^^^ And I wish the City/County/Region would see this and the possibilities. There is no reason why rail line cant be spread all over the county. The bogus reports/studies that metro gives for their reasoning behind why some lines wont be "feasible" or why they "wont work" just makes me want to scream. But somehow the WSAB makes the cut and the endless extension of the foothill line makes sense while denser corridors "Wont make sense". Annoying.

WSAB goes through some of the densest and most transit-dependent neighborhoods in the entire region. It's projected to have the highest ridership of any light rail line in Southern California. From both a ridership and equity standpoint, this is one of the most reasonable projects in the entire Measure M slate of projects.

The only dense-ish part is Bellflower and the specific area where the density is will only be getting one station. Its current terminus will be Little India at Pioneer/South street which is fine. But. 1 its a low density area with little to no heavy jobs center, the one job center it does pass is the Cerritos mall and surrounding entertainment district which, surprise surprise, wont be getting a stop a half miles away.

The WSAB will not be surpassing the Blue line in ridership, it wont surpass the Expo, it wont surpass the purple or red. Hell i'll be surprised if it surpasses the Crenshaw line. The only way for it to even be moderately used is if/when it continues on into Orange County which, by looking at google maps, will still be a stretch.

That's largely because all the recent FAANG expansions are all driven by their respective media strategies. Instead of buying an existing studio, FAANG are going to now spending stupid money trying to reinvent the proverbial wheel of making TV shows and movie.

So LA expansion is not a coincidence... this is where the talent lives whom FAANG wants to hire. And I'm not talking about actors, writers, or directors. I'm talking about production people, accountants and lawyers who know how to do entertainment deals, and people who work in distribution. They all live in LA and no one wants to move to Seattle or San Jose.

Case in point: Netflix's Bay Area-based CFO retired last year, and they hired an LA-based replacement.

Caligrad, the corridor this line goes through is deceptively dense. Yes, on google satellite it looks like a bunch of single-family homes, but in reality, a good portion of those are small apartment buildings/2,3, and 4 plexes (often were originally built as SFH). Plus, the area is lower income and features a much higher ratio of people/bedroom, so the built form does not necessarily reflect the actual population density.

Not only that, the gaping hole in the front motor court has been completely filled. This area will become an pedestrian plaza with public access easement.

Yes very exciting to see them excavating the basement right now... this site is finally under construction after sitting vacant for almost 20 years. Is this project 100% residential? I was hoping it will have street level retail component. I hope they integrate the subway station access properly at this site.

Hollywood / Wilcox 15-story development inching along. I am most excited about some of these Hollywood infill projects that really have the opportunity to revive the area. This would rise only feet from the u/c Tommie hotel, Thompson hotel, and the Dream hotel-adjacent project.

The Wilcox / Selma / Hollywood area is hot right now. Only wish this one weren’t so far out from groundbreaking.

I had occasion to be down in Hawthorne on Wednesday. While on a break, I got over to the parking garage at the HP Casino, which overlooks the new Rams Stadium construction site. Nice to see that stadium design in this country has finally caught up to the rest of the world.

On the way back north, I drove through Century City to get an idea of how far things have progressed on the new twin towers. They are definitely above ground and going to add an interesting dynamic to the skyline. The vacant lot across Ave of the Stars is finally fenced off too, hopefully another set of gems by Johnson Fain. Century City will likely never be really urban in a traditional sense, but it’s finally filling in and will get better. We don’t seem to get many pics of Century City here, so I’m sharing what I got the other day…

Anyone living in Ventura or Santa Barbara knows that there is no reason to ever take the 405 during drive time if you can avoid it. The PCH is longer but about the same amount of time. And it’s much more scenic, especially at sunset. The Channel Islands are such a gem.

Since people still need to board 2 trains to reach the people mover from Union Station, Metro should create express trains on the Expo and Crenshaw line that skip all the stops except for Union station, the transfer station between expo and Crenshaw, and the people mover connecting station. Stuff like this is - or even a direct train line between LAX and Union Station via the Harbor Subdivision - is frequently suggested, but existing travel patterns don't suggest there's great demand for it.

Total ridership for all the LAX FlyAway buses last year was 1.3 million (down from 1.5 million 10 years earlier) - amounting to around 3,500 total people per day. The LAX-Union Station route probably accounts for more than half that total, but that's not a number the screams for equivalent rail service.

