Went by there today. They are 3 maybe 4 floors away from topping off. Construction is going full force here as the ground floor restaurants are fully formed and it looks like a subway entrance at the corner has taken shape with beautiful glass rotunda.

Also, the Metro Purple line in Century City is going full speed as well. CC is a massive construction zone during the shutdown

I was actually talking about the one catty corner to that - the JMB Realty one. If you click on the link in my post, it shows the beginning of construction. It lists the address as 1950 Avenue of the Stars.

Construction moving along on Colorado 77, a condo complex that's supposed to contain---you guessed it---77 residential condo units, with ground-floor retail, at the southwest corner of Colorado Boulevard and Los Robles Avenue in Pasadena. I took this photo on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

It's supposed to be completed by the 2nd half of 2021.

What's the deal with that CIM building? Are they ever going to transfer it to another owner and allow it to be occupied? Seems ridiculous to let housing sit empty like that. Could be used temporarily to house homeless at the very least.

It opened in 2014 but then Robert Silverstein and that La Mirada HOA sued and had their occupation revoked, triggering the residents to move out. Same people who sued and shut the Target for years

The Epic is great. I really like how the entire Sunset and Bronson-facing sides are entirely flush with the sidewalk, with the building's rear tapering so as not to tower over its neighbors to the north (although that site is begging for a mid-rise). Great job disguising the above-grade parking levels as well.

Century City seems to going taller than those other places as well, on average.
Every new building/proposal is 35 stories or higher. I think this will be the case for the foreseeable future in CC, especially when the Purple Line comes through.

Those other neighborhoods have 10-15 story midrises going up too. It's not better or worse, just a observation.

LA21st
Jun 16, 2020, 11:44 PM
I do foresee the surrounding neighborhoods boxing in the city though, it's already pretty tightly packed. Towers will most likely spread to the Miracle Mile, etc.

True, but there are some small buildings that can be redeveloped.

Yes, I expect the Miracle Mile area to add in a bunch of high-rises in the next decade. I can see same for the Beverly Center area too (not that far off a walk to Wilshire subway stations)
Hollywood, Koreatown should boom like crazy with 20-30 story buildings.

I don't know if now is the time for such optimism, hopefully things turn around quickly and your ambitions are not futile, DTLA has some major projects completely stalled out and it's hard for me to be so optimistic.. New projects are still going forward and in fact, now is the best time to build with less traffic and people around, so there's that at least.

Well, I don't think it's going to happen right away. But at some point, things will recover and I don't see any reason why the Purple Line developments won't boom regardless.
That line is 25-30 years late as it is. I think it's the biggest city for the city since, the 1984 Olympics, easily.

I agree with most your points, also LA has some very primitive building code that wastes floor space with huge cores for 'fire safety', LA buildings are pretty 'chunky' expensive and basically waste space .

Technically CC is already a pretty noticeable double skyline since the new Plaza towers completed, now with JMB towers going up it will be even more substantial. I agree that the FAA restriction does take away from CC having taller stand-out buildings and that goes without saying, however I heard rumblings not long ago that they are planning on changing the flight path or height in that area, so CC stands to gain quite literally if that's true.

Santa Monica airport closing soon so hopefully we will see taller towers in CC in the near future.

Niftybox

Santa Monica airport closing soon so hopefully we will see taller towers in CC in the near future.

Also makes you wonder what kind of proposals are waiting to reveal themselves once the FAA restriction is lifted. Also kind of surprised that some of the current projects didn't just wait a little longer to make their proposals, I guess because getting environmental review approval takes forever.

The island of Manhattan is roughly the length of distance between Downtown LA and Downtown Long Beach. No one is lumping Downtown Long Beach as an extension of LA.

??

That is incorrect. The entire length of Wilshire Boulevard (15.83 miles), from downtown LA to the ocean, is longer than the length of Manhattan (13.4 miles).

Downtown LA to downtown Long Beach is at least 23 miles, I would think, if not more.

It's funny because I used to work graveyard shift in Hollywood many years ago, and from South Pasadena to Hollywood was about 13 miles, or a 15-20 minute drive in the middle of the night. I can't imagine driving the whole length of Manhattan in 15-20 minutes any time of day.

CIM's Sycamore corridor in Hollywood is coming together as well. Starting off with the recently completed office building housing SiriusXM and the still under construction sister building down the street. They have also transformed the squat warehouses into cool looking creative office space.

When you take into account that none of our freeways are in straight lines from end to end, the distance is actually about 17-18 miles in a straight line. But Touché , I have a history of rounding down and rounding up lol.

Santa Monica airport closing soon so hopefully we will see taller towers in CC in the near future.

