Found this nice old pic of downtown on flickr. It didn't supply an accurate date of when it was taken (it said 2008) but it would appear that you can see One Wall Centre under construction so it must be from sometime around 2000/2001. There sure has been a lot of change since then.

The logo for Canada Trust is still atop one of the Bentall towers. That should serve as a point of reference.

Why are all of the flourescent lights green in this picture? Could it be a filter on the camera or did the old wasteful flourescent lights really have the hue?

Marriot Pinnacle not built, so we know this is before 2000.

Also, The Palisades is not in the picture, so we know this is around or before 1996. Since the old Pacific Palisades building was demo'd in 1994 and is not present in this picture, this looks like it is The Palisades that is under construction. Therefore, 1996.

Palisades would be off the pic to the right - you can see the HSBC building at Bute & Georgia - Palisades is west of that (same block as Residences on Georgia). I think Palisades pre-date One Wall (but Residences on Georgia may be after One Wall since it should be visible on that corner?).

However, Marriot Pinnacle isn't even built, so at least we know this is before 2000, and thus, before One Wall was built in 2001. The Palisades were built in 1996.

Hmm, I actually kind of prefer that skyline shot. Someone mentioned this before but having darker towers on the waterfront makes the skyline seem "bigger".

It's strange, I've lived on the North shore for over 20 years, travelled across Burrard inlet by Lions Gate or Seabus almost every day, and I can't even remember when those boat gas stations disappeared. I remember them being there, but honestly I don't even know if some are left?! They seem so politcally incorrect now.

Will have to check on my way home today. :/

A very low tide today. Habitat Island appears to have doubled in size. The daylighted stream will empty into the creek through this micro bay so there should always be some water present here in the future. For now the stream is damed and the water is being pumped into the creek on the other side of the island.

Some dark metal obelisks have been added to the south side of the mini-bay. I like the enclosure they offer. They also appear to have lighting of some sort at the top.

A closer view of the sentinals. They appear to be quite shiny and almost a dark, burnished maroon brass colour. I like them. They are my favourite element of the industrial motif of the site, public memory and all.

ugh, imo the glass on the lower 2/3 of wall center looks the best out of any glass on a building in van. how hard would it be to reclad the top 1/3 of the building if they allowed it one day? it would make it look 100 times better.

Woah, that is the craziest thing. Just last night I was watching an old south park from '98 and they referenced Vancouver in a CFL game against Ottawa, and that surprised me a bit. Then I was thinking to myself, I wonder if they will ever actually use Vancouver in one of their episodes.

Well, sorry to state the obvious but the episode was really about the writer's strike. They referred to the committee in charge of the strike as the WGA after all. Canada was just a way of presenting the writers' concerns as distant, unheard voices.

It's sad. I'm so tired of rich, retired baby boomers and their nauseating sense of entitlement. Just because they paid an arm and a leg for their condos they think they can call the shots. These people have way too much time on their hands. If they had lives they wouldn't have time to focus on something so trivial. "We have to look at that thing every day" they cry. Yeah? Well I have to look at the junkies in my back alley every day but that's city living for ya. Suck it up you whiners. This city's priorities are so fucked up.

^^ Thanks! Those intial building are rising pretty fast.
Btw, you know Photoshop has a photomerge option under File->automate (or similar)...it does an outstanding job of blending pictures even with different exposure levels or white balance.

And that was fairly late at night too, around 11pm, so many people had turned out the lights and gone to bed, or at least many of those who can afford million-dollar waterfront condos and townhouses.

What a BEAUTIFUL day! Unfortunately I spent the majority of it inside shopping... but I snapped this panorama from the Westin Bayshore. This is my first time staying at this hotel, and well, now I believe everything I have ever heard about Vancouver being a resort city. With the boats, and yachts, and seaplanes all parking nearby and picking people up... it's no wonder Vancouver is the best place to live :P