No one's happier than me to see this one finally get off the ground. Another gap will be closed as we drive along Wilshire toward a Downtown that is beginning to live up to it's status as a major world city. So good to see that whole stretch taking shape.

Speaking of Korea Town, who works out at the 24 hour fitness on Serrano and Wilshire? Love it, since the major expansion. It was past due, with all the residential development going up in the neighborhood.

Thanks! Pretty good design wise, considering what else is getting built. There used to be an alley between these two lots, would have been nice to keep that for public use/retail, but somehow I don't think that's happening.

At $650M being spent, even with a pretty big downsizing, I’m wondering if this new project adds any value to remaking the museum anymore. (I supported the original and remade Zumthor proposal). The cuts from this third proposal are too significant, IMO.

I still can’t wrap my head around what $650 is getting spent on for a two story building. The new Apple building costs $427M with 2M sq feet. LACMA will be 307,000 sq ft. Like CAHSR, there’s got to be a lot of pork that no one can pinpoint.

There's subtlety in the new LACMA too. Zumthor won the Pritzker years ago. It is the equivalent of the Nobel Prize in Architecture. Have some faith that Zumthor knows what he is doing?

There are many great building that do not scream that they are great. Take, for example, the British Art Center at Yale. From the outside, it looks like a concrete box that has metal panels where the windows would be. Or, look at the Salk Institute, another Kahn design whose brilliance is due in part to the most simple geometric gesture of revealing and hiding the solidity of a plane.

Guess who else does that? That is what Zumthor is doing on the first floor of LACMA, a gesture Zumthor makes even more mysterious by enveloping some of the planes in glass. As I said, there's a lot of subtlety in the LACMA design. It is worth a second look.

A mixed-use art museum? Not so much LA's future as New York's past and present. Long before Nouvel's museum tower, Pelli created his own on the other side of MOMA.

MOMA didn't purposely try what you are suggesting. It is just the sort of strange thing MOMA does. Still, it has been an aberration and one that has continued to detract from the greatness of its collection.

The problems with this project have less to do with the merits of the design and more to do with the use of very precious real estate. LACMA’s collection isn’t great. A lot of things probably aren’t museum quality and can be taken off the walls, but the collection is growing rapidly along with LA’s maturing philathropy scene (Raising $550M with capital campaigns going on in other areas of the city’s cultural life is no small for even the richest cities). It’s a single-level building at close to $1,700/sq feet that with every new redesign whittles away more and more space due to cost limitations. In the end, the art has to be the number one focus over the design of the building. In this situation it seems the art needs to accomodate the building and go back into storage.

MOCA is only 32 years old and it’s in desperate need for expansion. LACMA has worse prospects. It seems Govan thinks LACMA has an endless amount of real estate. They leased the Academy building so it can’t expand over there. Heizer’s boulder takes up a lot of space. (Yes, the empty space is part of the space). The tar pits are probably seeping underground who knows where. And the organic form of Zumthor means that when we need to expand in 30 years (and that conversation will come up again if it isn’t happening right now), the incoming director and chosen architect have far less to work with, basically relegated to the fringes between buildings. And it’ll be LACMA’s fourth building because I don’t see how they could add an expansion to Zumthor’s organic form without ruining his design. The original intent was to consolidate the buildings and bring the campus together.

And having satellite locations to house the rest of the collection and split up the museum across the city shouldn’t even be considered even if it’s rumoured by LA Times.

I had Truly Nolen over yesterday to do an inspection of my house for termites and, no termites, and I asked him about these 5 story wooden apartment buildings they're building all over the country, and he claimed that all the wood used in these buildings is pre-treated for termites. Yes that's the highrise. I spoke to a foreman on site and he said delivery is scheduled for fall 2020.

New high rise for Rossmore, my favorite street in Los Angeles, and a model for a potential high rise typology to be repeated across the whole of the city.

What’s up with that community development called Centennial @ Tejon Ranch?? I thought California learned and was down with the spread of suburban sprawl?? Do people really support that? I honestly think that land should be preserved.. so it’s beautiful the way it looks... and besides we dont need any more sprawl. I understand we need housing, but suburbs isn’t the answer imo.