I hope so. I've always liked Century City even though it goes against everything I like about "Downtowns". Spent some time in Long Beach this week. The Gateway tower is moving fairly quickly its bigger than I expected it to be. But i feel Long Beach is missing something fun if that makes sense. Downtown felt kinda boring. Wish it had more clubs and bars and I wish there was some kind of rail service to the Long Beach Airport. Lakewood blvd is unnecessarily wide, could easily support LRT down the center.

I posted my 3d development map for DTLA last week, so I thought it about time to post my one for the metro. I am definitely missing a lot of smaller projects and trying to fill them in, but overall it is relatively accurate. White buildings are under construction, blue is for approved, red for proposed, and yellow for ones without renders/ have gone quiet and might not happen. As always let me know if I am missing anything or there is any inaccurate information.

1111 Sunset:

This is an absolutely insane proposal, and I really hope it goes through.

https://i.imgur.com/c0dBV8q.png

The Lake on Wilshire:

As far as I know, this was approved, but I haven't heard any news for like 2 years. Does anyone know if it is still happening?

https://i.imgur.com/PAoPOMk.png

Koreatown:

A lot of good infill and mid-sized projects happening here, but the area is really in need of a solid pinnacle imo.

https://i.imgur.com/Bx1wFLy.png

https://i.imgur.com/grIkAYC.png

https://i.imgur.com/RgLx60L.png

5411 Wilshire:

This one is a really beautiful, but also a quite imposing project. I hope that if it goes through it leads to a solid mini skyline.

https://i.imgur.com/J1uNTYr.png

Century City:

https://i.imgur.com/AlsBA8u.png

West Hollywood:

https://i.imgur.com/7rmSZkK.png

Cross Roads of the World:

I cannot believe this was approved, and I am really really hoping it actually goes through. It's absolutely massive and I love it.

https://i.imgur.com/ZBOsXec.png

Hollywood:

The amount of development here is staggering, and its quickly becoming one of the densest parts of the city.

https://i.imgur.com/8L1IG6V.png

Hollywood Center:

I am even more surprised this was approved, and honestly, Hollywood looks pretty bad WITHOUT it. it works as an amazing pinnacle for the city and plays such respect to the Capitol Records building. I remember when my mom first went to LA she was for some reason convinced that the Capitol Records building was some massive 50 story tower and was completely disappointed to find out how small it really was. I'd like to think this project is for her lol.

https://i.imgur.com/UV0a9Jx.png

More buildings blocking the AHF building which is great. Supposedly The Palladium and 6400 Sunset were approved today, so fingers crossed they come to fruition.

More Hollywood:

And lastly a wide shot of the metro.

Ahh yes, THIS is the project I mentioned in my deleted post (not sure why that one was deleted as it was an obvious attempt to redirect the conversation earlier...) that I heard some news about on the radio last week. It’s supposed to replace the Staples store there and I coulda swore it was said to have been approved. I’m trying to look up any new information about it but can’t find anything.

I literally just posted my Hollywood model a few days ago and it's already outdated. The Onni Office building (https://urbanize.la/post/onni-group-plans-14-story-office-building-hollywood-and-cahuenga) will make a decent impact on the skyline and fill in part of the largest dent in the skyline. The building is actually pretty darn tall and would be one of the tallest buildings in the area, but its bulk really throws off the scale. Overall though, it's a welcome addition.

https://i.imgur.com/Vq4hE7T.png

https://i.imgur.com/rNErflz.png

I also made a quick, and likely very inaccurate mock up of the Angel Stadium Project (https://urbanize.la/post/angel-stadium-plan-calls-150-acres-housing-offices-and-retail) which I'm pretty sure is my first model in OC. Definitely a big project, but I would honestly I would trade the large buildings for more variety in the heights and massing of all the midrises. A bunch of 6-16 story buildings would be much more urban than dozens of 7 stories and a few skyscrapers. That said, even if it happens it will be decades before it's finished so hopefully, they'll be some major tweaking.

Being an Angel fan myself this is pretty exciting news, nothing has happened for so long and so many botched proposals, it's still hard to believe this could actually happen. This could have a huge impact on Anaheim with the start of a new downtown 'core', that's a lot of density and towers going up at once. Also preparing for the future high speed rail is really clever and that's one way smaller cities get a lot bigger, and close-by rail networks help stadiums alleviate traffic problems. Dodger stadium could really use a similar face lift but they had their shot and went small this time. I'm actually quite surprised the Angels got around to something like this before the Dodgers, considering the Dodgers are a considerably higher market cap team.

Haha that project is kind of a monstrosity, it seems way too big for the surrounding area imo. I'd prefer if it were two smaller narrower towers like a 25 and a 35 story or something to better fit the area, just look at the scale of the tower compared to the one to its direct left (in picture 4), it absolutely dwarfs it in height and mass. I think a building needs to compliment its surrounding buildings, not overshadow them making them irrelevant.

