St. John's and Regina both benefit from being provincial capitals. They also don't have provincial counterparts that dwarf them (à la Montreal in Sherbrooke's case).

And St. John's also benefits from history and isolation. The nearest city our size or larger, Halifax, is a 1,500 km drive away. It's no harder to get to anywhere else in the world than to our nearest neighbour. Everything we need to supply at least 350,000 of Newfoundland's people has to be in our region.

I was actually also going to mention isolation for both places too as compared to Eastern Canadian cities, Western Canadian centres are also very isolated, though not to the extent St. John's is.

The skylines of Fort Mac and Red Deer have both benfited from the boom, but no noticeably tall buildings have been built in Lethbridge or Medicine Hat in like 30 years unfortunately.

Maybe in a couple years... The tallest current proposals are for a 90 and 73. Would be nice to have a new peak above the plateau that is sort of developing.

Here's hoping! I also hope more mid-rise residential gets built in the Regina core too. The two going up right now are quite nice... and a definite sign that Regina is headed in the right direction. If Capital Pointe gets built, that will be really great. There are cities of 500 000 - 750 000 in Canada and cities of 1 million + in the states that don't have mixed-use developments that nice.

Kind of sad that Moose Jaw and Brandon both have downtowns and skylines twice the size of either of Thunder Bay's downtowns, and we have 4 times as many people as either one. Port Arthur has over 50,000 people and looks like a city of half the size. :(

Unusual view of Halifax's North End. It's a very mixed neighbourhood -- there are some great old buildings but there are also a lot of ugly, ill-conceived housing projects. The little red apartment building in the lower right is the corner of North and Gottingen.

We'll start with a couple of pictures of the downtown skyline highlighting the massive hotels overlooking the falls.

Fredericton is absolutely gorgeous!!!

I agree that Fredericton is quite charming. It's both bucolic and quite well endowed for a city it's size simultaneously. An interesting "down home" mix.

The sad thing about Freddy is that it is stuck in the middle of nowhere. From Woodstock to Fredericton is a one hour drive on the TCH through densely forested land. After Freddy, it's another 90 minute drive through NB's nether regions to Moncton. There are only two exits to Fredericton from the TCH, and you can't see the city from either exit. If you aren't paying attention, you could bypass the city without even knowing that it was there.... :(

The new four lane TCH from Moncton to Woodstock is a great road, but the designers placed the right of way through the wilderness. It would have been better if the highway were closer to the Saint John River west of Freddy and if it had followed a more southerly alignment towards Sussex east of the capital. At least that way you might form the impression that there are actual living human beings resident in the province (in addition to the moose).

NB was a "drive through" province before. It's even worse now!!! You can cross the province on the highway and think no one actually lives here. This is the worst impression you could possibly give a tourist....... :hell:

So true. I have driven on this highway countless times (Moncton to Quebec/SJ to Quebec) and yes, the new highway is atrociously boring and does not offer a fair impression of this part of the province. Altough the last time I drove on it, I had more time on my hands and decided to use the old highway from Fredericton to Perth Andover which was nice and I have to admit, quite scenic.

Hay River is the perfect example of Canadian city design. 3 700 people and a highrise apartment building. :D

Is it just me, or does Prince Rupert look like a Soviet industrial town in that picture?

Living there FEELS like living in Soviet Russia...

Also, the yellow high rise in the back is Digby Towers, and the last I heard it was abandoned. I'm not sure about the situation now.

Thanks Dylan. I would do Eastern Canada... but there are sooo many small city-skylines out there, and I already did a post of mostly Eastern Canada and BC back in 2011. Plus, most posters on here are from the east and don't know anything about the west, other than misinformed assertions usually. So it's nice for people to see.

Quebec remains the most mysterious for all anglophones though I think.

On another note, I do sometimes wish Canada had more cities in the 50-150k range. Though I also wish we had more cities in pretty well every range.:P

Chances are if anything happens that is newsworthy enough for Hay River to get some news time in Edmonton, It happened in that building. It is not a good place.

