve certain views, not limit heights per se), and the taller buildings at higher elevation outside of downtown.

You can also see the cursed parking district on the left side. Not huge but there are 3-4 major sites that have all had delayed projects for one reason or another, as well as not so amazing 2000's development like that parking garage. That parking garage is under a viewplane so I could see it being difficult to justify redeveloping it.

What's that red building with no windows in the middle there?

That is The Dillon on the corner of Sackville and Market (by Maxwell's Plum). It is odd. It is a decent development with a facaded old brick and stone building and then some apartments above. It has 2 walls in the middle of the block that can't have windows for fire code reasons and they decided to put some bright red cladding on it.

The old bunker-like building to the south of it was recently torn down and so something of similar height will likely be built there and part of the red will be covered up.

It seems a bit unusual, I can't think of anything quite like it anywhere else with that level of visibility. I suppose they could paint some windows in, you know, with curtains, flowers, and happy faces and things, but perhaps a giant mural of some other nearby landmark would do just as well (although if it's temporary that might eliminate it from view eventually). The waterfront actually looks very pleasant from that angle. The tabletop phenomenon can be partially alleviated by encouraging rooftop features, like spires, lighting features, and odd shapes.

Recent drone photo of Moncton by Infinity Aerials

Within 5-6 years, there should be 4 new downtown towers in the 15-20 storey range, and several others in the 10-12 storey range. The changes in Moncton right now are incredible. 25,000 new people were added to the provincial population in the last year. 44% of this growth is in greater Moncton. In five years time, Moncton could be 50,000 people larger!

These are really great. Thanks for sharing!

St. John's harbour appears to be quite constricted. I always thought of it as being a larger basin, but this image (and a distance measurement on a map) now tell me otherwise. I can only imagine how congested it was during WWII! (ships my grandfather served on spent time in port there, re-supplying and getting ready for convoy duty; Halifax too)

^ I see so much potential along the river.

Right along the river is mostly marshland, and is protected. I have no problem with this. There is bordering parkland and an extensive trail system. It's actually quite pleasant, and watching the ever changing river with the impressive tidal range and the bore is fascinating.

The new development is concentrated on formerly industrial lands between Main Street and the river. This has become an ocean of parking, but, this is rapidly changing. Ashford Group owns extensive lands sound of Main Street and is working with the city on a major development, including a revised street grid, underground utilities and a cluster of new buildings ranging from 10-20 storeys in height. Lafford Realty meanwhile has a project called the Three Sisters which will include three 15 storey apartment buildings. The first of these has just been topped off. They are about to start work on the fifth floor of the second building. In addition, Lafford just purchased some adjacent land south of Assumption Blvd (on the actual riverfront) with plans for a fourth tower, purportedly 20 storeys. I know of two other buildings 10-12 storeys in height in pre-development in the central part of the city, with an additional nine storey building as part of the Junction Urban Village (another multi building development at Main/Vaughan Harvey). People in city planning (sworn to secrecy) have hinted at other major projects in the works.

I am not exaggerating when I say downtown Moncton will be unrecognizable in 10 years time.

What's interesting is the crane and steel framework you can see in the centre of the picture. That is the new Justice Building being constructed downtown, and as you can tell, it's going to have quite the impact on the downtown skyline.

That's great to hear as Moncton has always had a neat downtown vibe but has always felt a little incomplete. New Brunswick's three main Cities are all great communities taken for granted by the rest of Canada. Saint John has quietly become a very pleasant DT to visit.

A view of Fredericton from the river. The Beaverbrook hotel is to the left, along with the new Hilton hotel.

What's interesting is the crane and steel framework you can see in the centre of the picture. That is the new Justice Building being constructed downtown, and as you can tell, it's going to have quite the impact on the downtown skyline.

(Thanks OliverD for posting that pic in the Fredericton thread)

We don't see much Fredericton here. In fact that may be the first time I have!

Recent (a couple of weeks ago) drone shot showing construction progress on the Three Sisters development in downtown Moncton. The Second Sister is starting to become noticeable. Sister #3 will begin construction next year, and in 2025, a "fourth sister" on the other side of Assumption Blvd (purportedly 20 storeys) will begin construction.

Love Saint John - one of my favourite cities in Canada. NB has three excellent cities including Fredericton and Moncton and plenty of great towns as well.

Really like how the Three Sisters are coming along in Moncton - looks like a quality development. Bit confused by the ground floor (great to see no blank walls in the pic above) as it looks like ground level windows and no balconies? Maybe a townhouse style podium might have worked better here? Will know more when all is said and done including the landscaping.

The first level of the three storey podium will be commercial retail. The next two levels of the podium will be apartments, and do contain balconies.

Here's a photo from several months ago:

You can see they are trying to recreate a formal streetscape with the podium.

Here's an original rendering of the full project. The three storey podium will be common to all three towers.

It may not be to everyone's taste but Moncton does have its own unique vibe to it. And certainly the setting is quite unique as there aren't many cities on small tidal rivers with salt marshes.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53028339939_7226417bab_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2oMW6Z6)

This photo is taken from the riverfront trail in Riverview, with the Petitcodiac River and Riverfront Park in Moncton in the foreground.

In 5-6 years time, you can add in:

- the Third Sister (15 storeys)
- One Foundry (20+ storeys)
- Ashford/Downing tower (20+ storeys)
- St. Bernard Square (20+ storeys)

And this doesn't even include the soon to be constructed Infinity (30 storeys) which will be out of this field of view to the east.

The skyline of Moncton is about to become very different..............

London is already building higher - new tallest is u/c and 40 floors. Several other towers u/c and going before council is a 53 + 43 floor proposal at the forks of the thames and is 175 metres. That's pretty tall for a metro of about 500K.

That entire block is The Banks mixed-use development, with main floor commercial and residential condos on the upper floors. So far it's the only private sector development on the Riversdale side of the River Landing redevelopment scheme. You can spot the remaining parcels that are still to be offered up for development - hopefully soon.

Driving around downtown London the other day, I was struck by the "abandon all hope" atmosphere of the place. Meanwhile, over in Kitchener with its pokey downtown with none of London's advantages, the feeling is more "rough, but improving". Not sure why.

Please don't take this the wrong way ( although I guess it will come across as me being a dink ) ...
Ive seen many pics of Rimouski on here over the last 6 years and I'm still trying to understand why. NOTHING in Rimouski has changed in how long? Its the exact same basic image shown over and over again for some reason. If I didn't know it was posted by someone I would almost think its spam.
Maybe wait for something ... anything, to change before posting the same image again. Every city shown here has an advancing skyline and some sense of change thats all...

Tone hasn't posted any new pictures of Rimouski since May. I'm not sure why you're bringing this up now. It's not as if he's flooding the page with useless images.

Tone is just proud of his city (as most of us are). Many smaller cities have skylines that change at a glacial pace compared to Toronto or Vancouver. Cut him a break. :)

I agree, I haven't seen a Rimouski shot in a while. It would actually be nice to get one soon! ;)

Even if there aren't significant changes, I personally e joy seeing shots of different cities. Especially when it is smaller/less common cities, such as Rimouski. It's a nice break from the usual "Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal/Calgary/Edmonton/KW - repeat"

not a dink... i think people just get offended too easily.. heck, i've been guilty of that myself.
I often think the same thing with the Rimouski pics.. don't get me wrong.. it's nice to see pics of different cities.. but to your point.. they're almost always the same... I tend to agree with you.
I think the reason most of us log on is to see the "change" in cities.. without that factor I don't think most of us would bother with the site to be fair.

Find me a new different angle of a city that perhaps isn't going through change, and then by all means.

ps... if you're from Rimouski and seeing this.. I am by no means slagging your beautiful city.

I'm afraid to admit I drove PAST Rimouski about 20 years ago... we took the south shore route as far as Mont Joli on the way to New Brunswick (where we camped for a very windy night outside of Caraquet before driving down the coast to Shediac the next day, and then into PEI and Nova Scotia for a few days)

Next driving trip I make to Atlantic Canada will include more stops, as well as a tour around the Gaspésie! (I've seen so many great photos and a few driving videos of it all on this site)