There's a link on the Mirabelle website to write in and support the tower. If you'd like to see it built, I highly recommend filling it out. I did, and they will use these submissions to help with future planning commission meetings to help get the tower approved, as it will have a lot of opposition from surrounding neighbors. But as housing near planned mass transit, this is much needed, and includes 38 affordable units where 0 exist right now.

There's few small buildings on Century Park East that can be redeveloped and even some smaller offices on SM blvd near the mall.
I think Century City can add more towers than you think. Also, remember there's a plan for to expand/add on to the Fox Studios lot. Last I remember,

Also, the 3 lots on the northwest corner of Wilshire/Vermont have been cordoned off. The Shell gas station torn down, the Denny's closed and boarded up, the car lot/dealer closed and boarded up. That would be a big but welcome change for Bev. Hills to allow 30+ story buildings. There might be some opposition since few wealthy homeowners want a 30+ story tower next door. Right off Wilshire on the side streets you have single family detached houses. Expect some NIMBY opposition (hopefully not).

Now that the towers behind the Century Plaza are almost topped out, do they appear to be a bit taller than the triangular theme towers across the street? One of the descriptions had them going to 600', but some renderings showed them to be a bit shorter than the theme towers.

Me today: It could be a lot bigger

Both of these projects look incredible imo. The Mirabel was still is one of the prettiest towers proposed in the city, and the new Onni project (https://urbanize.la/post/high-rise-revamp-proposed-wilshire-courtyard-office-complex) is absolutely gigantic. It's amusing because I was literally just thinking yesterday about how much of a waste of space the Wilshire Courtyard is. The new tower's design isn't as elegant as the Mirabel's, but I do think the gradual tilt and slope of the side and roof which can't be replicated in Google Earth, will really reduce their bulk.

The one would be the tallest building outside of DTLA, no?

In other news, I am thrilled with the Norman Foster proposal. I think it's a massive step up from the previous one (pun intended). I do want to know for sure if it is replacing or including the Beverly Hilton expansion, because their podiums, and overall design, line up, so I included a render both with and without it.

Also, the heights and exact position of the towers are estimated based on analyzing the photos. It's close, but I can't ensure complete accuracy.

Lastly, I added One Broadway in Santa Ana, which might be one of the ugliest and most ridiculous proposals I've seen. I kind of hope it gets built, in part because it could pave the way to more, and better development in the area, and because it is just so funny to me.

As always feedback is appreciated and let me know if there are any particular projects you want to see.

Nice work! that second to last image, is a double skyline I didn't know was so substantial. Also lots of fun new projects to keep up with soon.

There's another high rise project planned in santa ana on the site of the oc register office building by the same developer of one broadway. same height for both towers too.

also don't know if you'd like to add long beach towers, there's like 10 high rise proposals there now.

finally, not sure if you've included the high rise west of the 405 just off wilshire near VA.

Wow, great work!

How many 30-45 story proposals and u/c are there now in the neighborhoods?

La Ceinga Station (1)
Maribel (1)
Wilshire Courtyard (2)
Brentwood/Wlshire (1)
Hollywood Crossroads (3 towers)
Hollywood Capitol Records development (2)
Century Plaza (2)
Century City unnamed condos (1-2)
Beverly Hilton development (2)
Koreatown must have at least 3 at the moment
Warner Center has 3-4 in the pipeline

What's crazy is, there's going to be alot more as the Purple Line nears completion.
I think there's going to be 40-50 story buildings all over that corridor. They have to go more vertical due to lack of land.

There's few small buildings on Century Park East that can be redeveloped and even some smaller offices on SM blvd near the mall.
I think Century City can add more towers than you think. Also, remember there's a plan for to expand/add on to the Fox Studios lot. Last I remember,
it featured good amount of new high-rises.

Sorry to be bringing this up now, but I don't remember seeing any rendering for that Fox proposal, what were the buildings proposed? How tall are they?

Man those Wilshire Courtyard Office towers are quite robust, necessary to stand out from miles away though. And Century City is almost like a second downtown, but more like a nexus in a way. Crazy that we are seeing this much development during pandemic.

Just so we have the photos for reference:

I hate to say it, but I think this might be a bad proposal. A project this massive should be mixed use, especially when its only a block away from a subway station. Compounding that, this project would include 4,600 parking spaces. Once again, this is on top of a subway line! Luckily, I suspect the project will evolve as it travels through the approval channels. I'd be shocked if this development, in its current form, is what ultimately gets built.

Just a plan for now, but I think you're gonna see a few towers around 475 feet.

I like the fact that its going to be all office. We need alot of jobs around the stations too, and so many buildings have gone residential on Wilshire already.

I dont think Wilshire is going to be hurting for more residential towers in the area.
