Hmmm, I wonder why we never see any skyline shot of Red Deer? It has an extremely nice skyline for its size. Even Lethbridge is pretty decent, more tall buildings than Red Deer, but much more dispersed.

I found this one of Red Deer, but it is like 5 years old, a new peak has since been added to the skyline in the form of the 50 meter Executive Place tower in 2010.

Much of Westmount Square is actually condos even though they look like offices. Also, Westmount is just the western end of the Montreal's downtown skyline... It's not even like it's a separate suburban skyline like Burnaby, Mississauga, or Longueuil etc.

I get your point, but Westmount is by no means 'just a suburb' in the same league as Burnaby or Missississassasage. Its quite more complicated than that.

um, how is it different? If anything it is just a continuation of downtown Montreal. It is akin to the Broadway skyline / district in Vancouver. So again, not eligible for this thread in the idea that it is only for skylines within metro-areas under 1 million.

SignalHillHiker
Oct 24, 2012, 10:41 PM
For what it's worth, I don't mind seeing districts/suburbs of less than one million from cities with metro populations exceeding that.

It makes it more manageable for me to relate... and I do like knowing/seeing. I'd never heard of Westmount, for example. Now I'll know next time I'm in MTL.

Would you guys share pictures so closely cropped to one small neighbourhood of your city on the big guys thread? If not, I definitely think they should be allowed here.

SignalHillHiker
Oct 24, 2012, 10:53 PM
Aww... well, I can't change the rules, obviously.

But I personally would love to see some of Vancouver's suburbs. If it's a historic/political entity separate from Vancouver, why not? Your pics from my "What do you suburbs look like?" thread were amazing.

SignalHillHiker
Oct 24, 2012, 10:55 PM
And, if they're separate municipalities, then I think definitely they should be allowed.

If the division was say, 100,000 then I would definitely post pictures of Mount Pearl in the "Under 100,000" thread, even though it's part of a 198,000 Metro.

The segregation ensures posts remain on the active page a little longer but, yes, it is pretty arbitrary. I'd like to see a one-picture-one-post-per-forumer-per-day-no-other-rules-skyline thread. :D

But I love having two skyline threads to follow right now as well.

giallo
Oct 25, 2012, 1:00 AM
My take on this is if the city is independent from the major city in the region ie. it has its own mayor, and therefore it's own elections, and is under 1,000,000 pop. then there shouldn't be any problem showing the skyline here. Photos of places like Laval, Burnaby and Mississuaga should be encouraged.

As for Westmount, well, it exists within Montreal, a city which isn't close to the 1,000,000 person number. The Great Canadian Skyline Thread is the place for that picture.

Rico Rommheim
Oct 25, 2012, 1:05 AM
My whole point with Westmount was that it is its own city, has its own elected mayor and IS NOT part of the city and has under 1,000 000 and yet its completely surrounded by Montreal. Its peculiar and an anomaly in Canada, its an enclave, you see.

giallo
Oct 25, 2012, 1:25 AM
Ah. I had no idea. Thanks.

Oct 25, 2012, 1:37 AM
The main reason this thread was created though is because cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto were drowning out the smaller cities. Westmount is politically independent from City of Montreal, but it is very much a part of the city of Montreal, so it shouldn't be included; neither should suburbs like Burnaby, Laval or Mississauga.

giallo
Oct 25, 2012, 3:16 AM
^Why? They are independent cities, and have as little exposure as, say, Regina does in the national skyline threads. A city skyline like Surrey's is seen far less than Winnipeg's on a national scale. They deserve to be shown here as well.

I'm kinda surprised people didn't know Westmount was just an extension of downtown... Would that have been the case 30 years ago I wonder?

Frankly, I don't care what the rules are for posting in this thread. I really like to see the distinct suburban skylines. My point was simply that Westmount's skyline is just the edge of Montreal's main downtown skyline. A decently wide shot of the western skyline will capture it and no one would notice that it's a separate municipality (I think the civic boundary literally goes through some buildings).

Yeah, except Regina isn't peeking around the corner when someone posts a photo of Calgary. Westmount is peeking around the corner when someone posts a photo of Montreal, it is just overshadowed.

Separate or not, it is part of the conurbation that is Montreal, and composes an integral part of what Montreal is as a metropolitan area.

giallo

I do agree that Westmount is a bit of a strange one, and probably shouldn't be shown here as it really is an extension of downtown Montreal's skyline.

I'm just advocating for more smaller cities within larger metros to have their skylines posted in this thread.

kool maudit
Oct 26, 2012, 12:30 PM
the last time westmount was really independent from downtown in a spatial sense was pre-drapeau, when "downtown" was functionally located in old montreal, and the current downtown was akin to boston's back bay.

MTLskyline
Oct 26, 2012, 11:30 PM
I think we should draw a distinction between the two parts of Westmount.

Lower Westmount (Sherbrooke St. and below) is effectively the westernmost part of downtown Montreal, whereas Upper Westmount (above Sherbrooke) feels completely distinct. Lower Westmount has few detached single family homes, whereas Upper Westmount is almost entirely detached housing.

GlassCity
Oct 27, 2012, 4:27 AM
The way I see it, is when people put up pictures of Vancouver or Toronto, I see downtown Vancouver or Toronto. It wouldn't be easy to post an Oshawa skyline picture in the main skyline thread, and that's what this is for. This thread was made to see skylines other than Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Toronto. Burnaby and Missisauga certainly fall under that.

The neighbourhood is pretty nice at street level. It has a diverse mix of housing from around 1800 to the mid-Victorian period:

Cool Halifax pictures. I especially like the second, less-zoomed photo that shows the nieghbourhood slowly building up towards the core.

Back in August I posted a set of pictures from the roof of City Hall. Obviously I won't quote all the photos since the post wasn't that long ago, but maybe I'll try to get up there at dusk to get a different view.

Here's the panorama, though:

That picture is actually facing away from the core; most of what you see there would be considered the South End.

London looks a lot less dreary than the average midsized city in Ontario!

I haven't set foot in Quebec City for years, but that shot brings back memories -- my gf used to live right next to the foot of that Banque Nationale building visible on the left of the picture (on Lockwell right off Turnbull). When on foot, I'd use it for orientation... Thanks for the pics david!

Also, I happen to like the Complexe G and think it's a nice feature of QC's skyling -- but I hate the Delta (like Franks). Bland in an ugly way.

Also... it's the far Western portion of the skyline :)

It's really too bad that Regina wasn't built closer to the Qu'Appelle valley. Would have definitely made the surrounding area/city plan a little more interesting. Oh well.

Aside that, the Swedish food was VERY good, and tasteful :)

There are constant rumours about IKEA in Halifax, so I don't think hearing about them means anything either way. I do think however that the new store in Winnipeg indicates that a Halifax store isn't far-fetched; they're probably in the same ballpark as retail markets when it comes to "regional" stores that wouldn't open up elsewhere in the Maritimes.

Here's a skyline picture from the North Common in Halifax:

We may have had NA's first Ikea, but I'd still be absolutely shocked if we got a contemporary version before our metro area reaches 3/4 of a million. But hey, until then we can enjoy http://www.myboxbuyer.com/our-services which I've taken full advantage of.

Man you guys with the scenery and hills...looks amazing at night.

All I can think of that Winnipeg can really show for this thread are the Esplanade Riel backdrop pics, which connects Winnipeg to Saint-Boniface, and that it has the tallest buildings in a metro under 1MM. Otherwise - aucun.

But nothing comes close scenerywise there to these amazing costal cities, scenery et al, and of course the ultimate beauty that is Quebec City. It amazes how beautiful at night these cities are.
