anyone know where in north van this was taken ? I see stairs in the bottom right?

^They look a bit like power lines to me, but maybe they're stairs.

Thanks for the tip Yume-sama. Unfortunately I don't have Photoshop. I wish I did, but it's a bit pricey isn't it? One day...

I don't know the exact location but it's definitely east of the grain elevators. Over by the cemetery or cap college. Maybe just above park and tilford, depending on the zoom

no your right. i don't believe i've ever claimed them to be my own though.
i try and credit as much as possible but often it's hard to credit each and every photographer out there simply because i save them on my desktop and host the pictures myself later.

not sure the way around that. i like sharing pics but damn, i do have a life.

Ahhhh.... the palm trees, the water, the beaches and the sunny day remind me so much of Hawaii. If there is less rainfall and more sunshine in Vancouver, this place would be paradise! :cool:

i know this is the most common photo of vancouver in existence, but still, seeing it reminds me viscerally of these melancholy early january mornings taking the seabus to the vancouver side during the month i stayed in north vancouver a few years ago. thanks dude for the reminiscence.

Found a pretty interesting view of Vancouver False Creek taken on the Cambie Bridge (http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=e7fa3823-4018-4eec-8733-83d6a4080d26&i=0:0:2&z=518.5901600000001&g=0&p=0:0&m=false&c=2.35068:-1.23401:0.33642&d=-1.4025:-0.70723:-0.741261)

You will need to install a plugin to view but it's well worth it.

There's a guy working on the barge parked on the south shore. If you zoom in you can make out the name of the company he works for... pretty cool.
This guy obviously took some high def pictures with a powerful zoom. Try zooming in on ScienceWorld, or Maynards building.

Photosynth is a software that automatically stitches your photos together. If you take alot of overlapping photos of a particular scene it will create a virtual 3D representation of it capable for panning, zooming and tilting views.

I can see alot of potential for Photosynth in the RE industry.

Yes it has a panorama mode, but I usually just stitch it together in photoshop. It's a old phone from ~3 years ago, Sony Ericsson K750i, so the camera is pretty bad (2MP-really grainy).
If you think that's good, buy a Nokia N95 or SE K850 and you can can get a decent resolution without grain :P

Thanks, but that's because I scaled it way down in order not to see the grain. Btw, there is a really nice (private property?) park there with a fountain...too bad I didn't bring my real camera to take the pano.

No, try the other direction. That's the Indian Arm in the foreground. You're looking south west. It is downtown in the distance, so you are correct on that point. :)

I saw the movie "Changeling" this past weekend and was really surprised that it included a Vancouver scene - circa 1930. I was pretty impressed.

I was quite impressed with the CGI work, mostly in LA where the bulk of the story and scenes take place. But the Vancouver shot was really unexpected and cool. I recognized the mountains immediately.

Restored heritage structure Abbott House, 720 Jervis, originally built in 1899
Part of the Residences on Georgia development

One of the few West End mansions remaining from the pre-World War 1 era when the area was known as 'Blueblood Alley'.

Built by Henry Braithwaite Abbott CPR executive b. June 14, 1829, Abbotsford, Que.; d. Sept. 13, 1915, Vancouver. Studied civil engineering at McGill. Throughout his career, he held important positions in eastern Canadian railway systems, before appointment as CPR superintendent. Present at laying of the last spike Nov. 8, 1885 at Craigellachie; rode the first train from Montreal to Port Moody with Lord Strathcona and CPR president Sir William Van Horne. In March 1886, let the contract for the clearing of the townsite of Vancouver (pop. 500). A mountain in the Selkirks and Vancouver's Abbott St. are named for him.

That looks like HDR (high dynamic range) which is usually made from a number of different exposures which are combined into one. It often gives an unrealistic or surrealistic appearance by revealing detail in areas which would normally be overexposed and underexposed. The downside is sometimes a blurry appearance and unrealistic photos. For sky detail, polarizing filters on a camera lens can bring out more contrast and deeper colour.

There are also ways of simulating this effect with post processing in photoshop etc.

Here is a photo I took in which I partially simulated the effect somewhat without using HDR, but the appearence has some different qualities:

The view of Vancouver's skyline from the Second Narrows bridge is by far the most underrated and least photographed. I've always liked this vantage point.

Thanks. I wish that bridge had wider sidewalks tho. Barely enough room for a cyclist to squeeze by. And whenever a big truck went by (which was often) the whole bridge shakes. A little harrowing especially on such a cold day but worth it!

And here's on from North Vancouver. This was right after I got back into my car after locking my keys inside. It sure cut the daylight picture taking short so I decided to try and salvage the day at least :rolleyes:
