There are a few 30 storey or so towers planned/proposed for the DTES but nothing substantial, it will remain a primarily 5-6 storey street wall neighbourhood... which would be a refreshing change if you ask me.

Wouldn't that be more like crazy photoshop than crazy zoom. Don't think you could bring Baker in so close without bringing the city in so close that you only had one small sliver of the Wall Centre or something left in the pic.

If the photographer were far enough from the city that type of photo is entirely possible. Perhaps the photographer was on a ferry over to Nanaimo and used a telephoto lense.

I don't think the people are trying to avoid Chinatown, its because with Chinese shopping malls are everywhere now its no need to go to Chinatown anymore. I do most of my Chinese shopping in Surrey or metrotown. I haven't gone to Chinatown or even Richmond for a long long time.

Yeah, that photo is definitely not photoshopped, cropped maybe. My guess is that it's taken on the ferry from Naniamo to Vancouver. The photographer was probably using a 300mm-400mm lens.

Hey Crazy, what exactly is your beef with Seattle. You always have to comment on how you don't think Seattle is anything compared to Vancouver. Vancouver is a very physically attractive city but I guaratee you there is a million more cultural opportunities in Seattle. Just the Space Needle huh.. what about the Pike Place Market, you know the one that Granville market is modeled after. Oh yeah and the EMP, the Seattle Art Museum, the shopping that so many Vancoverites seem to enjoy every weekend. Please and don't even get me started on the music scene comparisons, P.S.-some real nice photos here.

I don't mean to offend anyone when I call Seattle dull. I have no "beef" with Seattle. I have been to Seattle many times and I just find it to be dull and not just in comparison to Vancouver. Seattle has some nice attractions outside of downtown, such as the Zoo and museum of flight, but for the most part it seems to be lifeless street after lifeless street. The EMP is hugely overrated, Pike Market makes me claustrophobic and Vancoverites go shopping in Seattle because its cheaper. There are a lot of cultural events in Vancouver; it could be better but I don't think Vancouver much behind Seattle in that regard.

I have traveled a fair amount and there are plenty of cities that I love, but I just don't feel that way about Seattle. So what ever.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but us Vancouver mods are going to be cracking down on improperly sourced photos in an attempt to step our game up a notch.

Here is the official policy on posting photos:

Proper crediting format for each found photograph: directly above or below the photo, list the photographer's name, the name of the source, and give a link to the page upon which the photo is found.

If the photographer's name is not available, name the website where the photo was found and link to the page of the site where the photograph is found.

Merely citing Google, Flickr, Wikipedia or some other host or search engine is *not* sufficient for your photo post to qualify. If you don't have the required information about a photograph, then don't post it.

All posts that do not adhere to these rules will be deleted on sight.

Now lets keep these purdy photos coming. :D

Had an even nicer one with a helicopter doing a loop above City Hall during a 30 sec exposure...sort of like a halo, but it turned out too dark. I put it up here on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/24606189@N03/3315138755/) (click "all sizes").

Btw, someone should create a photo request thread so that people can request what they want to see pictures of (i.e buildings under constructions, areas of the city, etc).
I'm running out of ideas :P

Thanks! I was reading the Courier yesterday after I posted the pics and found the article on what was going on:

Aboriginal smudge ceremony aims to end discrimination
Local event marks 'International Day' of equality, understanding
Janaya Fuller-Evans, Special to Vancouver Courier
Published: Friday, March 20, 2009

Stopping racist attitudes and discrimination takes personal involvement, according to a Simon Fraser University professor who studies inequality.

Michael Schmitt, an assistant psychology professor at SFU, said events such as those marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination this weekend, can change perceptions for those who actively participate.

The UN General Assembly declared the day in 1966, to commemorate people killed at a peaceful anti-apartheid demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa on March 21, 1960. "These are positive things and yes, they do make a difference," Schmitt said. "The ones that have the greatest effect involve people in some way."

A smudge ceremony for the Downtown Eastside, planned by Darla Laughlin with Women Against Violence Against Women, takes place on Saturday near Hastings and Main streets. The ceremony involves burning cedar and prayer as a form of spiritual cleansing.

According to organizers, members of different races--organized into black, red and yellow according to the colours on the aboriginal medicine wheel--will gather at four nearby intersections before coming together to mix at the ceremony site. "I think it's a great example," Schmitt said.

Laughlin, who is the aboriginal outreach coordinator and youth counsellor for WAVAW, said she wanted to honour the day because she believes women in the Downtown Eastside are targets for violence because of their race.

"What I hear is people are still being discriminated against," Laughlin said. "And aboriginal women are definitely being targeted by [violent] perpetrators."

The smudge ceremony, based on the First Nations medicine wheel, combines the four races of the world coming from the four directions of the earth, according to Laughlin. "The idea of the ceremony is to pray for all people," Laughlin said.

Racial discrimination remains a concern in Canada, according to a June 2008 Statistics Canada report. In 2006, police services covering 87 per cent of Canada's population reported 892 hate crimes, of which six out of 10 were motivated by race or ethnicity. However; hate crimes were just one per cent of reported crimes for that time period.

Combining groups of people, as the smudge ceremony plans to do, allows them to find a commonality, according to Schmitt, who said such actions eliminate stereotyping and prejudice.

When people cross racial group lines to work together, whether for an event or a cause, "there's a potential point of collaboration," Schmitt said.

The smudge ceremony is planned for 10:30 a.m. near Hastings and Main streets. Forty ceremonial elders and advisers have been ceremonially prepared for the smudging and prayer.