Quebec is pretty well represented here though. We see photos of Montreal, Quebec City, Gatineau, Sherbrooke, and Rimouski often... and pictures of Saguenay and Trois Rivieres every now and then. I don't think any other cities (metro areas and census agglomerations) have skylines in Quebec.

In my opinion, the biggest enigma's in Canada are Atlantic cities... most of which are severely under-represented, save for Halifax and St. John's, which are somewhat over-represened even :P but I'm not complaining!

I do share your opinion that Canada could use somemore larger CA's and smaller CMA's though. I like to see population distribution, not concentration. That is why I'm so glad to see Saskatchewan and Manitoba back on the rise, especially with their 2nd tier cities growing quite quick now (except for Prince Albert).

There's a good number of us from the smaller centers in the Maritimes on here, I think only a few read or post in the Canada forum though.

I moved to Edmonton to make thousands of dollars a week (god bless Alberta eh? :D ) so if I go back for Christmas or whatever I'll take some photos of Nova Scotian Towns and Cities

Moncton and Saint John are the only other two Maritime cities that really have "skylines" in the traditional sense, and Moncton's is (just my honest opinion) not very visually interesting. Sydney sort of has one. The rest of the region has very little in terms of conspicuous modern architecture (you might get some "skylines" made up of church steeples and town hall type buildings but that's about it). It's kind of the same reason cities like Cambridge and Guelph are underrepresented here.

I'm more surprised at how under-represented Victoria, Mississauga, and Niagara Falls are. (Edit: I forgot about the controversy surrounding Mississauga in regards to the CMAs of 1 million or under thing. I guess that explains why we never see it here)

Both Fredericton and Charlottetown have modest skylines too, and it could be argued that even Bathurst has a bit of a skyline......

Braymondg recently posted this picture of the new convention centre in downtown Charlottetown in the PEI thread.

I would argue that Fredericton does not really have a skyline. Very, very few buildings break through the tree canopy, and the ones that do, just barely do.

I guess Charlottetown's skyline is slightly more conspicuous than Sydney's. To me, though, a skyline is more than just one or two or three buildings that happen to be >5 storeys. It's a significant, distinctive variation in building height that looks dramatic from a distance. Neither Charlottetown, nor Fredericton, nor Sydney nor Bathurst really have that, IMO. Each of them has a couple "sort of tallish buildings". This doesn't mean that they're not great cities (I've had nothing but great times in Fredericton), it just means that they don't really have what most people would consider skylines.

If they're going to build just 1 big building in a tiny town like that, they could have put more effort into making it special.

I doubt that. Anglophones in Ontario and the Maritimes travel to Quebec often; lots actually move there for a few years for school or right after. It feels familiar/like home for lots of anglophones. Quebec is largely a mystery to Westerners.

Not to mention Anglophones from Quebec, a population roughly analogous to that of New Brunswick.

I think this is the best shot of St. John's skyline I've ever seen. This angle really makes it look denser and not so spread out and linear. When they finally finish the Henry Bell buildings it will really add to this shot as well.

Also, great job to those who posted the skylines of the smaller cities across Western and Atlantic Canada - really interesting.

Here's Calgary's tiny Westbrook Skyline. One of the buildings is over 80 meters, I believe. Possibly higher.

Yeah, but it is a small skyline. Didn't think it belonged in the regular skyline thread, hence why I didn't double post it in both. However, if it's actually something people are gonna complain about, I'd be glad to move it.

Thanks so much for posting pics of some of those small cities! I hear their names but have NEVER seen pics of them. Always was curious to see what Lethbridge or Moose Jaw looked like.

Also that is the best St Johns pic Ive seen. It looks like a major city. Very Halifax-ish.

The skyline isn't really very waterfront. I think it's a bit further from the bay than Montreal's is from the water.
