I used to work for a security company in downtown Vancouver. One of the perks of the job was having access to the top of many downtown skyscrapers - areas that only security personnel and engineers could go. So a few weeks ago, after I decided I was quitting, I thought I'd take my camera up to the top of a 30 storey building right in the middle of downtown and take as many shots as possible, because a view like this is too nice to waste on just me:

1. Looking north across Burrard Inlet (Pacific Ocean) to North Vancouver. I live in North Van in that cluster of apartments in the distance. Coast mountain range behind that.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/4.JPG

2. Looking north-west.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/5.JPG

3. Looking west down Georgia street, one of the main roads through the city. Stanley Park in the distance. Hotel Vancouver in the front left.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/1.JPG

4. Looking west out to the Pacific Ocean.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/9.JPG

5. Looking down at the main shopping/party street in Vancouver: Robson street (quiet east end of it).

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/11.JPG

6. Looking south across the Granville street bridge.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/13.JPG

7. Vancouver's tallest building for a few more months - the Wall Centre.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/15.JPG

8. The court building.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/18.JPG

9. South-east condo-land.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/20.JPG

10. More condos.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/21.JPG

11. Half of BC Place stadium, and yet more condos under construction.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/22.JPG

12. A seagull who was not impressed with all of Vancouver's condos.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/23.JPG

13. "WTF are you doing up here?"

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/24.JPG

14. Mount Baker (active volcano), Washington state, clearly visible in the background even though it's hundreds of miles away. Skyscrapers in the background are Metrotown, Burnaby. Mostly condos, believe it or not.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/27.JPG

15. Wide south-east shot.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/29.JPG

16. Looking east. Somewhat smoggy day.

http://www.canuckscentral.com/myvancouver/30.JPG

17. East again, with the Harbour Centre now in view.

Hope you like 'em... I'd appreciate any comments as this is my first post ever.

Here's just one small pic I came across at the Globe and Mail site from an article regarding our heat wave last week. I just thought it was kind of cool. As a bonus, it appears that you can just make out the Shangri-La.

sweet i shangri-la is gonna look amazingly iconic from that angle! the tinted wider diagonal side makes this building look more of an office building(as opposed to clear-glass slender condos). an added bonus is that it appears right in the middle of the cbd; and once the 22-floored office building by bentall is completed, shangri-la will appear even more central! ahhhh the power of angled illusions... :P

and then we have one wall sticking out of nowhere like a lost and confused oaf, albeit an extremely slender one. patina to the rescue!!

I took my first panorama today of SEFC. I stitched it together by hand in photoshop and it doesn't line up entirely. For those who are more knowledgeable at photoshop, is there a way to automate the process?

Anyway, here it is. This view is going to change so much in the coming years. Amazing to know it is a before picture.

Out of curiosity, how did you get it to look like you're hovering 10 ft away from the bridge? Long arms?.
There is a stairwell at that point of the Cambie Street Bridge and I took pictures from that. Long arms don't hurt either.

That looks very nice. I don't think there is any feature like that in photoshop, but I'm not an expert with it so I can't give u a confirm answer. But many cameras these days have a panorama feature built in. Does yours?

Great pano! Thanks for going to the effort of manually putting that together (I can't help you with photoshop either, sorry).

Out of curiosity, how did you get it to look like you're hovering 10 ft away from the bridge? Long arms?

Anyway, here it is. Is this view ever going to change in the coming years?

Based on the number of cranes south of False Creek alone I'd say that view should change quite a bit, not to mention there will be the addition of the Olympic Village and the whole surrounding SEFC neighbourhood.

By the way, you should post that in the construction thread in the Canada section as it definitely shows some construction (plus it's just a cool pano).

Thanks to Deez in the Canada forum for the tip of using Autostitch (http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html) to piece together the pano automatically.

i am obsessed with yachts

this is the Apoise - it was made in Germany - it was the 59th largest yacht on a 2006 list

The renowned yacht-maker, Lurssen has recently delivered this magnificent 67-meter Apoise yacht designed by Espen Oeino. The luxury yacht features a 12.8-meter beam, and boasts extraordinary volumes for a yacht of her length. It features six decks, four spacious cabins for guests with king size beds on the lower deck, while the main deck features enormous owners suite, which totals an area in excess of 130 square meters. The main deck features main salon with dining area and the yacht includes an impressive round glass elevator to transport you from lobby to other deck areas. The yacht also features a VIP cabin on the starboard side, full beam salon, dining area, large outdoor sunbathing and seating areas on the main and upper deck, large pool with integrated bar, huge bar/gym and a very large Jacuzzi fitted on the upper deck. The classic interiors of the yacht are designed by Francois Zuretti and the yacht will reach a top speed of 16 knots and has a range of 5,000 nm.

Hey SpongeG, I saw a most beautiful yacht in the Marinaside harbor (end of Davie St. in False Creek) about a month ago. I believe the name of the yacht was Kiss or Kisses. Did you get a chance to see it and do you know anything about it? I used to live in the Palm Beach area, and do not believe that I ever saw a prettier yacht on the water. Bigger yes, prettier, no.

the above yacht...

Northern Marine of Anacortes, Washington, made final
preparations last fall to launch its first 151-foot (46-meter)
tri-deck motor yacht. The yacht, called After Eight, was moved
in December from the company’s main building facility across
the small town for fairing, paint and interior fit-out in anticipation
of a February launch. The company reported that
the yacht could be seen from most of the town. She has five
staterooms including a main-deck master, elevator access to
all levels and crew quarters for 12. The builder says her twin
Caterpillar 3512B diesels will give her a top speed of 22 knots
and a 20-knot cruise.

This time from North Vancouver... I took this the other day -- it was such a beautiful afternoon, I snapped some pics from a small park on the waterfront, tried to stitch them together.

From this angle, you can see some of the Port of Vancouver and other shipping activity. The cruise shps I believe had already left for the day.

You can also see the skeleton of the convention centre expansion from here. The Shangri-la is poking out at a nice spot on the skyline.

The 2 pics are the same pano, one is just a zoom-in of the other:

We had an amazing sunset today and I snapped a few photos from my apartment looking west over Central Broadway, Pacific Spirit Park / University of British Columbia, and Downtown Vancouver.

And Italians usually know their stuff when it comes to beauty.

Guys, we seriously need to start giving the VANOC folks a list of all the good vantage points for foreign newscasts. ;) I don't think they will be able to find them all on their own.

^^^ The job market in Vancouver related to any trade is very hot right now. In fact, there are servere shortages in many different sectors. I don't know about Industrial design specifically but I found this website with no problems:

If you do decide to move here make sure your credentials are recognised by Canadian employers before you do.

Nice pics! There's been some gorgeous sunsets in the 3 months that I've lived here.
