Thanks! I love how the mountains look this time of year all covered in snow with the ski runs lit up. It's a rare occurrence to even see the mountains in the winter but when they are exposed it's downright beautiful.

Thanks for the mountain shots Zivan56! Nice perspective with city hall in the foreground. I just can't stop looking at the snow covered mountains out of my window.....just breathtaking this time of year.

bleh, I'm not a fan of all those low-mid rises. tear down the townhouses, and put point towers in their place. More density the better, I already know that the west end is the densest in the city.

vanman
Jan 4, 2008, 6:22 PM
Triangle west has to be the densest part of the city by now. Much taller buildings closer together with street level townhouses. Even if 20% of the units are unoccupied at any given time I still think the density per sq/km in comparison to the west end must be higher.

West Broadway and Main Street, looking North.
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/3271/p1040808dj3.jpg

West Broadway at Quebec street, looking west. The SkyTrain Millennium Line will be extended in phases under Broadway to the University of British Columbia (UBC) over the next 12 years. Central Braodway is ahead and it is the second densest concentration of jobs in British Columbia after the downtown core.
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/8381/p1040811jd1.jpg

Looking south up Quebec street. The articulated diesel bus is part of the #99 B-Line bus rapid transit line that runs along Broadway out to UBC from the major transit hub at Commercial Drive and East Broadway. The #99 B-Line exclusively uses 120-passenger articulated diesel buses with as little as two or three minutes of headway. It currently carries in excess of 70,000 passengers per day and it will be replaced in phases by construction of the above-mentioned extension of the SkyTrain Millennium Line next decade.
http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/2392/p1040814wh5.jpg

Looking north down Quebec street for a glimpse of part of the downtown core.
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/4604/p1040812no6.jpg

West Broadway and Cambie Street looking south, just north of City Hall. The enormous construction project is part of the new SkyTrain Canada Line that will connect the city of Vancouver to its southern neighbour Richmond and to the Vancouver International Airport.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/5236/p1040824ef4.jpg

Looking north along Cambie Street towards downtown Vancouver. The pit in front is part of the abovementioned SkyTrain Canada Line.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/153/p1040815ng9.jpg

West Broadway experiences a major bottleneck at Cambie street due to the SkyTrain Canada Line construction. It goes from a total of six lanes down to two. The bus-only lanes are forefitted in the intersection and the buses must merge with regular traffic. The bus to the left is one of our new 77-passenger electric trolley buses.
[picture link broken, sorry]

Because of the construction on Cambie it is easier to walk a block east or west of the street when heading north towards the Cambie Street Bridge and downtown. This is at Yukon and 7th. The second building to the left is called The Rise and it is a mixed-use building housing three large format retailers (Home Depot, Winners clothing, and Save on Foods), and a number of rental condos on the upper floors. The building further ahead on the left is also a new building. It houses two large format retailers, Canadian Tire and Best Buy.
[picture link broken, sorry]

Another shot of The Rise.
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/4214/p1040828ix9.jpg

Ivy is being encouraged to grow up a blank cement wall of the Canadian Tire building. Every new building is expected to have a landscaping plan and the developer pays for the public realm improvements associated with construction of a new building. Some of these improvements include new wider sidewalks, new street trees, etc.
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/3071/p1040831ww8.jpg

Looking south along Cambie Street. The Rise is on the left and the new public realm it is supplying is taking shape. In the centre up the street is the Canada Line construction. The building on the right is called Crossroads and it is a mixed-use building incorporating a medium-sized office building that will be the corporate headquarters for Yoga wear maker Lululemon, 88 condos, a Whole Foods grocery store, a Royal Bank, and a number of restaurants.
http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/4372/p1040834za6.jpg

The Cambie Street Bridge is down to two lanes from its previous six in order to make room for the construction of the Canada Line. Pedestrian and cycling access is unaffected.
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/3084/p1040833rb0.jpg

Looking east at Second Avenue and Cambie towards the Olympic Village construction precinct in Southeast False Creek (SEFC). Most of the Olympic Village surrounding SEFC neighbourhood will be built to about the same approximate height as the building on the right in this photo, which is about 90 feet in height. There will be a number of buildings that reach slightly taller and others, obviously, will be shorter.
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/7075/p1040840do4.jpg

Another shot of the Southeast False Creek neighourbood, this time looking east from the Cambie Street Bridge deck. The brick building on the right is being restored and converted to lofts. A streetcar line, Vancouver's first in more than 50 years, will run down First, below, and connect to SkyTrain to the east and Granville Island to the west. Additional phases are planned.
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/8452/p1040841oy0.jpg

One of the mass of cranes building the Olympic Village.
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/8947/p1040845vu4.jpg

New towers by Concord Pacific in the Cooper’s Quay precinct. Behind them is BC Place, home of the BC Lions football franchise and the site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/2973/p1040850ot3.jpg
Part of the Yaletown waterfront. The Yaletown station of the Canada Line is being built behind these towers on Pacific Blvd. You can just barely make out its mobile crane. The public recreational Seawall meets the water in front of the towers.
http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/9831/p1040853lh5.jpg

Things are moving along for the Olympic Village. Construction continued through the worst of winter without disruption. The weather is fine again, the snow has melted, and the first flowers are starting to bud.

It has become a pretty busy place. 12 tower construction cranes are building the 16 buildings, the first of which is about three storeys above ground. The remainder is all below- or at- grade.

The big news is that the new pedestrian and bicycle Seawall is open through the Olympic Village site and one can now get up close and personal with the project.

The overall state of the site:
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/4994/p1040849hg9.jpg

The following several shots of the new man-made marine habitat island. The very small bay to the left is where the daylighted stream will empty into False Creek. There are dozens of streams running under Vancouver, all of which were filled in or buried in sewers more than a hundred years ago. One is being daylighted and deeply integrated into the landscaping of the Olympic Village. The elementary school will be right beside it and children can be expected to play on its banks and run across its pedestrian bridges.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/6084/p1040858mx2.jpg

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/6166/p1040865ji4.jpg

The new Seawall features separated pedestrian and bicycle/wheeled vehicle paths, a number of boardwalks that feature recovered wood from the old industrial piers on the site, and an inlet with pedestrian bridge adjacent a piazza and the community centre. A marina for non-motorized boats (Dragon Boat war canoes, kayaks, etc.) will be adjacent.

wow amazing... thanks for sharing.

Yeah someone will sleep on those benches. They need to be separated in the middle... but then that ruins the design and "flo" of the bench =(

No one should be sleeping on those benches during the olympics at least... high security?

I took to heart a recent comment I recieved expressing appreciating about seeing a different side of Vancouver in some of my photos other than the one usually shown in typical Vancouver skyline shots. So I took this mini photo tour on a cloudy, cold, and all together more representative Vancouver winter day when I had a free hour and was downtown after a meeting. They are mainly of the “Crosstown” neighbourhood where Downtown meets Chinatown.

A random downtown alley (Between Cordova and West Hastings off of Richards)

“2 Jays” Building (West Pender and Abbot. The namesake 2 Jays Café is long gone, shut down for one too many health code violations.)
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/8648/p1050150jn3.jpg

33 Pender (high-end Lofts) (Mid-block, West Pender and Abbot. It has come to my attention that this is actually a market condo project, as opposed to social housing. The high ceilings should have been a give-away. Thanks jlousa)

Chinatown Gates (West Pender and Carrall. Looking back along West Pender towards downtown.)

Wing Sang Heritage Restoration and EAST (East Pender and Columbia. The Wing Sang building dates back to 1889 and is being restored and converted to 22 high-end condos, while EAST is a new infill low-rise condo block, also high-end.)

Less than a block away the police stop a couple of junkies from openly smoking crack in an alley.

The first section of the Carrall Street Greenway is complete. http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/2894/p1050136wx1.jpg

It is now being extended south to the Seawall at False Creek and in time it will be extended north to Gastown and eventually the as-yet-unbuilt Seawall to the north in the Port lands.

Love you pics SFUVancouver, and I also respect your commentary and ideas even if we don't always agree. Always just wanted to clarify that 33 Pender isn't Social housing, it's actually high-end loft. Take a look at

http://www.33living.ca/

for details, this isn't advertising as I'm not associated with that project in anyway.

I would love to see a walking picture tour of Collingwood/Joyce and Kerrisdale as they don't seem to have much airtime here but have some nice buildings.

^ Thanks for the correction. To be honest that makes more sense. I didn't recall reading about a West Pender location for social housing on the recently posted list of social housing units under construction. The high ceilings and respectable architecture should have been clues.

I appreciate your feedback too.

Yeah, great pics. I think the potential revitalization of Chinatown -- between new residential developments, some new retail activity, plus the Greenway -- is one of the underrated stories on this forum and in Vancouver generally.

I haven't a clue what sort of camera was used for that excellent dusk panorama but I can tell you what I have and my experience with it.

I have a Panasonic Lumix TZ2. 10x optical zoom, optical image stabilization, 28mm wide angle Leica lens, 7 megapixels. About $450 for the TZ3 model (same camera, slightly bigger lcd screen)

I am still learning how to get the most out of it but I find I am hard pressed to take poor photos. It does not have quite as much colour depth as I would like on overcast or dreary days but that may be a setting I need to play around with.

photographers will often say that it's not the camera that produces a nice photo, but rather it's the photographer. although i could not tell you what type of camera the photographer used for the pano posted above, i could tell you that the quality of the photo was acheived by a combination of the photographer's expertise (i.e., choosing proper aperture, exposure time), vantage point, time of day selection, the use of a tripod, and editing on a program such as Photoshop. it would be definitely possible to acheive a photo such as that one even without the use of a fancy professional camera. on the flip side, improper use of a fancy camera would not produce the level of photography you desire.

SFUVancouver - as for getting colour depth on a dreary overcast day, may I suggest the following. Take a photo in its normal mode (i.e., P mode or 'auto' mode). Then take a look at the settings with which the photo was taken (i.e., 1/200 f8.0). In order to get better colours, re-take the photo in 'manual' mode at a higher f-stop value, which in this case would be 1/200 f9.0. This will make the image appear darker, since a higher f-stop value will close the 'eye' of the camera just slightly. After uploading the photo onto your computer, use a program such as Photoshop to manually 'saturate' and 'brighten' the photo. You will then find your photo to be very lively in colour. If you have a nice photo you want me to play around with, just post it on here and I'll do a little demo for ya. I think I played around with one of your Shangri-la images once that you took on Georgia (I turned it into a future render).

During boxing week, you could have had a Canon Digital Rebel XT w/2 lenses for around $500. I bought my Fuji S6000fd from Dell for $399 last year and it's pretty good. However, I wouldn't recommend even a bridge camera if you are willing to spend more than $500. Go for the Canon Rebel if you can spend around $700 w/taxes.

Keep in mind no matter which camera you buy, it's up to you how much time you want to spend taking the picture and learning how to use the camera. I wouldn't buy anything not listed here:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html
If you want something below 400, I would get the Canon S5 IS. However, I would rather keep mine due to better lens, manual zoom, longer exposure time, RAW support, and a number of other things.

For night shots, lens and sensor size are crucial; along with exposure time. There is also the issue of F/Stop as mentioned above. Some night pics I posted a couple of pages back had 15 seconds exposure. You will need to invest in a tripod as well, which can be bought for $15 at XSCargo.

zivan, for night shots - how do you determine how long to expose for? i know a 15s exposure will give you a 'dreamy' looking photo, but other than that what are the advantages?

zivan56
Feb 5, 2008, 5:37 AM
Trial and error basically. You won't need that long if you have a good camera. However, I get lots of grain when I up the ISO on mine...and too much light entering creates too much of star effect.
The above pano was at least 5-10 seconds, as you can see by the smoke trails from the buildings, that's what I was referring to.
For example:

Good night shots can be a challenge. The biggest factor, for me anyway, is to take the picture at dusk. This allows you to get good lighting and detail without the artificial lights washing out.

Here are some examples:

This one was a six second exposure. There was enough light to do a one second exposure, but I had upped to F-stop (f8) so I could bring out more detail in the smaller objects.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/194/497732399_9c70b8e1b2.jpg?v=0

I almost ran out of light with this shot. Again, my shutter speed was 8 seconds and my F-stop was set to f6.3.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/230/497711149_d8cae8811f.jpg?v=0

Here is a good example of a dusk shot. A very clear night and a lot of internal light can help. The exposure here was 2.5 seconds, and the F-stop was set to f7.1

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2232/2055660699_2ed92301a7.jpg?v=0

Vancouver has a lot of cloud cover which can work for you rather than against. The city lights bounce of the clouds giving off artificial light in to the sky. It will also give you a great cloud movement effect against the stationary buildings. The trick is to get the shot at dusk. Here is an example of the shot after dusk. As you can see the lights are washed out. It would have been a great shot had I managed to take it earlier.

30 second exposure. F-stop was at f10

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1316/1271060239_34acaab849.jpg?v=0
